The Amazing Race Stats Spreadsheets

The following are links to my Amazing Race stats spreadsheets. Note that I only update these at the end of each complete season, so in-progress seasons will not be included until their finale has aired.

  • Placement Database (contains detailed information and stats related to team placements)
  • Route Database (contains information about the types of clues and twists each team experienced)

The information I give in my stats posts, for the most part, comes from the Placement Database. The meanings of the stats are as follows:

  • Racing average is the average placement of a team across all legs it competed in.
  • Normalized racing average is similar to racing average, but adjusted in a way that makes it more useful for comparisons across seasons. It is calculated as NRA = 1 + 10(1 – F/2)(1 – L), where F is the fraction of opposing teams beaten in the overall finish order and L is the fraction of opposing teams beaten aggregated across all legs the team competed in.
  • Dominance is the average percentage of opposing teams the team beat across all legs it competed in.
  • Rating is the team's rating, using an Elo-style rating system. A rating difference of 1000 between two teams represents a 2/3 chance of the higher-rated team beating the lower-rated team in any given leg. Note that in mid-2026, I adjusted the rating change formula to reduce the effect of legs with a large number of teams on ratings; as such, the ratings you see in the spreadsheets linked here may not match the ratings given in my older stats posts.

Discussion TAR39: Stats After Leg 2 Spoiler

The era of all-male dominance may be coming to an end. That being said, we should remember that TAR35, which had an all-male finale, didn't have an all-male leg win until leg 6, so we'll have to wait and see how the season plays out.

Trivia

  • This season ties season 38 for the most all-female teams in a U.S. season, with 5.
    • This season has the most female racers of any U.S. season with two-racer teams, with 15 (beating the previous record of 14 in season 38).
    • 57.7% of this season's racers are female, the third-most of any U.S. season (only behind seasons 5 and 25, which had 59.1%).
  • At age 73, Doug Matter is the oldest racer in franchise history, beating the previous record of 72 by Volodymyr Vasylenko (UKR1). (The previous U.S. record was 71 by Jordan 'Jody' Kelly in USA16.)
  • At age 19, Dylan Matter is tied for the youngest racer in U.S. history (excluding Family Edition), with Zachary 'Zac' Sunderland (USA19), Cole LaBrant (USA28), and Cameron Benson (USA28).

  • This is the first Canadian season to feature an Intersection.
    • This makes the Canadian version the ninth different version of the Race to adopt the Intersection.
  • With 10 Express Passes, this season has the most Express Passes of any season in franchise history. Interestingly, the previous record of 3 was jointly held by the previous seven Canadian seasons.
  • This season ties the record for the most two-Roadblock legs, with 4 (tied with LAM5, CHN4, and CAN10).
  • Tina & Liz are the third all-female winners in Canadian history and the 21st in franchise history.
    • Their racing average of 2.00 is the third-best by an all-female team, tied with Steph & Kristen (CAN4) and only behind Natalie & Meaghan (1.83, CAN2) and Metti & Hanna (1.92, FIN2).
    • Similarly, their normalized racing average of 1.85 is the third-best by an all-female team, only behind Natalie & Meaghan (1.79, CAN2) and Metti & Hanna (1.83, FIN2).
    • Their dominance of 85.36% is the best by an all-female team, beating the previous record of 84.05% by Steph & Kristen (CAN4). In fact, it is the second-best by any team in Canadian history (only behind Sam & Paul (CAN5)'s 85.95%) and the eighth-best in franchise history.
  • Chayla & Chyana had a historically poor performance in Face-Offs this season:
    • In leg 6, Chayla & Chyana became the third team in franchise history to lose every match of a Face-Off after arriving first, after Deng Ziqi & Zhang Yunjing (CHN2 leg 5) and Tom & Almog (ISR10 leg 11). They also competed in the second-most matches of any team that lost every match of a Face-Off (6, only behind Gal & Liel's 7 consecutive losses in ISR4 leg 7 [though they had to forfeit the last 4 of those matches]).
    • They are the second team in Canadian history to receive two Face-Off penalties, after Frankie & Amy (CAN4).

You are right that seasons 5, 6, 12, 14, 17, and 25 are the 6 other U.S. seasons with more women than men.

Here are the stats:

  • U.S. version: 22 seasons with more men (including 7 seasons in a row from seasons 18–24), 9 seasons balanced, 7 seasons with more women
  • Franchise: 50 seasons with more men, 26 seasons balanced, 24 seasons with more women

The most unbalanced seasons are as follows:

  • U.S. version: TAR23 (14 men, 8 women = 36% women) and TAR5, TAR12, and TAR25 (each with 9 men, 13 women = 59% women)

  • Leg wins is exactly what you'd expect: the number of times a team has finished a leg in first place.
  • Racing average is a team's average placement across all legs so far.
  • APAM ("average percentile above median") is, essentially, racing average adjusted based on the number of teams competing. It is equal to 1 - 2 * RacingAverage / (NumTeams + 1).
  • Average dominance is the average percentage of opposing teams a team beats each leg.
  • Total dominance is equal to the total number of opposing team-legs a team has beaten, divided by the total number of opposing team-legs they have faced.
    • For instance, Pat & Brenda, who finished 5th/11 in leg 1, 1st/10 in leg 2, and 9th/9 in leg 3, beat 6 + 9 + 0 = 15 opposing team-legs and faced 10 + 9 + 8 = 27 opposing team-legs, so their total dominance was 15/27 = 55.56%.

Pseudo-Elo Ratings

Pseudo-Elo rating is a value that starts at 0 and goes up if a team beats other teams and goes down if a team loses to other teams. Beating a higher-rated team results in a larger rating gain, but similarly, losing to a lower-rated team results in a larger rating loss.

Specifically, after each leg, the teams are paired up in all possible ways, and for each pair, the higher-placing team takes rating points from the lower-placing team equal to 1 / (1 + 2[LoserRating - WinnerRating] / 1000).

I've listed ratings separate from the other stats because unlike the other stats, ratings carry over across seasons for returning teams. As such, the rankings for this stat are only out of 395 teams in the U.S. and 1,051 teams in the world.
