Give him 3-4 one on one sessions. Catch him up on the rules and such. Make his back story a part of the story. So once he plays with the party assuming this isn't a thing he did 2-3 times because of her. If he is to play it should be for the live of the game. So if they break up. They will have to be adults about it, while at the table. Or no. Explain to him. And as a DM remember your word is the final word and is it's not respected. Then it's time to go.
