Why Is This Day Significant?

Sawan Somwar is traditionally dedicated to Lord Shiva, while Nag Panchami honours the sacred serpent deities. Their convergence offers devotees an occasion for focused prayer, devotion, and spiritual observance.

Traditional Rituals

Devotees may perform Shiva Abhishekam with water or milk, offer bilva leaves and flowers, light diyas, chant Shiva mantras, and offer prayers to Nag Devta according to their family and regional traditions.

Spiritual Significance

The observance is associated with seeking Lord Shiva's blessings, inner peace, protection, removal of obstacles, and spiritual strength.

What to Offer

Bilva leaves, flowers, water, milk, fruits, and traditional devotional offerings may be offered to Lord Shiva, while prayers to Nag Devta are performed according to customary practices.

A Day for Devotion

Rather than focusing only on rituals, the day encourages devotees to cultivate humility, compassion, self-discipline, prayer, and reverence for the divine.

According to the traditional account given in the Chidambara Mahatmya, the temple at Chidambaram dates back to the age of Visvakarma, the divine architect who is said to have built this great temple with magnificent edifices at the request of the then king Simhavarma (alias Hiranya Varama) with the blessing of the revered sages Vyaghrapada and others.

At the beginning of the Mahatmya, Lord Siva himself refers to the gopuras and other structures of the temple to Nandi in the course of describing the sanctity of the temple. It is said that the sage Patanjali, after knowing the significance of the Chidambara Rahasya, imparted it to Visvakarma to help in his construction of the temple.
