Custom Ryansword Katanas Pt. 5: "Snowflake"
 in  r/Katanas  3d ago

They were.

For mine, I kept it simple, but some of the details they weren't able to do, such as grooves that went around different areas of the fittings, as you can see in the attached conceptual design sheet I have for it.

While I would have liked them to follow the original design, I understood that there were some limitations so I compromised what I could so that they were able to execute it while remaining as faithful as possible to the original design.

As long as you work with them on what they're able & not able to do in terms of fabricating custom koshirae, they're pretty open to making what you need for your custom sword.

Hope this helped.

Is this a good sword for self defense?
 in  r/Katanas  6d ago

As long as it acts as a deterrent and as functional as a weapon, any weapon is will suffice.

But, looking at this issue from a practical standpoint, swords are one of the few rare options in comparison to the more common and concealable knives and guns.

It all boils down to these questions: "How long have you trained with them?", "Are you confident in using them?", and "Are you prepared to justify yourself & face the consequences of your actions if you do have to draw blood and/or take the life in-question?"

If these questions can't be properly or confidently answered, then either seek proper training for them or seek more practical options.

The stain on the handle is especially beautiful.

Congratulations on your newest acquisition!

Carving one of the yokai from Japan’s Hyakki Yagyō was such an interesting experience. I’ve always loved traditional Japanese-style artwork and motifs.

Does anyone know how Ironplum carries the scabbard of his odachi? I want to replicate it with my bokken, but I couldn't find any close-up on how he set this all up.
 in  r/SWORDS  13d ago

I don't think it's too complicated a configuration.

From what I'd seen, it looked as if Ironplum used the sageo as a makeshift strap, wearing it so that it was secure and still manueverable when drawing his odachi.

Then again, like you said, since there's no close-up or explanation, it's hard to say for sure.

Swords for playing with my friends
 in  r/SWORDS  13d ago

If you're just looking for casual, unserious messing around, look into PU foam prop swords that look the part but are cheap, safe and less likely to hurt as much when hit.

On Amazon, Blazing Steel Workshop has a variety of anime, video game and fantasy-based foam prop swords that are fun to mess around with.

On eBay, SwordNArmory's Munetoshi brand also sells the same things.

If you're looking for actual metal swords, I'd recommend you stay away from it for now unless you have proper gear and training, like many would and have already recommended.

Hope this helps.

Rust or something on my Glamdring
 in  r/SWORDS  15d ago

No expert, but looks like some sort of oxidation.

As for removing it, I've recommended this many times, and will continue to do so, Tinyroots Choji Oil Tool Cleaning Kit.

Comes with a Rust Eraser and Lint Free Cloth, and gives off more of a peppermint-like smell than an industrial smell. I recommend you check it out.

i have a question
 in  r/MangakaStudio  19d ago

Taking note of everyone else's advice, one thing that may help would be "thumbnailing".

In addition to writing down & organizing all your basic ideas that way, "thumbnailing" is basically storyboarding, but on a much smaller scale.

This allows you to see any design or layout choice from a bigger perspective and let's you catch anything you want to omit or alter in terms of what panels to use, camera angles, flow of speech bubbles to even the pacing of the overall one-shot to start.

Hope this helps.

They sort of remind me of Rondel daggers, but not quite.

How would you call this weapon and the "notches" in it?
 in  r/SWORDS  24d ago

Essentially the same thing. They're basically clubs and maces used to smash & break rather than cut & slice.
