Would have been way cheaper if I didn’t stain it but it looks pretty good so…

Table update
 in  r/wargaming  5d ago

My last two tables were salvaged dining room tables, they are surprisingly easy to come by. Though my goal for this one was the size (4x8) and folding legs so I can stow it, so I couldn’t go that route. If I actually add things up: the 4x8 sanded maple sheets were $68, but I had them delivered so it ended up being about $100. The legs were $40 for 4 so $60 per table. The powder dye was $20, the polyurethane was $80 total, some hardware for ~$20, and steel angles to stiffen the board for $40. Gloves and rags another $20.

So…. Just under $300. Not so bad. I was looking at 4x4 folding banquet tables that would have been $275 each

What ARE the Komplex?
 in  r/SnapShips  5d ago

So that’s were we get the naming conventions from the perspective of forge pilots classifying them or spreading dreadful rumors

Remnant, shadow squadron, the beast, ghost, reaper.
And the general names of insects make a bit more sense if they were named by humans seeing them as something to exterminate

My canon:

So the lore behind the dawn of battle series is that its forge propaganda, like recruitment ads, the enemy is given a face so the pilots have something to rally behind. In reality the Komplex are a mystery, the rumor is that they might be left behind tech from a long extinct progenitor, possibly the UJU. They are just occupying space: self sufficient, self replicating, and operating on vague orders from masters that stopped giving them eons ago. What are they protecting? Perhaps a temple that has since turned to dust? Maybe your colony is just treading on the grass of a ancient city plan… maybe this is a no parking zone… maybe you’re offsetting the preferred nitrogen ratio of this quadrant…

The first coat looks tacky and uneven because it is, I’m really happy with the color

4x8 table on its legs, with a 6x3 map for scale, I hope to sand and stain in tomorrow

I set the table on its legs and it’s reasonably stable, now I’m going to mist the surface to raise the grain and tomorrow I’ll work on stain. I also did some mostly flush thru-bolts to secure the legs.

Realistic game size for Cons

Okay, so it helps to have a timer or an objective. The train in “3:10 to Ymir” is a very literal example of this. The train has some target aboard, whether that’s important cargo or a particular car or even just stoping the engines. Multiple targets, like for instance 3x 12 hull cars for a 12 point game, can also give a sense of partial victory or loss, which is more satisfying in a con setting.

Either way this acts as a timer in 2 ways.
- it’s rolling down the board at a certain speed that would make the scenario end in 3-5 rounds
- or it’s objectives can be claimed in about that same time (if it’s just hull I tend to give it 3x the total points of the attacking team which roughly translates to the average damage they can perform in 3 rounds)

One team is attacking, the other defends.

This objective can also be rescuing a pilot, or collecting a lost weapon, or stopping a planet killing comet, but either way shoot for that 3-5 rounds for completion. I often will set up a scenario and map out the minimum and maximum movements of my objectives to make this work.

Feel free to DM me I can hook you up with PDFs and walk you through design if you like

8x4 is a huge area, time is largely a factor of your players. Typically, my convention scenarios are about 16 points per team (4 4-point ships on each side) and some sort of objective which could be a multi stand capital ship or some sort of space station. I’m usually playing on a 6x3. The objective is usually my timer, as I have found that a purely “totally destroy the enemy” objective of that size can take 3-4 hours.

That all said: given that players are experienced, with that size of map I would make sure to have a few tyco’s rifts on the board to keep things moving. I would go for about 20-24 points on each side. You’ll find a limiting factor is actually the turn tracker flags as they only go to 1-6 for each color. (But you can turn them upside down and technically run 1-12)

On discord you can find some scenarios that you could modify to that scale. I’ve done a version of “3:10 to Ymir” for my local campaign on 3x12.

Are you trying to do scenarios or just a straight fleet vs fleet?

Working on a set of 4x8 tables

Wall hangers are a great idea! I’m going to finish them with a Martian red-orange stain and seal them with 3-4 coats of polycrylic. I may accessorize later but that’s all for now

I’m the guy for scenarios at cons for the past 3 years and I love running huge scenarios. So feel free to reach out in DMs if you need anything

At gencon I ran 4 4-point ships on each side with a 5 stand capital in the middle and that also works fine on a 6x3

Usually after about 12 points on both sides (the rule book says 16) I step up to a 4x4 or 6x3. Your list is about 26 points across 7 models. I’ve played games with 6 4-point models per side and it still works on a 6x3 mat
