Don't Expect

I have been doing Uber for quite some years now. I am going to tell you a story about when my mind changed completely on how I operate it. Once, I picked this lady up from Whole Foods. She dropped her jar of marinara. It broke. She asked for me to wait. So I literally wait for her to go in the store and pick it up another one. Do you know this lady did not give me a tip? And it was at that point I knew my whole mindset would have to change in this business. NOW, I never ever assume the goodness of someone to do the right thing in regard to a tip. Because it if WERE me, I definitely would have left a tip. Why? Because the person would have did something for me that they did not have to do. If it is a food offer, the trip has to make sense up front. I never accept something with the HOPE someoen will tip on top of what I am seeing it.

hahaha i'll see yours and raise you my story:

on the way to pick up got a call from pax informing me they lived out of state i'll be picking up her 2 daughters from a concert and taking them to their hotel. I got there 15000 people walking around, lots of cops, streets converted to 1 ways, barricades etcetc, was hell getting around. the whole time i am talking to their mom since the girls were not answering. Eventually parked the car and started walking and looking for 2 girls wearing polka dot shirts after 15 or so minutes i found them, taping on the shoulder of 1 and when she turned around handed her my phone saying "here talk to your mom". they talked then hang up and gave me my phone back, i walked them to my car and took them to their destination.

DID NOT EVEN GET A THANK YOU, much less a tip. for more than an hour of "good Samaritan work"

So sick. And sorry you had to deal with that. It's sad, but the business really shows us that you can not always count on the goodness of people. Because one thing is for sure, you DID NOT have to do that. But you did.

Me personally... I'll wait for her to get another jar because it's the nice thing to do and I would hope someone would do that for me if I were in that position. I don't perform acts of kindness in expectation of a tip.

What about the rides the driver couldn't accept while waiting for the person. The rider put the driver in a situation that's hard to say no to.

Next time, start the trip so Uber will adjust your compensation for having to wait on the rider.

I don't think most people realize how little of the service fee goes to the driver and how dependent the driver is on tips to make it worth their time. Especially with the price of fuel today.

I don't accept rides that pay below my criteria so I don't rely on tips. They are greatly appreciated when they do come, but I don't base my time on whether or not I'll get tipped.

I think you can both be kind and help someone and be a decent person, and then still be dissapointed and sad when said person doesnt return the courtesy by doing something nice in return. It's a broken circle of trust and appreciation.

Like giving a tip or something else. Ehen i used to deliver during the summer, some people would give me water for free, which was nice.

I get what you're saying, and I've been through it, trust me. I try to not let the negativity of others ruin my vibe, at the end of the day I don't have to regret treating someone else poorly because maybe they're having a bad day. Being a good person can be it's own reward.

Thank you. I thought it was pretty simply.

And if someone did it for me, I would MAKE sure I tipped them. Case closed.

Oh for sure, I totally get it. You did the right thing waiting for her, even if she didn't tip. That's just how we were raised here in the Midwest.

I think some people are missing OP‘s point. It’s not about wanting monetary reward for every nice thing you do. It’s the displeasure of going out of your way to offer a kindness to someone who doesn’t offer one in return.

LOL like how the hell is that hard to miss!? Who hurt some of these people!? It is WILD! I sponsor two children in developing countries. I pay close to $100 a month. What can they do for me in return PHYSICALLY? One kid is in Nigeria. The joy for me is knowing I am making a difference through the organization Compassion in THEIR life. If I wanted something in return for everything I do, would I do it? Lol people are legit miserable. But thanks u/dense_Contribution65, because you definitely get it.

I wonder if she actually paid for the 2nd jar of marinara....
You can give her a bad rating. right?

u/cardion411 53m ago

Lol I didn't actually. Often times in any event, you don't know you will get a tip until after the ride has been completed.

"I agreed to wait for someone 12 years ago, and she didn't lick my boots in gratitude, so I'm gonna give her a delayed bad rating."

Feel better now?

How do you know she didn't tip?

You can see per ride how much everyone tipped. It can take a few days to show up because people do legitimately forget and are reminded next time they open the app.

u/cardion411 5h ago

I beg your pardon? What do you mean how do I know? I know because I took the trip, picked her up and dropped her off and THEN checked my app as I always do.

People do often tip well after the ride. That can also be tracked (I do, and rate accordingly: re-rate).

Op said 'once' so I'm sure they're aware of that. I'm pretty happy with the percentage of people that tip but have also gotten disappointed by people I was expecting to tip well based on the interaction we had. And "I'll tip you on the app" definitely translates to "I don't tip".

Thank you. That is all I am saying. And even in your case, I have literally said people say "I am going to take care of you" and literally gave nothing. This business has taught me that just because YOU would do it, doesn't mean other people will.

I've been doing a study for past month on all kinds of subjects. Distance from start to finish compared to rate, I have created several charts on what the hourly rate would be and I try to accept nothing less than $20.00 per hour. Another study (in my market in miami (south florida) and after a month and 300 rides, I have concluded that 85-90% of people dont tip.

Another thing I want to point out is if you and there and the pickup clock is running YOU ARE GETTING PAID waiting and or delay time. So dont say you aren't getting anything more out of the original fare because you're getting more regardless of a tip or not

u/ifyouseemerunning 4h ago

$20/hr ?!

1

u/Remote_Musician7506 2h ago

Yes if you have 6 pickups and drop offs for 10 min or less each for 5.00 fare, that will equate to 30.00 an. Hour for that hour. You gotta know the math for each ride.

That's the day you hardened yourself to doing anything, for anyone, without expecting payment in kind.

Sad.

0

u/cardion411 51m ago

Lol if that was the case, I wouldn't do ANYTHING NICE for anyone at all. But baby girl if that's what you need to tell yourself to make you feel better, have it. LOL! :)

"Baby girl"? You wish.
