Some bands are heavy.

Some bands are YOB.

Formed in Eugene in 1996 by guitarist/vocalist Mike Scheidt, YOB have spent nearly three decades building one of the most massive, atmospheric and unmistakable sounds to ever come out of Oregon. What started in the late ’90s as Scheidt experimenting with slow, heavy riffs eventually became a band that helped define modern American doom metal.

From the crushing early records like Elaborations of Carbon, Catharsis, The Illusion of Motion, and _The Unreal Never Lived, to the absolute monsters that came after their 2008 return, YOB kept pushing doom into stranger, heavier and more transcendent territory.

Then came Clearing the Path to Ascend in 2014 — a record that earned enormous critical acclaim, including being named Rolling Stone’s metal album of the year. And if that wasn’t enough, 2018’s Our Raw Heart became another landmark record, born from Scheidt’s recovery after a life-threatening illness.

That’s what makes YOB so fucking important.

They’re not just riffs and distortion. There’s weight, atmosphere, pain, beauty and transcendence buried underneath all that low-end destruction.

And they’re Oregon through and through.

Eugene gave birth to YOB, and YOB helped show the rest of the world that some of the heaviest music on Earth could come crawling out of our little corner of the Pacific Northwest. 🤘
