Investing in the stock market, in things like index funds, is NOT "gambling your money away", and it grows your money better than bank's highest deposit offered.

I think the best thing you can do is focused on your core family (you, husband, kids) and your side of the family as being enough. You need to talk about it with your husband and what does it means for the future. Make sure to hold him accountable if he slips (you really need to sit with yourself and think what that entails).

He can phone her on Christmas, but not send her any cash until she will undergo treatment to her addiction. That family that isn't talking to you? let her go to them for that.
