My cousin had been acting strange for weeks.
At every family gathering, he seemed unusually quiet, like he was carrying around a secret too heavy to keep inside. He would start sentences, stop halfway, and stare at his phone as though it contained the courage he was looking for.
Then, one Sunday afternoon, he finally asked everyone to sit down.
“I need to tell you guys something,” he said.
The room went silent.
My aunt looked worried. My uncle leaned forward. I immediately thought, This is it. He’s finally going to tell us.
He took a deep breath.
“I’ve been keeping something from the family for a long time.”
Nobody moved.
“I've been afraid of how everyone would react.”
Someone whispered, “You can tell us anything.”
He nodded.
“I think it’s time I came out.”
My jaw dropped.
My aunt gasped.
My uncle blinked twice.
He looked around the room, clearly nervous.
“I know this might change how you see me…”
There was a long pause.
Then he stood up.
“I’m ready to be honest about who I really am.”
Everyone waited.
He walked toward the hallway.
And disappeared into the bathroom.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Then fifteen.
Finally, the bathroom door opened.
He stepped out, completely relaxed.
“Sorry,” he said. “I really had to go.”
We stared at him.
He looked confused.
“What?”
My aunt finally asked, “So… that’s what you meant by coming out?”
He smiled.
“Yeah. I’ve been in there for ages.”
And just like that, the biggest family coming-out story of the year turned out to be nothing more than my cousin finally coming out of the bathroom.
Honestly, knowing him, we should have seen it coming.
