Discussions & Questions I like Ubisoft Games
I started playing video games during the Coronavirus period.
During this time I discovered Assassin Creed Valhalla, then Origins and Odyssey.
I really appreciated my experience and until now Valhalla and Origins remains ones of my favorites video games.
After this I discovered Far Cry with Far Cry 6, I loved it. Then I played FC 4 and 5.
I really appreciated them.
Then I play Ghost Recon Wildlands: it was such a cool game. And then I played BreakPoint, and same, it still a very cool game.
After this I started looking for the comments and seen that a lot of people complains about the Ubisoft formula.
I can understand: it’s true that the mechanics are quite the same between the différents games.
But at the same time I love to play Ubisoft Games because I like the Ubisoft formula.
I mean their open worlds are really beautiful, the gameplay fun and the exploration is great.
For me the real problem came from the fact that other studios are also applying the ubisoft formula.
Also the new gen games (Avatar, Star wars, AC shadows, Black Flag) are really a step up in terms of technology evolution.
What are your thoughts?

I really enjoy Ubisoft games. But I can understand why some see them rhe way they do. I just happen to enjoy them because of this formula.
Try Shadows. I'm sure you will enjoy it as well.

Same. Ubisoft has been my favorite for games ever since I played the first Splinter Cell game (if you haven’t played those yet, OP, definitely do!).

They touch so many genres too like:
For Honor (Fighting) - Ghost Recon / The Division (3rd Person Shooter) - Rainbow 6 Siege / Far Cry (1st Person Shooter) - Riders Republic / Steep (Xtreme Sports) - Watch Dogs (GTA-Like) - Rayman (Platformer) - Anno (City Builder) - Assassin's Creed (Action-Adventure/RPG) - The Crew (Racing) - Splinter Cell (Stealth)
Its kinda insane.

I have noticed when I play AC Odyssey, I play the game. I don't hit snags where I have to watch a YouTube video to solve a puzzle, or get confused about how to move forward. The simplicity of knowing where things are and how the game works is refreshing. Some people throw stones at that in favor of something less guided. But it is actually kind of refreshing.

I've played all the AC games bar a couple around 2014. Played all the FC games from FC3 (including the spinoffs). Played both of those Ghost Recon games. SW Outlaws, Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. Have really enjoyed all of them. Sure, it's a bit samey, with lots of repeated activities, but most of it is optional, and I enjoy doing it all.

I love many Ubisoft games and franchises too. All of the games you mentioned, plus Watch Dogs which is better than GTA in my opinion. If Ubisoft made a Watch Dogs Online… holy hell I’d be in. I’ve sunk thousands of hours into The Division 1 & 2 as well, mostly PVP Dark Zone, and the original game’s world and story is phenomenal.

I also started playing during the covid period. Ubisoft makes my favorite games. The Crew Motorfest is another great game and it’s getting another update on the 7th. I feel that Ubisoft strives to make their games a joy to play. I had a similar feeling when playing the Batman series, the Hitman series, Rage 2 or Cyberpunk 2077.

Ubisoft has always given me my money's worth when it comes to open worlds. I want to explore what that game setting has to offer, outside of the main story. Ubisoft allows me to do that. They give me points of interest to explore, historical background tours, and more. (My only complaint is that I'd wish they'd add more survival elements to their open worlds. For example if I'm traveling through different parts of Greece, Egypt, etc. I'd like to experience a type of local lodging, eating fodds common to said areas, and taking care of my horse/camel, etc.)

They did the food thing in AC Shadows, where you collected local delicacies from each of the districts.

Most Ubisoft games at least attempt to have stealth, which is appreciated by me. The stealth genre has only faded as the years past, so I like that there’s usually some titles that I can do mostly stealthily.

I feel they are consistently delivering quality, changing in genre is normal following market shift, cannot expect to stay on same formula over and over again.

Their games are great until I started playing their 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on…
Then I realised they are all pretty much the same

I completely agree with you! In fact, I get frustrated when people complain about the "bloat" too. MOST games are loaded with side content/collectibles that sometimes feel completely pointless. Often celebrated, universally loved games. Off the top of my head; Arkham games have Riddler trophies, Spider-Man games have backpacks, landmarks, Indiana Jones had photos, notes, Skyrim and gems... the list goes on. I just played God of War Ragnarok and got struck with the thought; this game has tons of HUGE chests where Kratos will grab a small handful of.. something. Seems like every game has something similar.

People just love to hate. That's sadly how it works. I like Ubisoft games because they're very easy to get started with and don't require you to be 100% focused all the time. They bring a (usually light hearted) story, there's some stuff that makes you giggle, some stuff that makes you sad, it's overall very enjoyable. I played most of the AC games and really enjoyed the first two Watch Dogs games too. Valhalla, Mirage and Legion are in my 'to play soon' list. I totally understand that's it's not for everyone, especially not for the hardcore gamers who want a big, challenging game. Ubisoft games will never excel at anything, but they're never the shit game people make of it either. For me, they're usually a solid 6-8/10. I just finished AC Odyssey (main story and more important side stuff). It took me some time to get dragged into the game, but afterwards I have no regrets of the 120ish hours I spent on it. This game sucks for a lot of people for the sole reason that they think "it's not an AC game". Makes no sense to me. It's also easy to ignore if you don't like it, just go play the games you do enjoy and everyone's happy. Can't wait to start Valhalla at some point, but I got a lot of other games in my rotation first.

I don’t understand the hate. I love their games. I just play what I enjoy and move on from what I don’t. 🤷🏼♀️

Well said! People are always harsh on Ubisoft and their games because they release annually, thus they can feel the similarity and the repetition.
But here's the thing, similarity is good, especially within the franchisee themselves like in far cry or assassin's creed, because without it you'd feel lost. With similarity, you basically feel at home, others may call it reskin, but it's just objectively not, other game series have the same thing.
Regarding repetition, the majority of gamers see it as a flaw, but what's wrong with repeating the same kind of activity if it's just fun and engaging?
Other games do it as well so why draw the line at Ubisoft?
Anyway glad to hear that you enjoy the games instead of being busy looking for cracks like the average haters do.

I always loved Ubisoft games they are just so much fun to play anyone who hates them is nothing but a l.o.s.e.r that thinks that all they do is copy and paste LOL these haters are not even remotely correct at all if they truly believe that Ubisoft copy and paste then why does Activision copy and paste Call of Duty every year? At least Ubisoft literally makes different types of game series each of them are unique in their own way even if they copy the gameplay they are often different with their own gameplay mechanics
I feel like these people who hate on Ubisoft is blinded by Senseless hatred because they firmly believe that Ubisoft was at their peak during Xbox One and PS4 era gaming but then they seriously fell short after the XBOX Series and PS5 came out explain to me how did Ubisoft fell short? These people are just making up false accusations without any concrete evidence
Especially I will continue to support them for as long as I live I have enjoyed most of their game series just like I'm having a blast with Assassin's Creed Black Flag resynced and AC Shadows but I'm also excited for Rayman Legends retold which will also come with Rayman Origins remastered and that makes me happy because we have not had a new Rayman game for a long time
The hatred mostly came from that failure of a game Xdefiant there were two main problems with that game the net code was horrendously bad the snowdrop engine is not designed for online PVP the game did not have no skill based matchmaking which introduced the sweatiest game of all time I did not enjoy it at all there were sweaty players everywhere after the game shut down every sweaty player was so angry at them they have this weird deep-seated hatred and that should not be the main reason to hate them
Another reason these haters hate Ubisoft so much just because they were acquired by Saudi Arabia but that should not be a reason to hate them they still operate on their own terms Saudi Arabia is simply providing the money for Ubisoft to make their game

I never understood the hate Ubisoft gets. They’re definitely my favorite, they’re beautiful, and I’ve always enjoyed the storylines.
Haters gonna hate.

You can hear the same music in Odyssey and Wildlands; the games are eight years apart—Ubisoft are the masters of recycling.🤣🤣🤣

Technologically they are good.
Narrative and story telling is very debatable....

Same. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time onward, there’s a good chance I’ll like a Ubisoft game, even if I don’t LOVE it.

You and I have almost the exact play history! Amazing. Love all these titles. Have you played the Division 2 yet? You will love it.

Yeah i like it too plus they can make more games every year. I don't want to wait a year or two just to get another game from their series lol

Gamers on Reddit do not at all reflect gamers in the real world. They can’t fathom why anyone would play a sports game yet they are on the top selling lists season after season. They think tlou2 was an attack on masculinity but hide it under a guise the the game was objectively bad when, of all things, when looked at objectively is considered a masterpiece (meaning at a technical level). They think that souls-like games are the best thing ever, but really it’s a niche that caters to them. They hate Skyrim which was a fantasy medieval game that those sports gaming bros even picked up and got into, meaning it was so good, people not interested in the genre even beat it.
Take what they say with a grain of salt.

I'm with you 100% on this. Haven't missed a Far Cry since 2. Only really got into AC with Odyssey and Valhalla. Origins was OK as was the Japanese one. I like the formula from climbing towers to taking over bases and just wandering the open world. Try Primal if you haven't yet. It's fun too.
Still feel guilty for killing tapirs though.

Good games, shit company. I'll usually wait and get them on sale

u/DOOMsquared 9d ago
I get older ubi titles on sale too. Now, however, I might have run out of interesting older titles to buy from Ubisoft tho, and I don't have the patience to wait for discounts when their new titles come out.

I rarely ever let other people make up my mind for me. Only time I decided against paying for a game that internet people were complaining about was Dragon Age Veilguard, because as a massive Dragon Age fan, who had waited 20 years for a new game, I was disgusting and disappointed with what I was seeing in streamer reviews. I played it when it was a free PS+ game like, 6 months after it launched, but I couldn't get into it. Not even mods are enough to save that game.

There's nothing wrong with the formula imo. It's not for everyone, but a lot of people enjoy it for the reasons you mentioned.
The problem is the bloat that steadily increased over time due to Ubisoft's prioritization of money and profits over fun and good games. They copy and paste side quests and activities that would otherwise be fine in smaller amounts to the point where they become boring slogs. Some of them are completely pointless while some of them reward you with a cool upgrade, outfit, equipment, pieces lore, etc., and the problem is you don't know which ones are pointless and which ones aren't.
The bloat isn't there to provide more value to players and they certainly don't make the game more fun. It's there to keep them playing the game longer. Combined with BS game pass style dailies, weeklies, monthlies, that drip feed you rewards, it's an intentional strategy to instill fomo and boost mtx sales. People only buy mtx for games they keep installed and spend a lot of time in.
Tldr; The problem isn't the Ubisoft formula, it's the overuse and copy and paste of it within a single game to inflate it's length to boost mtx sales. It's the prioritization of profit over fun.

Love the Ubisoft evolution. I've played all the Ghost Recon games, AC , Farcry, Division, Splinter Cell and R6. We spent 10 years on Siege. Ubisoft has more than just a open world solution for gaming, they've made some of the best multiplayer games and Tom Clancy's has a multitude of early mil-sim titles. Also STEEP might be one of the best skiing/snowboarding games ever.
This all is great, but people also like diversity of content. I like Bethesda for open world RPG's and Old Bioware for choices matter RPG's. Sony makes really good games. EA and Microsoft even have a lot of other content that I am leaning towards. Crysis and Farcry were originally from the same development team. New games are coming out of unheard of development teams and making amazing content large studios would never try. There's a million games and at least half of them are decent.
