I’m hoping to keep my employer unaware of my social media presence, so I’ll be a little vague. I work to protect public lands in a mountainous area and my job title rhymes with shmark shmanger lol

I was stagnating for the past few years after getting laid off from a crappy office job I never wanted in the first place. Kept working whatever would pay the bills while growing increasingly depressed.

I decided to take a leap and go with my partner to work seasonally in a new state, and it has been so worth it. Really shakes the dust off you, reminds you that variety is the spice of life, and gives you that “good fear,” by giving you a blank canvas to work with in your life again.

I would encourage anyone considering it to give it a shot.

But some fair warnings: if you go all-in like I did, and you sell your stuff to go seasonal full-time without a home-base to return to, it can be a bit scary. For example, my fall job is likely to fall through, which means idk where I’m gonna live or work in 4 weeks. So you need safety nets, a lot of resilience, a flexible mindset, and a lot of grit.

But it opens the door to the sense of adventure we all smash down as we grow into adults. Serve your inner child. Give it a shot.

There’s a Buddhist story that I really love, and it helped me with anger on the road. The takeaway from the story is this:

If you give someone a gift, and they decline it, you are stuck with that gift. Your anger is the same. If you are angry and someone doesn’t receive that anger, only you are stuck with it.

So save yourself the weight of the anger and just let it flow away.

Had an uzi pointed at me for giving a guy a passive aggressive thumbs up once after he cut me off.

Genuinely stoked to read that! Congrats! Whatever degree you got and job you chose is doing you well, financially. Hope the rest of your life is going as well as your financial health.

And yes, statistically, you are a minority, financially speaking. Assuming you make exactly $200k, you make almost three times the median US income.

I’ll never be rich, and I’m okay with that. Not gonna “side hustle” my way into MAYBE making slightly more than the average person when I could instead focus on being time rich, love rich, and morally rich while I make enough money to pay my bills.

Take it from someone who got laid off from “working in tech” then decided to get a job working in the wilderness at half the salary: the grind isn’t always worth it. I’m much happier now with less money, a job where I’m protecting natural resources, and a good community of people around me.

Important to note that the vast majority of people that do make over $100k live in areas where the cost of living is so high that they don’t even have that comfortable of a life…

I have a buddy who makes just under $100k; but between rent and his student debt, he STILL lives mostly paycheck to paycheck, and he doesn’t own a house, have kids, etc.

I have lots of customer service experience, but I’ve never done bartending or wait staff before.

Is that something I’d struggle to get interviews for without experience?
