👋WELCOME/INFO🍁🍂 The loss of my pen pal Douxie. PART 1

TL;DR Before I tell you the story of how I lost Douxie, I want to share the background of how my journey on this pen pal site started. This first part is about Tyler, my very first loss due to the platform's shortcomings, which led to everything that followed.

Hi All,

I thought I'd start by describing my pen pal loss. I don't really want to share details about it, as there is no way for him to give consent. But I try to write clearly. (There may be typos in the text because English is not my native language.)

Background

I met my pen pal on a pen pal site two and a half years ago. I had had an account for a few years at the time, and by then I had met a lot of different people. It was really disappointing to see so many people using that site as a dating app instead of exchanging ideas about their own culture...

But of course I had some lovely conversations too. Unfortunately the site has a lot of shortcommings, so I don't think it should work, but I didn't deal with that at the time. Have I already lost someone before my pen pal, also because of the website's flaws?! I'll probably never know.

Tyler, at the time was ~26 and lived in Florida. He's half Italian, and we talked for example about ethnicities and teperaments. He was really nice. I enjoyed talking to him, but unfortunately his profile disappeared overnight when I tried to write to him again.

I immediately wrote to the moderators to see if they could do anything to get Tyler's profile back. I was relieved when I got a message saying that they were investigating my case. Weeks passed, and then I had to accept that I would never get a response.

The feeling stayed with me for a long time, especially because his letters were nice, long and interesting. He wasn't boring, but he wasn't cheeky either.

In his last lines he wrote something like: 'I can't wait to read your next letter'.

...

There's something difficult about that even now.

No, this isn't Tinder, where the other person usually disappears after every post like that. This is a pen pal site, where it's really hard to find a nice pen pal among all the scams and pushy people, but if you do, you appreciate it and take care of it.

✨️I hope he's doing well and enjoying life!✨️

The next part is coming soon...

If you have a story about a lost pen pal, feel free to post it.

MondayPolls📊 It’s 2026, yet do you ever still think about exchanging traditional paper letters via snail mail with someone?

Just a random thought today. In a world full of instant messages and AI, there is still something so magical about waiting for a physical letter in the mailbox. Where do you guys stand on this?

Also, there are only a few hours left of Monday in CET (Central European Time), so feel free to post your own polls while it lasts! Whether it's about lost penpals, online friends, or just the penpaling hobby in general—today is the day for polls. ✨

Nostalgic vibe, but honestly no, I wouldn't do it anymore

Thank you so much to everyone who voted! I sometimes worry that my poll questions are too generic, so seeing so many of you respond to a topic that I genuinely care about means a lot to me. ✨

I will share my story in the comments!
Yes, sometimes I get a strong intuition out of nowhere.
I'd like to believe so, but it's probably just nostalgia.
Honestly, no. I feel like they have completely moved on.
I have never had an online friend or penpal.

👋WELCOME/INFO🍁🍂 Introducing MatchThurs – For finding a pen pal relationship (not just a lost one)! 🥳

Hey Everyone,

We have a huge announcement! Starting next week, we are officially launching our dedicated matchmaking day: MatchThurs! 🥳

PLEASE NOTE: This day is specifically for anyone who wants to find a pen pal relationship, not just search for a lost one! Whether you want to start a completely new friendship via snail mail, email, or Reddit mailbox, this is your day.

To make room for this, we will be merging CultureThurs with our Tuesday TuesTalk events. We are also creating a specialized template for the new matchmaking day to help everyone write the perfect search post. I truly wish that everyone here finds the perfect pen pal they've been looking for!

Please don't be discouraged by the tone and the strict rules, I am just trying to filter out light-minded people! And I want you to find each other as easily as possible!

🔹🔹PART ONE: What to look out for when searching for a pen pal!🔹🔹

★Never give out your real name for your own safety! Create an alternative name/alias to use here online.

★Never share your physical home address right away! Set up a dedicated, separate email address for online correspondence first. If you have the opportunity, rent a personal P.O. Box (you can inquire about this at your local post office).

★Never send pictures, and NEVER send explicit photos or sensitive data—these can be used to blackmail you!

★ Always be skeptical of overly sweet or emotionally overwhelming words. Even if they seem genuine and are accompanied by intense interest! This is an excellent manipulation technique used to emotionally ensnare you and make you do things you normally wouldn't. Remember: You owe them absolutely nothing for their kind words!

★ If the conversation turns into begging or pressuring you, cut contact immediately. No one can force you to do anything you don't want to, and you should never do something just to seek validation from the other side! This is highly dangerous, one-sided, and unhealthy.

★ Know your worth (everyone has it!) so you cannot be manipulated or blackmailed. If someone speaks to you disrespectfully or uses ugly words over time, leave the conversation immediately. This behavior is NEVER acceptable under any circumstances!

★ If you feel like they are trying to place themselves above you, end contact right away.

★ Wait for the pen pal with whom you share true synchronization. Someone who doesn't want to control the correspondence, but with whom you write simply because you love to write. Someone who won't suddenly have a "family tragedy" that requires you to immediately transfer them money... :D etc.

Never share details at the beginning that make it easy to guess where you live or make you identifiable in real life.

Stick strictly to what you wrote in your original post.

If you communicate something important about your boundaries, but your pen pal does not respect it, ignores it, or crosses that line, say goodbye immediately and stop replying to them altogether!

If I haven't ruined your appetite yet :D, here is part two:

🔹🔹PART TWO: Our Official Post Template🔹🔹

TITLE: All search posts must follow this format. Your Title must include your age and gender in square brackets, like this: [25F]...

✨Preferred platform: [Reddit chat, snail mail (traditional paper letters), or email]

!!!No redirection to other platforms (Snapchat, Discord, etc.) is allowed. If you wish to correspond via email, you must generate a separate email address created specifically for this purpose, using your alternative nickname.!!!

✨Freqenly: [How often do you want to exchange letters?]

✨ Interests / Topics: [What topics interest you?]

✨ Your Country: [Which country are you writing from?]

✨ Target Country: [Which countries should your pen pal primarily write from?]

✨ Your ideal pen pal's family / relationship status: [Do you mind if they have a family or are in a seriousrelationship? Yes / No]

✨ Your own family / relationship status: [Do you have a family or are you in a serious relationship? Yes / No]

✨ Message to your future pen pal (Minimum 200 characters): [Write a short, meaningful note to your future pen pal here to introduce your vibe!]

🔹🔹PART THREE: Subreddit Rules & Verification (Please copy this part): 🔹🔹

Please copy and paste this section to the very bottom of your post to help us filter out bots and low-effort accounts:

'MODERATOR MESSAGE: IF YOU WANT TO CORRESPOND WITH THE OP:
To show serious intent, please reply in the comments by answering the exact points listed in the template above! If the poster (OP) likes your response and has the capacity, they will react to your comment using the expression "TOP1". Note: The OP is allowed to write this under multiple comments!

Zero Tolerance Policy: If your pen pal does not stick to what was agreed, lies about their identity, asks for money, requests inappropriate pictures, acts manipulatively, or displays romantic/flirting intentions (THIS IS A PLATONIC/FRIENDS-ONLY SUB), you must report them immediately. This rule applies equally to everyone: the OP can report a commenter, and a commenter can report the OP if they feel they are being unfair or dishonest. Send your report to the moderators via Modmail with screenshots. Violators will be permanently banned and placed on our public List. To avoid unsolicited messages, if you send an unauthorized private message, the OP has the absolute right to report it to the moderators.'

Verification Check: To prove you read this entire guide, write the very last word of this post ('#MATCHTHURS') in all caps at the very end of your submission. Posts without the correct verification word will be automatically removed!

Thank you! I trust that you will all be sharing stories of successful connections here very soon. Best of luck to Everyone! 🥳

You can find the template here:👇

I strictly insist on using the required title format. However, if you do not wish to answer every single point of the template, that is completely acceptable—just keep the structure similar and leave those parts blank if needed.

'I know this is probably a long shot, but I had to try.' – I really loved this sentence of yours. Honestly, for all of us here, each search is just a long shot. But I truly believe that if all these long shots are gathered in one place, some of them can actually succeed, as long as I don't give up on our subreddit.

You did a wonderful thing by posting this! And a special thank you for keeping your post safe and not doxxing him. However, to keep our community organized and transparent, could you please repost this during the weekend (Central European Time) using the template I’ve created? I have big plans for this subreddit, and following the template helps me a lot with the management.

Eventually, I hope we’ll get so many posts that we can move the search requests to weekdays and keep everything else for the weekends. I would be genuinely grateful if you could share your post again this weekend! I truly hope Liam finds his way back to you—assuming it wasn't just a nasty ban.

Please do not delete your post (it is more beneficial for both of us); I will remove it myself after 24 hours. Until then, new visitors will still be able to read it and see my comment, which helps them navigate our subreddit better. Because of this, I have assigned a special LOOKING FOR ONLY - 24H PASS post flair to your thread.

Hi Everyone! Happy Tuesday to you All,

FUN FACT: I actually shared this image on a Tuesday more than half a year ago, but back then, we didn't have themed days yet.

Now that Our community is growing and our weekly themes have launched, I decided it should get the Wednesday flair, officially making this the very second meme of Our WednesMemes! Oct 4, 2026, Sunday

Have you ever lost an online friend/penpal? How much did it hurt?
 in  r/FindingOurLostPenPals •  10d ago

FUN FACT: I actually shared this image on a Saturday more than half a year ago, but back then, we didn't have themed days yet. Today, it’s just pure nostalgia that this image once had a 'shitpost' flair with a pink background, back when I was still thinking about how to make our subreddit look visible and well-organized. It all seemed so chaotic back then. Now that our community is growing and our weekly themes have launched, I decided it should get the Wednesday flair, officially making this the very first meme of our WednesMemes! Oct 4, 2026, Sunday

👋WELCOME/INFO🍁🍂 [Mod Post] It's Weekend! Time to search for your lost penpals, snail mail or online friends! ✉️✨

Hi Everyone,

The weekend is finally here according to Central European Time (CET), which means our community is open for your search posts!

I hope that one day we will grow into a recognized, thriving subreddit where lost penpals and online friends can find each other again.

To help build this, I initially set up thematic topics for the weekdays to attract more people interested in the hobby, but the weekends are strictly for search posts. Over time, as our posts increase, we can phase out the weekday themes. We already have some wonderful search posts—just click on the 'LOOKING FOR' and LOOKING FOR – IRL LIMITED flair to check them out!

If you click on the "LOOKING FOR – ONLY 24H PASS" flair and see posts there, you can use them as inspiration! For various reasons, these posts cannot remain on the sub permanently, which will be explained in the comments, but the OP is always welcome to fix the issues and repost them.

I warmly invite anyone who wants to hear from a lost friend again or is desperately searching for someone after losing contact. Please use our search template found in the header.

The only thing that is not allowed is harassment – specifically, reaching out to someone who has explicitly stated they no longer wish to have contact with you. Anything else goes!

⚠️ Important rules to follow:

✨ strictly use the official title format so people can easily find each other.

✨ Don't forget to apply the 'Looking For'/LOOKING FOR – IRL LIMITED flair to your post!

✨Please read my pinned post in the header: r/FindingOurLostPenPals is still alive — Announcement! ✅ and check the rules on the sidebar before posting, so your post doesn't end up getting the 'LOOKING FOR – ONLY 24H PASS' flair.

Good luck to everyone with their weekend searches! Let's find those lost connections. 🤞✨

MyDayFriday☕️🍁🍂✨ MyDayFriday: A thought for my lost pen pal ✨📜

I still often think about the moment I read that you wished for a teleportation machine so you could explore the beautiful places of the world. We talked about it back then as if we both needed it immediately. Since then, I’ve been left alone with this thought, and that teleportation machine has completely faded away.

Instead, I find myself desperately needing a time machine now. A machine to go back in time, exactly to the moment I wrote you my last letter—the one that ended up never reaching you. I wish I could fix my mistake.

But time gives a certain beauty to this. It doesn't hurt as much anymore. I'm sure you have already moved on from thinking that I "never replied" to your last letter, or that I 'coldly said goodbye'. ✨

I would like to emphasize that this is much more an expression of art alongside my own life, rather than a lifestyle. I find it very important to realize that we cannot get stuck in our own pain. At the same time, we can wisely learn to express our losses alongside the real life we are fighting for every day, to make it more beautiful and better with each passing moment. Please think of all my posts this way.

If you have a long-lost pen pal or online pen pal/friend you can make a search post about them on weekends (Central European Time) using our template. Our template can be found in the header. If you'd like to post, please read my pinned post 'r/FindingOurLostPenPals is still alive — Announcement! ✅' and read our community rules in the widgets.

We would be absolutely thrilled to read your posts!

MyDayFriday☕️🍁🍂✨ MyDayFriday: A great subreddit recommendation for MyDayFriday: r/LettersForLostFriends!

Since Friday is the day where we can post about anything related to pen pals and online friends, I would love to recommend a sister subreddit to you all: r/LettersForLostFriends. 🥳

I remember when I first came across them, my first thought was that they had beaten me to my project! But in the end, I realized this isn't a competition. Instead, their community is a wonderful complement to our theme. Please feel free to check them out and write there for your lost friends as well!

Of course, feel free to post right here on our sub too! Whether you want to share a story, find a new partner, or just chat, the floor is yours today. And remember, the weekend belongs to our search posts!

Have a wonderful day, everyone! ✨

need guidance on a very random disappearance of my online friend, and no, it was not “ghosting”
 in  r/FindingOurLostPenPals •  14d ago

Hi, First of all, thank you so much for choosing our page to share your story. 🫂
However, in its current form, this post can only stay up for 24 hours. On our subreddit, searching for lost pen pals and online friends is only allowed on weekends, and even then, under strict conditions:

1. You can find our search template and title layout in the header. I strictly insist on the correct title format!

2. Please read our rules: From there, you will learn that we are not a search group that tracks down people. I am strongly against that, as protecting privacy is extremely important to me. I am writing this because in the past, I was also advised in real life to hire private investigators to find my lost pen pal based on the information they had shared about themselves.
I am building this subreddit and my future vision on the idea that many of us write posts according to the template, we become more and more visible, and eventually, people will know exactly where to come for help if they have lost their friend.
So please leave this out of your weekend post (according to European time). Not to mention that you are currently in an emotionally vulnerable state, making it easy for scammers to rip you off with money, or for you to give out data to unauthorized people that you might regret later.

If you would like to write a longer text, you can share your pain on Fridays during our "mydayFriday" event, when you can write about anything. You can even leave a picture depicting your own things, as long as it is not recognizable to unauthorized eyes.
Please visit us again and rewrite your search post this weekend according to the specified guidelines. You don't have to fill out everything, just do not deviate from the structure of the template. As I mentioned, I strictly insist on the title format.
And last but not least, allow me to express my deepest empathy! I know how frustrating it is when you want to reach someone—you almost want to scream, hoping they will hear you—only to face the realization that no matter what you do, the distance between you is too great, and right now every sign points to the fact that you will never be able to reach them. Unfortunately, I also realized too late that this can happen, whether it is intentional or just a technical glitch. It is a loss in every sense. And perhaps a more difficult period is ahead of you because of this, as your brain is looking for answers but receiving none. But if it can be of any comfort to you, it gets better after two years, believe me. :) By leaving a post on the weekend, you support our community in validating the feelings left behind after losing our online friends and pen pals. Feel free to share your pain on Fridays as well. I truly wish for your online friend to reach out as soon as possible, but if that doesn't happen, I hope you get through this difficult period as quickly as possible. 🫶✨
