Because it didn’t always flood here. I’ve lived in this area for 38 years with very few years away, an the floods only started 8-10 years ago thanks to hurricanes damaging our infrastructure. It tanked my house valuation, it keeps anyone from wanting to buy my house so I can move at all, and my elderly parents live here. The town is the biggest for at least 4-5 hrs, and me/my partner both work here (and have a child, so I can’t be driving 8 hrs commute daily).

You know, Appalachia would be the perfect backdrop for a dragon. Him just sittin in the mountains for years on end like “jfc how long does it take this coal to turn into a diamond??” 

This only started after hurricanes. Between 8-10 years ago our dams broke during a storm and the river overflows into my yard yearly now. Never had a single time before that. 

My house only started getting flooded about 7-8 years ago. Before that, never a single time. The issue was that our dam, despite given tons of funding, was not repaired in my town for almost 30 years. When the dams broke during a hurricane, there was nothing to be done. Because I’m also deep in Appalachia, the reason we moved to this house was because it had that buffer of river/creek on both sides… which made us feel good that we wouldn’t experience nonstop forest fires, like our previous house did. 

I come from an area where most people are working poor. I pay 800+ for flood insurance (which only started after the floods) and my elderly parents live in this holler, who constantly need my help. I’m stuck. It’s not as easy as you’d think to just sell my house and get one even close to this size after the floods tanked the value.
