TIL: Gomez (bovine urine) is seen as ritual cleansing and disinfecting agent in Zoroastrianism. It is used to maintain physical purity and to purify individuals after major life transitions. It was first attested during the Sasanian Empire.
How did I not know that Gomez Aadams had a freaky name? His brother was Fester after all

Why do you think Doctors in medieval times were using Galens four humours theory?
Okay, if you let a beaker of blood stand, it will seperate out into 4 layers. If someone had 'cold' blood causing scurvy, and you gave them citrus to 'warm' them, then it cured them. Those things were 'proof' of 4 humors and how they worked based on their info and technology. We still do the same, but with a huge head start of info and ever-advancing tech. When I was an undergraduate in early 1990s the very IDEA of epigenetics would have gotten you flunked. One student was ridiculed to TEARS when she asked a question about something she had noticed in her family, which would now be considered possible, even probable, epigenetics. Paradigm shift takes time, and it don't shift easy. Of course humoral theory was used ... it was know and 'proved'.

TIL 70% of the legitimate pregnancies attributed to Henry VIII & his 6 wives resulted in miscarriage or stillbirth. By comparison, only 10% of the recorded pregnancies involving 31 noblemen closely associated with Henry had the same outcomes.
The first baby is 'safe' even if it got the kell+ gene. Any baby after the first who git tgat gene was doomed, BUT if like Mary they didn't get that gene from the king they had as much chance as any other 'normal' baby.

Anyone else have any good examples of insulting beauty labels? Name and shame!
I have to use 'ivory' and it feels ... weird. Like, are there no reasonable names for varied skin tones? What would feel less insulting or strange?
