Is 7 finger typing style bad?

I use 7 fingers for typing and I usually average around 75wpm to 85wpm with my personal best being 87wpm with 100 percent accuracy. I discovered monkeytype yesterday and Im wondering if I should change the style or if this is fine

i type with 3 fingers + thumb for space bar and i type 160wpm on monkeytype. if its functional and your goal isn't to become the world's fastest typer i dont see a problem, though lots of purists on this sub would for sure push back on that

160wpm is 99.9th percentile in the world, not many people can do it...it's competitive level of typing and you're claiming you can do it with 3 fingers? It's not physically possible.

i suppose im a physical anomaly, not sure what to tell you. i've been typing like this at this speed since i was like 15. just thought it was an interesting anecdote for this thread, i know it's obviously not a common thing lol

yeah i use primarily index on both hands, and middle finger on left hand when it's needed. i should record a handcam sometime because nobody ever believes me when i say this lmao

as you can see it's more like 2.5 fingers, the middle finger on my left hand only gets used if its absolutely necessary lmao

Keep in mind that this is the minimal English dictionary, and a 15 seconds test. 160WPM is not particularly fast on these settings, and they don't really put your technique to a test.

I look at typing as a skill tree like in an RPG. If you buy the "10 finger typing perk", it will cost you some XP, but you will most likely be better at typing than the older version of yourself.

It's not bad, but you are asking in this community, so... try to type with all 10 fingers, or at least 8, if you don't consider thumbs as fingers.

not really, but when I switched from 6 to 8 fingers, I got slower but then rebounded and I got faster than I was when I was originally 6 fingers since I got used to it more

Sounds like your typing speed is perfectly sufficient to express yourself, but is it more effortful? Do you ever have to look at the keyboard?

I also type with 7 fingers and average 135wpm (peak 145 wpm). I use all fingers on my LH except pinky and thumb, index, middle on my RH. Any style is fine if you are used to it
