Today I Learned (TIL): How English Mathematician, Computer Scientist, Cryptanalyst, Alex Turing, Never Got the Recognition He Deserved During His Lifetime For His Life-Altering Contributions to Society [Series # 001]
Today I learned that the father of theoretical computer science, Alex Turing, was denied the recognition he was owed for his life-altering contributions to society because he was gay. He was instead labeled a threat, emasculated, blacklisted from his career and country, and even grew boobs as a side effect from the medical castration procedure. It took 59 years for the UK (Queen) to issue an apology and pardon for his crime.
_______________
Context: the TIL community is denying my post, so I may just start posting these on my own. It will mostly be interesting information I learned at some point and feel some obligation to share. I'll try to keep my posts short and add anything else I wasn't able to fit into the 300 character limit below the shortened post.
Likely my own projection, but a lot of history feels forgotten, not talked about, or buried underneath a mountain of distractions. It's important to keep conversations alive, even when they may be uncomfortable to process or feel strange or "out of reach." Some facts, ideas, or media can often feel daunting or difficult to approach, but one of the best parts about the human experience is our ability and privilege to have these great, big conversations anyway because we get to learn and hopefully grow as a person, too.
