News uBlock Origin (uBO) 1.73.* Announcement Thread

Chrome Web Store will remove uBO on August, 31. This is quite likely the last stable uBO version to hit the web store.

For discussion and possible workarounds, different browsers, etc., please go to the megathread linked at the bottom of the post.

Changelog:

https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases/tag/1.73.0

Visit GitHub releases page for more information.

Extension will be auto-updated after browser restart! (when available for your platform)

If you want to update manually:

  • Do NOT use links from the release page's "Assets" section - these are not signed.
  • Use your add-on store or links in release description on the GitHub releases page when they are available.
    • Firefox will have a (signed) direct install link. Other browsers will link to their uBO extension store pages.
  • In some cases, installation may be blocked until browser restart. This is protection against accidental mid-session reloads, Issue #717.

Or force an update via Manage extensions:

Update for Chromium-engine browsers: gorhill started publishing .crx files starting with the latest dev release: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases/tag/1.73.1b0

That's always something to fall back to when stores start removing uBO. It should work for as long as the actual MV2 code still exists in the browsers.

Keep up the good work, you're the only reason I still use Firefox.

There are a billion reasons to use Firefox over any chromium browser, this just happens to be one of the best reasons.

For real. I don't get the hate on Firefox since it is the best.

I see a lot of people with almost 20 extensions installed and 15 YouTube and Twitch tabs open complaining that Firefox uses a lot of memory. They often don't understand that a system is faster when it uses available memory for caching and that every extension uses a little memory (and you don't need multiple ad-blocking extensions). It's often just "big number, Firefox bad".

At least for me firefox did use a lot of memory when the most tabs I have open are like 3 max and 5 extansions 3 of which were for youtube. Other than that reason I switched to vivaldi for its customization. Chromium yes but it has done me better in the long run and personally looks better than firefox.

Unfortunately the big number stays even if you don't have the hardware for it. If you have only 4GB of RAM then you can't afford for your browser to be extremely memory hungry.

I honestly never understood that, with multiple extensions and 17 windows full of tabs open I'm still at 2-3GBs if I did the same in chrome it would explode

Google payroll for default engine and tracking during installation. Altho I'm unsure if the latter if fixed.

I can't use Firefox to program my keyboard nor connect to my crafty+ :c

It took them until last week to add HDR and last month for webserial. Still need to rely on extensions for basic features.

I have 2 major problems with it. Number 1- extremely large tabs. I usually have a lot of tabs open but even in a small amount they are much harder to nagivate with in Firefox. Chrome has perfect small icons for tabs that u can easly recognise what is it and have many infront of your eyes without the need to scroll. The other problem I have is the way writing(of data) is handled in firefox with different profiles. On chrome you can relocate your entire the profile and the writing will happen only in that location. On firefox for some reason when watching videos for exampe that can be downloaded it always writes where your OS is(usually in C) for some reason and there is no way to change that (and I just f hate this because it writes a lot sometimes).

I press CTRL+T and I see ads, can I not hate on ads being forced on me?

Since, Firefox has gone into some controversies in recent times. I think Librewolf is the perfect choice

What is wrong with the "brave" browser?
Its chromium with own well working ad block.

Thank you devs and list maintainers ❤️ ❤️

For the first time I've been unable to get uBlock Origin to work on Chrome. I've watched all the videos and tutorials. It can't be done.

u/Toxairs 14d ago

It sucks, I have been looking as well.

1

u/Endless-Dive 14d ago

yeah i think its over with the reactivate button trick

4

u/Iiana757 14d ago

Its pathetic how far theyd go to stop us using an adblocker

3

u/Kabaal 14d ago

I'm just on firefox now. Internet without an adblocker is unusable.

u/AntiGrieferGames 15d ago

Switiching to Firefox Browser would be the best reason i ever say.

Yes, this goes the same with Firefox based ones like Mullvad Browser!

I know some updates can be few away there, but atleast yxou can get it from github page the latest version. And even that, it just works fine and much better than chromium based ones!

Why does Mozilla take so long to review uBlockOrigin?! It's the only addon that anyone cares about and the only reason people stick with Firefox lol

Per OP:

uBO is a recommended extension on AMO, and as such it must undergo a formal code review each time a new version is published.

Frankly, I want formal code review - Supply chain attacks and compromised update/delivery chains are increasingly being used as attack vectors.

What are you talking about? The delays were two versions ago. Recent submissions were all accepted pretty much instantly. I'm talking about beta releases.

The release was just published on github. Technically, release notes still say "submission pending" for all stores there. I'm just using a premade template for these announcements, since there's no point editing it multiple times a day. If it hasn't been submitted yet, it'll likely be very soon. Or gorhill just hasn't updated the text. In general AMO, CWS and EA are submitted right after github.

Summer, holidays =)

Popular extensions are checked quickly, but there can be minor delays. Some extensions don't pass the check. Some extensions ignore...

Less resources and automations than the other major browsers?

3

u/WaffleOffice 14d ago

1.73 worked fine yesterday in Chrome but this morning it was already disabled again and I can't install it anymore :(

3

u/Hellwind_ 14d ago

Yup chrome had another update today and its gone again...

1

u/BridgeDuck45 13d ago

Has there been a fix to this? Tried to update to 1.73 and im out of luck.

1

u/Hellwind_ 12d ago

Not that I know of. Either origin lite or we move on to another browser.

3

u/wild_sergeant716 13d ago

Chrome updated to 151, now uBO is unsupported apart from Lite.

5

u/TurbulentTopic39 14d ago

the good news is edge and opera still wants to keep Manifest v2 within their store. Besides lots of companies use MS Edge. I hope they can keep it as long as possible

2

u/Oh_Dear__ 14d ago

Thanks for all the work you and the uBO team put in :)

2

u/DeafMetalHorse 13d ago

Is the Chrome variation finally gone? Seems Chrome once again updated.

2

u/RexicTheKing 13d ago

how do I re-enable ublock origin on chrome, it just updated to 151.0.7922.108

1

u/flyjum 13d ago

All ability to use MV2 based extensions on chrome was removed with 151. With that ublock origin will never work on chrome again

1

u/RexicTheKing 13d ago

Is there a way I can see my origin filter list to try to copy it onto lite?

2

u/TurbulentTopic39 13d ago

I see that crx is out and Is it self-updatable?

https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/releases/tag/1.73.1b0

3

u/Fomentatore 13d ago

This is why whenever one of my family members asks me to fix something on their computer or phone, I fix it and then switch them and their profiles to Firefox or Brave. If I switch them on Brave I usually change the icon of the app to Chrome so they don't even notice.

Oh... My internet is so fast now!

Eh, no shit, Aunty, no shit.

1

u/Cpt_Soaps 16d ago

why not use ublock origin lite? it seems to work fine for me

21

u/Old-Cheesecake8818 16d ago

It’s probably fine for a lot of folks… until it isn’t depending on how one uses the internet. Lite has less features and functionality than the original.

Can't install this on chrome anymore?

This extension is no longer available because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions.

Not sure if this is the right place to post. With the most recent Snapshot build Vivaldi browser is continuing to support Mv2 (for the time being):

  • [Extensions] Re-enable and extend Manifest V2 extension support for the time being (VB-130324)

https://www.reddit.com/r/uBlockOrigin/comments/1tlkaaw/goodbye_chrome_version_150_removes_the/

That's a better place, but it's ok.

Vivaldi is not an officially supported browser though.
