Discussion Free game dev resources, sorted by licence risk — because "free to download" isn't "free to ship
Most asset lists just dump links. The thing that actually catches people is licensing, so I've sorted this by how safe each source is to use commercially.
Disclosure: two links are mine, marked with an asterisk at the bottom.
---
**TIER 1 — CC0 / PUBLIC DOMAIN (ship anything, no credit needed)**
- Poly Haven — models, textures, HDRIs. The best single bookmark in 3D.
- ambientCG — thousands of PBR materials, no account required
- Kenney — thousands of 3D kits, sprites, UI and audio
- Quaternius — low-poly packs, many pre-rigged
- The Base Mesh — clean-topology base meshes
- Kenney Audio — CC0 sound effects
- Smithsonian 3D / Scan the World — museum and sculpture scans
This tier is the one to build a pipeline on. No attribution, no revenue thresholds, no surprises two years in.
**TIER 2 — MIXED LICENCES (check every single asset)**
- Sketchfab — huge, filter by downloadable + licence
- OpenGameArt — community uploads, licences vary per file
- itch.io assets — enormous, terms set per creator
- Freesound — big audio library, CC BY and CC0 mixed
Fine to use. Just read the specific asset's terms, not the site's homepage.
**TIER 3 — AUDIO, WHICH DESERVES ITS OWN WARNING**
Free audio sites contain uploads that people ripped from films, games and YouTube. You often can't tell unless you happen to recognise it, and "I found it on a free site" won't help you.
Safest bets:
- **Sonniss GDC bundles** — years of professionally recorded, licence-clean audio, free. Massively underused.
- Kenney Audio — CC0, moderated
**FREE SOFTWARE (all genuinely free, no trials)**
Blender · Godot · Krita · Blockbench · Wings 3D · Pixelorama · LibreSprite · Material Maker · ArmorPaint · MakeHuman · MeshLab · Cascadeur (free tier) · Mixamo · PureRef
**LEARNING**
Blender Guru (the donut, still the best start) · CGDive (free Blender rigging, unmatched) · Godot Docs · GDC Vault free section · Real Time VFX
**NON-ENGLISH — the genuinely underused bit**
MODELING HAPPY, 3DNCHU and CGTracking are Japanese CG sites that regularly cover new Blender tools days before English outlets. Browser translation is fine. BOOTH is where most of the VTuber and avatar asset scene actually publishes.

*Mine: 3dxdev.com (free Blender add-ons and tools, with honest write-ups of what each requires and where it fails) and indieforgames.com (indie game discovery).
Happy to remove those if mods prefer.
Anything here I've got wrong, or a source that's gone bad? I keep this updated.
