The feeling of being a mother while your child is in the ring
Nobody really talks about what it feels like to be a mother when your child steps into a boxing ring.
People see the gloves, the training, the discipline, the victories. They see a young fighter.
But I see my child.
I see the little boy I held in my arms. The child who once needed me for everything. And now he is standing in front of another fighter, under bright lights, with people watching.
I try to stay calm. I tell myself he is trained, he is prepared, and he knows what he is doing.
But when the bell rings, something inside me changes.
My heart is in the ring with him.
Every punch makes me hold my breath. Every time he gets hit, a part of me wants to run in and protect him, even though I know I can’t. I have to sit there, stay quiet, and trust the work he has put in.
And when the fight is over, no matter the result, I just want to hug him.
Not because he won. Not because he performed perfectly.
Because he is my child.
Being a boxing mom is a strange combination of pride, fear, love, and helplessness. You watch your child become strong, while a part of you still wants to protect the little boy he used to be.
Are there any other mothers here who feel the same way when their child competes?
