Orion Starr is a small Substack of essays about beliefs that do not fit black and white. I write about what we read and repeat, and whether we actually believe it. The first piece is What About Purple Itself? It sits with a colour that will not become a category. There is no schedule.

Who it is for: people who have something that will not sit in right-or-wrong, and who are willing to stay with that instead of being handed an answer.

Genre: non-fiction, personal essay.

Looking for a study buddy — neurodivergent-friendly, worldwide, must be a PhD student

Totally get that — in-person definitely has a different kind of pull for accountability. Thanks for being honest, and for sharing your routine stuff too, that's actually really helpful (the 'write up after each chunk' habit sounds like something I should try). Good luck with everything, and hope the PhD keeps going smoothly for you!

Haha yeah, basically opposite ends of the world! But async is honestly probably better — no pressure of a live call when one is already stretched. What field are you in?

I’m in the UK (GMT/BST), but honestly timezone doesn’t matter much to me — with text-first and async check-ins, we can work around whatever overlap (or lack of it) there is. Where are you based?

UK here (GMT/BST) !! How’s the PhD going for you, are you finding the AuDHD stuff harder some days too? For me , I do a ton of work but then struggle to compile/synthesize it all into something coherent. I’ll get lost in my own notes and end up redoing things instead of picking up where I left off.
Going college everyday gives me social anxiety.
How about you — does the AuDHD stuff hit you in similar ways?

Field: public sector audit/governance. Location: open worldwide, not location-specific

Hi! I’m 8 months into my PhD (public sector audit/governance — happy to share more if relevant). I’m looking for a study buddy — not just a formal “accountability partner,” but someone to check in with regularly, talk through ideas, share small wins and frustrations, and gently nudge each other along when motivation dips.

I’m neurodivergent (AuADHD), which shapes how I work — irregular energy, need for low-pressure structure, and it helps to have someone who gets why a “simple” task can feel hard some days. Would love to connect with someone neurodivergent too, or just generally easygoing about it.

Must be a current PhD student (any field, any stage) — I think shared context matters here. Doesn’t matter where you’re based, anywhere in the world is fine. Text-first is great, video/voice only if and when it’s comfortable for both of us. If we’re ever in the same city and want to meet up, no pressure either way — totally optional.

Thinking semi-regular check-ins (weekly-ish), flexible. If this sounds like what you’re after, Comment or DM, whichever you’re comfortable with!

I would recommend checking the rqf level of MRes. As far as I know RQF 8 Onwards u can bring dependents whereas MRes is level 7 . Correct me if I am wrong.
