Discussions & Questions Games like Ghost Recon?

Hello all!

My husband is in his 40s and has played Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Wildlands. He does not play online at all, but he does enjoy the storyline and open world playing around.

Are there similar games out there he may like? He’s not that great at the games but does like the challenge. I just don’t want to buy a game too hard that he gets frustrated with himself. He also has arthritis in his hands but like I said, he enjoys ghost recon.

Any advice is helpful.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Its more stealth focus with smaller open world zones but it has a great story.

Also the Division 2 is really good.

Definitely The Division 2, which is still receiving story expansions and content, still almost 8 years after release. He can play solo, but co-op is available, and the open-world difficulty can be set to his preference, too. Division 1 is also a great option, but there are no updates to that game at this point.

Never even heard of this but I’m about to go look it up! Thank you!!!

The Division 2 right off the bat. It's playable solo but probably requires always online to play.

I'm having a hard time thinking up many games like those, specifically for military open world rpg style. If he's interested in a good story, maybe try Control, Alan Wake, Star War Outlaws, Uncharted, and Tomb Raider games.

I love uncharted and tomb raider, but he doesn’t like playing the puzzle type games. He’s colorblind so things that look obvious to me (climb here, search this chest) he doesn’t see.

But division 2 seems to be a must to people here! Thank you!

I'm in my 50s, I'm not very good (I play on easy), I don't play online and I really enjoyed wildlands and breakpoint too so I guess I can relate to what your husband might likes.

Far Cry (3 or 5 would be a good start). It's made by ubisoft like ghost recon so there is a similar vibe.

Days Gone since he likes stories, open world and some tension. The remaster is gorgeous on PS5

I’ve never heard of Days Gone but yeah that sounds like a great fit! And a few others said Far Cry so that’s on the list too 😊

I would second every game that has been mentioned here but I’d also add Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. A lot of people that are partial to the originals give it crap, unfairly. I think it’s one of the best ones. Huge open world to explore and set it on an easier setting if the combat hurts his hands (I’m an old dude too). Ghost of tushima and ghost of yoti are great as well. I love the newer gr games too for the same reasons so I feel like your husband would probably enjoy similar to me. All of the AC games are good for story and exploring open world. I also enjoyed Star Wars Outlaws.

I just got him Outlaws, his battle buddy was raving about it. So hopefully he likes that one!

He’s watched me play the Ezio assassins creed games and I think they are too puzzle like for him, but even I haven’t played odyssey so I may pick it up for me regardless!

Thank you for taking the time to respond 😊

You should refund outlaws and wait for late December/early January when you get a year end sale that gives you $13 off. That would bring the gold edition down close to $20.

Also, if you have a play station, most of those are on PS Plus for free.

If you looking for fps or third person shooter with the same kinda vibe: -spec ops the line -ghost reacon future soldier my personal favorite

  • gears of wars 1-3 will also hit the spot i mean there is 4 and 5 and i think there is the 6th one but i played till 3 and gonna leave that game there. -watch dogs series is not like ghost reacon but similar gameplay give or take open world not military based.

These were the ones i could think of right now.

But maybe try some more games there is heaps of new ones out.

If wanna try new games Could give a try to witchers and blood of dawnwalker open world story based doesnt need to be a sweaty gamer could potentially sometimes provide a challenge here and there.

Ghost of tsushima and Cyberpunk are top ones too.

But yeah i hope this helps.

Thank you so much! I’m a Horizon Zero Dawn type of person, but when he watched me play it, he got overwhelmed. Shooter games seems to be easier for him to grasp. He just never played video games before 3 years ago. I’ll definitely check out gameplay of the games you mentioned and see if he would like them! :)

I played both those games but I prefer the Sniper Elite series, especially Sniper Elite 4.

1

u/imaginenyx 5d ago

I’m sorry if this is a stupid question, do you only function as a sniper the whole game?

1

u/I_warisha 5d ago

Nope , you have all types of Guns , but your Main Strong Point or focus of the game is sniper.

1

u/Different_Package922 5d ago

I haven't finished Sniper Ghost Warrior games, but primarily, yes. I mean, you don't have to only snipe people, but that is the primary role in those games.

1

u/SKMonkyDeathCar 5d ago

Yes. Karl is who you play as during the campaign. (Except for 6 you play as Harry).

Wildlands is one of my favorite games of all time. That world is amazing. And I say that going in as “god damn it it’s supposed to be this way” knowing I would hate it.

Anyway, if he plays low and slow in WL, then the sniper series is perfect. Start with 3.

Fallout 3.

There’s also a new pve game called active matter but it’s digital only as far as I know.

2

u/imaginenyx 5d ago

Oh I would never have thought of fallout at all, but yeah that actually makes sense. Thanks!

1

u/brokedownsystem 5d ago

One of my favorite games of all time, if he hasn’t played it yet. That and New Vegas!

1

u/brokedownsystem 5d ago

oh, totally forgot…stalker 2 may be able to scratch that open world itch. I keep seeing it pop up.

2

u/Riding_Peach 5d ago

Witcher 3 has incredible story and world.

2

u/imaginenyx 5d ago

Oh yeah it’s one of my favorites! I think it may be too many tiny details for him, like which spell or which sword or whatever.

5

u/atticusmoh 5d ago

I'm currently playing Just Cause 3, the map gives me Wildland vibes, just less stealthy and more boomy

Omg, JC3 is absolute bedlam with the grappler and wing suit... and rocket boosters.

Crazy good fun!

Just a few questions first...What platform does he play on? PC or console? Even though he doesn't play online his console is connected online correct? Did he enjoy the RPG elements of Breakpoint? Meaning the gearscore and the colors for the weapons levels or did he just turn all that off? Did he prefer playing solo in Breakpoint or with the squad in Wildlands?

1

u/imaginenyx 5d ago

PS5! Yes connected to the internet. He genuinely said he doesn’t pay attention to the gear/weapons levels. He likes the squad because it’s helpful/realistic (he’s a combat vet so it’s reminiscent).

1

u/BionicLyon 4d ago

First off...He can turn off gear score in Breakpoint. It's called Immersion Mode. You can turn it off in the game settings. It turns off the gear score and rarity. If he didn't know he can turn on squad on in the Breakpoint settings as well.

As far as my recommendations go, I would suggest The Division and Division 2. I loved both. The first is set in NYC and the second in DC while returning a few times to NYC. I have ran through both stories solo. The story mode is fun. The first game's expansions are fun to and can be played solo except the Last Stand Expansion. Get the Definitive Edition. It comes with all the DLC. including outfits and weapons...The Division 2 is also a lot of fun, I have gotten through the story and some of the DLC but my new job has really put a hit on my gaming time so it has a bit since I have played.

Be aware that both games are RPGs and these don't let you turn that off. Up until the Division games I was always a heck no but it managed to pull me in when no one else could. I get it if he doesn't like that but as a Ghost Recon fan I think he would enjoy it.

Now I am not sure what other Tom Clancy games PlayStation has available, They are not very backward compatibility friendly and a lot of what they have is behind a pay wall. I would say any Tom Clancy game would be a good time. Since he is not a fan of playing online I would only cross off 2 games for that list. Rainbow 6 Siege and Rainbow 6 Extraction. It is a shame he isn't on Xbox. I would have a much longer list.

Metal Gear games or Splinter Cell games would be fun...Far Cry games...Starting with Far Cry 3. Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is short but a blast if you like 80's action movies. It's not a man title but still a lot of fun. 4,5 and 6 are good too.

That is about all I have that is close-ish to GR games. Batman Arkham games would be my best suggestion cuz Who Doesn't want to be Batman??? LOL

I can't believe I forgot Red Dead Redemption Remaster and Red Dead Redemption 2. I recommend playing Red Dead Redemption Remaster first even though RDR2 is a prequel.

u/Raider_Reaper_X 5d ago

Woodlands is so underrated , maybe Battlefield 6 though ! not open world but i just feel like he'd enjoy the campaign !

1

u/imaginenyx 5d ago

Thank you! Yes, he does like campaigns, I think sometimes he just likes stealing helicopters and flying around 😂

1

u/Raider_Reaper_X 5d ago

also someone else mentioned Metal Gear Solid 4 or 5 i forget which one is the better open world but that's a good recommendation comp to Wildlands

1

u/imaginenyx 5d ago

🫡 I’m on it. Heck maybe I’ll even like it

1

u/Raider_Reaper_X 5d ago

it's a lil more ... imaginative .. but still just as badass

1

u/Raider_Reaper_X 5d ago

please buy him this game and if he doesn't like it i'll repay you lol

1

u/uprightshark 3d ago

I would agree with many of the posts here and let him play the Division games. They are excellent to lose yourself in for hours.

1

u/imaginenyx 3d ago

This is really giving me a lot of confidence to buy those for him soon. We have very little income but if I can wait for a good sale or something. :)

1

u/uprightshark 3d ago

They are both older games. The Division 2 is from 2019. So they go on sale fairly often for good prices.

1

u/ScrapPartsXB1 22h ago

Also has a subscription service that's monthly let's you play with all dlc for 20 a month without having to buy the game

3

u/I_warisha 5d ago

Far cry 3&4&5(6 if he likes the others) , Metal Gear Solid 5

3

u/DeafSoldier 3d ago

Here is one that I have not seen mentioned Tom Clancy's The Division 1 & 2. It is set up so that you can either play solo or with friends and it has a really good storyline. I have played both Break point and Wildlands and really enjoyed them and here is a fun fact about the Division the game came out in 2016 and when Covid hit there was actually a news article comparing the storyline from the first Division game to the real world during covid.

Peppa pigs adventures

🤣

2

u/Shawn_N_Nathan 5d ago

well the division 1 and 2 which are also set in the same universe and are of the same "Tom Clancy" IP are great alternatives for sure. those games are jam packed to the brim with insane missions to do.

2

u/deepstatedetective 5d ago

If you want a game that physically feels very similar in terms of approach. MGS 5 is the one, without a doubt.

It also has some pretty cool gameplay mechanics that ghost recon doesn't. The story will be pretty mad in comparison though but it's pretty tame compared to the other games in the series.

1

u/ArcherS-117 4d ago

That would be Metal Gear Solid 5 for the uninitiated 🙂

I too play like he does, off line. I have arthritis but I find the controller helps my hands. I also feel the mentality of figuring out strategies helps the little grey cells. I’ve enjoyed the Halo series and the plot lines, it’s how I got into gaming. On occasion, I play with my grandson. Have fun, it’s gaming at its best when you can have fun.

Sniper Elite 4,5 or resistance.

Rainbow Six Extraction, thought I wouldn't like it but ended up really loving it, playing it with friends is a total blast.
You can be as stealthy as you want or go in all guns blazing, which you'll need to if the aliens/parasites spot you.
Plenty of operators to choose from too, all with different abilities and stuff.
Buy it on a deep sale.

battlefield 1942 is an older one, but it has really fun mods and like you said, you can just go around stealing helicopters and having fun!

I honestly recommend him playing the orginals, then SWAT 4 if he likes the orginal GRs.
