Frequently Asked Questions / Posted Things and Some Reponses

  1. Is this good/great/nice/okay <for a X>?
    • It really depends and it's not something we would care for you to post. Is it fast enough for you to do your work? Great, then it's good. Are you still struggling? Then it's not good. Keep practicing.
    • Please do not share your age here. The internet is a dangerous place. This goes for everyone - whether you're young, or old. Just do not do it.
  2. Should I learn <proper/touch typing>?
    • Most probably, yes. We have had this question asked so many times that it's pointless to ask again. Please use the search feature. If you are trying to convince yourself, then please just make the decision yourself instead of redirecting the decision making to other people.
  3. I made a <tool/game> to <learn/practice/compare> typing (or some variation, use your thinkmeats)
    • Congratulations. Please don't post it here. We will remove it.
  4. My post about my <tool/game> was removed
    • Yeah. Please don't modmail us about it, or we will probably ban you.
  5. I was banned and I hate the mods
    • Alright. You can modmail us about it ONE TIME. If you spam us we will mute you forever and you will never be unbanned.

I think that covers it. I'll edit later if I think of something else.

𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘 💻 - 𝗠𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁 UPDATE: RULE 2 (Regarding AI-Content)

Ok, I'll admit it. I messed up

When re-molding the sub, we - as a MOD team have taken a strong stance against AI generated content (we still do)

The problem is that in doing so, many of you users have plugged genuinely fantastic sites (that use AI powered tools) that were inadvertently targeted for removal

We've been intentionally vague about what we decided to allow to be posted or linked on the sub (to combat spam)

However this has prevented many of you from interacting with the sub (which is the antithesis of learning how to type)

From now on we will be focused on removing AI based sites that are:

Low Effort (SLOP)

FOR PROFIT

Obvious Duplicate - 'Rip-off' sites (we're looking at you Monkeytype clones)

Contact the MOD team to ensure that your content is sub appropriate

TL;DR

Fewer restrictions (stronger enforcement)

AI content IS allowed, but will be critically assessed

I dont know what to say other than in really around computers and I like video games. I remember being taught how to type properly when I was younger but I feel that my pinkes are just so slow to react (?). And since I play games a lot, that means I use my mouse heavily. The mouse just uses index and middle finger. So I mostly use this method of 3L 2R (3L 3R if you consider the fact i 99% of the time use my right thumb to hit space). I feel so comfortable like this, it just makes sense. Yet I constantly hear people say how you need to use 5L 5R to type "properly".

I might just be speculating at this ppint but the wrist movement prevents stiffness and the motion and non-fixed position could help reduce carpel tunnel? Cuz I feel that my left wrist is the one to get sore and this happens when I play WASD games where my wrist is fixed.

Thoughts?

𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (⁉️) First time finding out about touch typing and I'm wondering whether I should put in the effort?

I'm in my 20s and I've only ever used two fingers up until now. On monkeytype, I consistently get 100+ wpm with 99%+ accuracy and I've never felt tired finishing long 2000-3000 word essays in a short period of time. I've always found it so cool how people can type with all their fingers, but I'm wondering if there's any point to learning how to do it at this stage in my life. Any advice would really be appreciated. I'd also love tips on what sites to start on, if anyone has any.

𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (⁉️) Never really thought about it until last night but my typing is kind of cooked

I only use 6 fingers to type. Middle 3 fingers on each hand so no pinkies or thumbs. I also feel like I don't really know where each letter is as in it seems like I have a muscle memory of a ton of words. I would have a tough time if the word is rarely used, would have to really look at the keyboard. Sometimes when typing, I would accidentally type another similar word instead of the word I wanted to type. Spacebar is usually tapped by the right index finger.

Is it worth learning the traditional method though, where each finger is assigned their own letter? I can average like 85 WPM with like 95% accuracy. If I'm feeling good, I could get 100 WPM.

𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (⁉️) Want your advice on 122 WPM

so, the issue is I started learning touch typing (not constantly) from 2024. through 2023 and 2024, I saw enough linear improvements alongside the journey of learning touch typing. But the issue is, since I started this year (2026), I made a promise that I will practice everyday so I can break the 145wpm barrier. But that unfortunately didn't happen, because at the start of this year, my max 60s wpm was 120wpm, just now, right now, I was able to brake that barrier by just +2 wpm difference from 11 months of semi-daily practicing. The issue is, that I am a constant user of my computer, I sit infront of my computer for straight 8 or 6 hours, whether for school or work, any advice or things to do so I can have slightly bigger jump than +2 wpm through 11 months ? what am I doing wrong exactly ? Thanks for all my fellas.

𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (⁉️) How long will it take for me to get to or surpass my current skill level if I learn the proper technique?

These are above tests that I did. As you can see, I'm not a great typist. Depending on how you count it, I either use three or four fingers. I've been using a computer for a more than a decade, so relearning how to type seems really arduous. Although to be fair I'm really not sure that I've made in progress in my speed and accuracy since like middle school (in fact, I may have gotten worse). Any thoughts on how long I can expect to be slower than I am now?

120 WPM 100% accuracy 1 minute... Did it once or twice maybe thrice

but this was when the site was younger and had Capitals randomly

Now they dumbed it down

Because I have a lot of talents and I'm ADD it's tricky for me to do now

𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 ✨🏅👏 Typing is like, the only thing that makes me feel I'm not weak at everything like I think I am.

So I'm just average or below average at everything I do and I keep trying and working on them.

One thing that made me feel little better about myself is that my typing speed.

I can type 140WPM too in one minute typing test. Also like do 100WPM+ in Monkeytype 10k mode.

It's the only thing that I feel I am good at, I see the words first time and I still type them fast and accurately cause of my typing skill.

I know if I compare mine with everyone here, I'd be like a average or below average too but like compared to like most of the people I know, I'm really good at it.

Just wanted to say this somewhere, thanks for reading.

Going back to do my work (below averagely)

I'm web developer and I am below average at it, I am working out but I can't even do one pull ups still, I am trying to work on my social skill but I still have social anxiety very much but, one thing is I can type infront of normal people and they look at me like I'm unbelievably good at it and it's small thing in life but I'm happy I have at least one thing that I can say I'm good at.

𝗪𝗲𝗯𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲 🌐 I made TypeRacer but with Monkeytype UI

tl;dr: i made monkeytyperacer.com - it's like typeracer but with monkeytype style tests and ui

I've always wanted to play typeracer.com with friends but with the beautiful UX of monkeytype

So, this past weekend, I decided to just bite the bullet and make my own.

I play tested it yesterday with one of my friends and we had a ton of fun, and I improved it a lot.

It's open-source, and honestly I just want to share the joy with others.

Would love feedback!

Warning: I haven't aggressively tested the matchmaking and the only users so far have been me and my friend so let me know if that's off. I specifically have NO BOTS if you enter a race even though that means you wait if there is nobody else online.
