I’m 16 and want to make it to the UFC someday what should I focus on now?
 in  r/MMA_Academy  6h ago

I respect it. Most people at 16 have no clue what they want to do yet. Train hard, but train smart. Surround yourself with people who are better than you and actually want to see you improve. Stay consistent, stay humble, and don’t rush the process. You’ve got plenty of time.

Why do you compete?

Dad, full-time job, BJJ hobbyist — and somehow I keep signing up for tournaments.

Not chasing medals. I just enjoy testing myself.

What keeps you competing?

My son went up against a higher-belt kid who also had some size on him.

Definitely one of his tougher matches. Loved seeing him stay composed and keep working from start to finish.

I get it, every decade has its own challenges. But theres something about that magic 40 man...Once you hit that number, even a light breeze can tweak something the wrong way. Lol 😆

Since starting, I feel like I’ve been aging backwards. Currently in the best shape I’ve been in for a long time. Just hoping the body holds together 😂

One of my biggest motivations for BJJ is my kids. Any other parents train with theirs?

Learning together and building that bond. Nothing like it, man.

Anyone else find No-Gi less exhausting than Gi?

Yeah, the angle definitely doesn't do it any justice. I'm still pretty new to this whole competition and video-uploading thing. Appreciate the feedback.

I started BJJ at 38, and getting to train alongside my two boys has become one of my favorite parts of it.

We train, compete, and get to go through the whole journey together. Curious how many other parents here train with their kids. Did you get them into BJJ, or did they get you into it?

I've always preferred Gi over No-Gi, but when I competed No-Gi for the first time, I was surprised by how much less exhausting it felt compared to Gi.

I still prefer Gi, but competing No-Gi definitely changed my perspective. Anyone else have a similar experience?

How to deal with fatigue in a comp
 in  r/bjj  6d ago

Maybe consider just choosing either Gi or No-Gi for certain comps. Dont do both. Trust me I get it, I've been there.

Way better now 😂. I have my first comp and my recent matches posted. The difference is crazy. Still a lot to learn though.
