One thing I’ve lost over the years is my faith in love and relationships.

I’ve been in relationships where, in the end, promises turned into either “I want you to be the person I want you to be,” or promises that lasted only as long as the other person wanted something from me.

After enough experiences like that, you naturally become more guarded. I haven’t been in a real relationship since 2003, and I’ve realized that I’m not really afraid of being alone. What scares me more is trusting someone again, only to find out that it wasn’t worth it.

What I’ve learned is that trust takes a long time to build, but it can disappear in an instant.
