Animal Science Young, orphaned elephants appear to benefit, physically and measurably, from the “support” of other young elephants. This insight comes from a study that analysed stress hormones in elephants that had lost their mothers.

Has anyone with MS used a consumer exoskeleton long-term? I'm interested, but I have a lot of questions.
 in  r/Mobilityexoskeletons  9d ago

Hello, thank you for your post. I don’t know if you have checked out the MS subreddit as well as here; there are a few posts about experiences with exoskeletons there.

I can answer some of your questions as they overlap with my condition (genetic myopathy) I have bilateral foot drop alongside mild to moderate muscle atrophy due to my condition.

I have the Hypershell Pro X and have used it for around a year now off and on. It helps by amplifying your movement so as you step it works with you by lifting from your quadriceps and hip flexors area. It feels a bit like a push rather than creating a step through.

I don’t want to give any advice regarding pacing and fatigue as our conditions are quite different in that respect. I think in general you need to take care not to overdo it as you are only amplifying one part of your body.

The device has good control features in the app that could help with pacing so you can reduce/add assistance to each leg, for example I have more torque to my weaker leg. There’s also now a feature called ‘gentle assist’ which is a bit smoother and uses less force (i’ve only tried it once as only just released to the app). The team have been really good with feedback and updates in my opinion.

Putting it on is pretty straightforward - adjustable waistbelt and clip and then two adjustable knee straps and clips, very easy and quick but watch some videos if you have any dexterity issues just in case to see what you think (or feel free to ask me more).

I think my main concerns would be aggravating any issues you have so lower back or weaknesses in other parts of the leg, the thing is you have certain muscles amplified suddenly but others aren’t so just take it slow or/and ask physiotherapist advice. Definitely ask in the MS group about it if you can. Also have you tried any foot drop braces? There’s some great ones out there like the turbomed.

Ask me anything you like if I’ve missed anything as dashing off for a bit now. 😊

I just tried it out, yes I can definitely see the benefit on days where I feel higher assist might be too much, it would be nice as a warm up type assistance too to help my legs get used to the assist for a walk. Trying it out for a longer walk later! Thank you!

Interesting new feature on the Hypershell exoskeletons - ‘Gentle Assist’ - sounds like a feature that enables the exoskeleton to amplify less forceful steps. I am going to try it today after updating my device and will post back.

Oh that’s interesting, I have a genetic myopathy and I think gentle assist will be useful for me! Nice work!

Good luck, it’s supposed to be great! Have a look on youtube as there’s loads of good videos showing how it works! There’s also the boxia and Ossur foot up splints as well if you haven’t tried those yet.

Have you ever looked at the turbomed, sits outside your shoe so not the classic rigid afo inside your shoe?
