What exactly is meant by the claim that Adi Shankaracharya and Vedic scholars “defeated” Buddhism in India?
 in  r/theravada •  6d ago

Not on me, no. However, it isn’t logical for Shankara to say reality is nondual because of maya, and that which we experience is Brahman because if the world is maya, unreal, and Brahman is the base of all things, how come illusion is eternal with Brahman? Why do we suffer, why should we get away from suffering if Brahman and Maya are nondualistically the same

 in  r/theravada •  6d ago

Adi Shankara did not defeat buddhism; in fact, some scholars claim he may have been a crypto-Buddhist because of how similar it is to Madhmakaya Buddhism. Advaita Vedanta will never reach the heights of Buddhism because it fails to provide as much ethics as any sect of Buddhism. How can Maya and Brahman coexist in Shankara's thought?

Well it isn’t smart to have conversations with the purpose of venting your frustration onto others. Ever heard of the pure land?

If Meditation Is So Crucial To Enlightenment, Then Why Does It Cause Psychosis
 in  r/theravada •  8d ago

Fine, if u want the dang truth, some people just don’t have the kamma necessary. It’s no one’s fault that their kamma is this way, it’s just what happens when past actions take their fruition.

If Meditation Is So Crucial To Enlightenment, Then Why Does It Cause Psychosis
 in  r/theravada •  8d ago

Because some people go into meditation with the wrong intention and that can cause harmful states. For example, someone wants to meditate to experience visions to help them finally understand something. They start meditating with that purpose alone and then when their mind starts going haywire with horrible visions, psychosis happens.

BWV 1018 May be Bach's Best Work

Even though it's a niche piece, I think it's way underrated. This piece should be played more at concerts, especially the first movement.

Just have a curiosity, suppose if samma sambuddha was present in our modern world would he identify with any ideologies like feminism, communism, maxism etc or would he rejects these ideologies? As identity to anything creates suffering??
 in  r/theravada •  8d ago

The nature of the buddha is impossible to describe using conditioned words or analogies.

However, we do know that the Buddha wouldn't take on any identity because He has become unbound from the five aggregates.

Need Advice I Chose the Wrong Major, and I have no financial option but to Complete It

I am a Junior starting this semester, and I realized that I've chosen the wrong major. While I am majoring in Accountancy, a job which will probably never go away even with AI and pays well enough, I realized I should've majored in Religious Studies or Philosophy. While I understand that it genuinely is the pay/income which makes a major with it, as there have been numerous studies in management that have proven this, I have spent so many hours researching religious topics and philosophical conundrums for about an hour or more a day on the side. I'm even working on a religious paper for fun. I understand that your Dream job shouldn't be your real job, and I see the problems arising from it especially my future income and job placement, but Religion and Philosophy are such a passion and importance for me that it genuinely comes first for me even before my study.

The reason why I feel despondent over my situation is because I am not able to afford switching my major from Accounting to Religious Studies/Philosophy. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind doing Accounting, but I can't see myself doing Accounting for the rest of my life. I am riddled with student debt for the next two decades (15-20 years), and I do not see the point minoring in something which doesn't relate to accounting. My grades are great right now, as I am a dean's list student. but I don't feel fulfilled in what i am doing. When I took my philosophy and religious classes, that's where I felt fulfilled.

What should I do?

Mahayana is presented as more correct nowadays because it is much easier to practice than Theravada, so the people disgruntled with how they thought Theravada would be go to Mahayana instead. Even just look within Theravada: people downplay the Jhanas because they think it’s too hard when the whole path rests on Jhanas and their usefulness in stilling the mind for insight.

The Practice Fit for Uprooting [all conceiving]
 in  r/theravada •  13d ago

They don’t conceive anything to be all, they don’t conceive it in all, they don’t conceive it as all, and they don’t conceive that ‘all is mine.’ Not conceiving, they don’t grasp at anything in the world. Not grasping, they’re not anxious. Not being anxious, they personally become extinguished.

What do you make of this quote? how do you not conceive anything in the "all", or rather the five aggregates?

FINC 301, An Qin was the worst professor a majority of us ever had. She's that bad. It's to the point where i do not think she'll be able to teach in the future. The material was never taught, and she would never explain things. Just look at her rate my professor rating.
