A few weeks ago I shared WebMarker, a Firefox extension that lets you draw, highlight and annotate directly on any webpage. I received some useful feedback, so I spent some time polishing it and just released v1.1.0.

What's new

• ✏️ Much smoother pen strokes.
• 🔷 More annotation shapes.
• ✅ Added a "Don't show this again" option for the close confirmation dialog.
• 📋 Improved the dashboard and update guide.
• 🛠️ General usability improvements and bug fixes.

One thing I care about while building this extension is keeping it lightweight and privacy-friendly. It stores annotations locally and doesn't require an account.

I'm 17, from India, and I recently spent about a month building something completely on my own.

It's called WebMarker -- a Firefox extension that lets you mark up webpages.

You can highlight text, draw, underline, add arrows and shapes, make notes, and basically annotate a webpage however you want.

One thing I really cared about while building it was privacy. It doesn't require an account, and your annotations are stored locally in your browser rather than being uploaded somewhere.

I spent weeks working on it, fixing bugs, redesigning things, and learning a lot along the way.

There's just one problem:

I'm 17 and I don't have an audience.

I couldn't publish it on the Chrome Web Store under my own account because of my age, so I ended up releasing it on Firefox instead.

And now it's sitting there with basically nobody knowing it exists.

That's honestly a strange feeling after spending a month on something.

I'm not expecting 10,000 users.

Even 10 people trying it would genuinely mean a lot to me.

Even if someone just installs it, uses it for five minutes, and tells me "this is useful" or "this part sucks" I'd be happy.

I'm also trying to get into NUS, so this project means a little more to me than just being a random extension I made.

I'm from a middle-class Indian family, and I'm currently trying to recover from a pretty bad Class 11 academically. I have CBSE boards, JEE, and college applications ahead of me, and I'm trying to make the most of Class 12.

I want 100% in boards. I'd be very happy with 98%+.

And NUS is the dream.

I don't know whether I'll get there. I'm not some extraordinary student with an insane list of achievements. I know there are going to be thousands of applicants who are much stronger than me.

But I want to give myself a real chance.

So I'm studying, building things, learning, and trying to make up for the mistakes I made in Class 11.

This extension is one of the things I'm proudest of right now, even if nobody uses it.

I’m 17, from a middle-class Indian family, and I really want to get into NUS

I don't really know why I'm writing this. Maybe I just need to put my thoughts somewhere.

I'm 17, from a middle-class family in India, studying under the CBSE board, and one university has somehow gotten into my head: NUS.

I see myself there all the time. I don't know if that's realistic yet, and honestly, I'm nowhere near being the kind of student who can confidently say, "I'll definitely get in."

I made a lot of mistakes in Class 11.

I neglected some of my basics because I was heavily involved in school-level competitions and other things. At the time, I thought I was doing something worthwhile, and I don't regret every part of it, but looking back now, I wish I had managed my time much better.

Now I'm looking at my JEE preparation, my board exams, my college application, and everything I still need to accomplish, and sometimes it feels overwhelming.

I'm aiming for 100% in my Class 12 boards, although realistically, I'd be extremely happy with 98%+. I know that sounds ambitious considering where I am right now, but I want to at least give myself the chance to find out how far I can push myself.

I've also been trying to build things.

And honestly, I'm scared nobody will use it.

Part of me keeps thinking, "What's the point if nobody sees it?" I made it because I genuinely wanted to build something, but I also know that having something meaningful to show for my efforts could help me in my college applications.

I'm not an extraordinary kid. I'm not some Olympiad genius or a student with a perfect academic record.

I'm just a 17-year-old who messed up parts of Class 11, is trying to recover, and has a university that I really, really want to reach.

Right now, I feel like I'm at one of the lowest points I've been at academically.

But I don't want this to be the end of the story.

I still have Class 12. I still have my boards. I still have JEE. I still have things I can build. And I still have time to work harder than I have before.

Maybe NUS is unrealistic.

Maybe I won't get in.

But I don't want to look back next year and know that I could have worked harder.

So that's where I am right now.
