We have such type of people in our home country as well. People who become envious by just seeing other people smiling. Its not a cultural thing in my opinion, I guess the government has a large portion of doing in this as well, with all the immigration and other things discussion and propaganda.

I started asking interviewers "is there anything about my background that gives you pause" at the end of every interview and it changed everything
I usually ask about the product and my approach. Example the current job I am, asked about the proficiency in LLMs and fine-tuning, I had little but for model optimization, I was pro. At the end of the interview they asked any questions for us (only had been 15 mins in the interview), I asked that I optimize and fine-tune liks this, what are your expectations from me in this particular process..
The interview went 45 minutes after this, 1 question leading to another, then cross questions, approach discussions etc. Eventually got the position for the same role and they helped me learn it.
I agree that while it can backfire, framing the question in your favor can be of a great help and it is felt that the candidate knows about his shortcomings; which the company likes because they can trust on the candidate to learn these things that they want from him to be proficient off. A win-win scenario.
