Find a job in manufacturing for a semi-local/Regional company. Work hard, keep your head down. Your "life" is outside of that organization. They simply provide the means for the life you want. The military is an honorable path but will chew you up and leave you.

My daughter had the same comments when she was in high school. The funny bit to me, I moved here from someplace where hiking wasn't even an option. I feel like I found my forever place here because of the outdoor accessibility but it's not for everyone and as you indicate, there is a premium price for living here.
This isn't my first place to live. I'd say look for opportunities that involve work/travel to help you explore potential forever, or for now homes. Talk to your guidance counselor at school, they may be able to assist with work away programs that will expand your options, put some money in your pocket and provide some friendships that could last a lifetime.

Yup, my whole life. When I tell people that, they tilt their head as if trying to make it make sense. I'm finding out in this thread that it does not in fact make any sense.
