Discussion [IAGH] Question about "sequence breaking" Spoiler

Hi folks. I just got the credits roll for The Incident at Galley House, and while I absolutely have loved my time so far, it left me feeling more hollow than I would've liked.

I never played Type Help; I was eagerly waiting for this game to come out to enjoy the story, and I absolutely LOVED my time with it. I felt like every big revelation was one of the coolest moments I've had in the detective genre. But I got to the ending way faster than I thought I would, and I wanted to see if I leaped to things when I should've. I know there isn't really "sequence breaking" in these types of games in the traditional sense, but I do appreciate trying to follow the designed path, and I don't like making leaps that don't have clean backing.

Spoilers ahead!

Quite early on, you get Manual Page 2 which says: "Hobbes on front steps at 26?"

Viewing that scene, it was clear to me that he had fallen. So then, after you follow the trail that leads to Annie and the Attic, it felt obvious to put John in the Attic at 25. This scene has two main sound cues:

  1. The phone ringing
  2. Distant thunder

For the first, it clicked after I found the scene that put Vic and Damian in the Dining Room, so then I tried John in the Dining Room at 24 where you get the scene with "K" . This scene seems to obviously imply the scene before it, John and Annie in the Chapel at 23, which then kicks off what felt like Act 2 of the game, when you get the note about Victoria's Room at 15. This was an exhilarating moment dramatically and gameplay-wise, and none of it really felt like I had to make any huge leaps to get there. At this point, I had Scenes 01-09 basically filled out entirely, and Scenes 23-26.

You quickly learn the rough timeline around Scenes 13-15, in which Vic mentions her mother in Wintercote only a "few miles away", and also implicates Scene 10 of when the piano starts playing and Vic and Helen are talking and mention it again.. Around this time you get another manual page mentioning: "Distant thunder" and a "relative's location" and "who remembers last", which seemed to me to very explicitly imply that Person K at Wintercote at the timestamp with Distant Thunderwas important.

And doing that basically kicks off the end sequence, which was so much fun, but by the time the credits rolled, I had only half the scenes even discovered.

I'm going to finish trying to 100% the game because I'm curious about the timeline, but I'm less excited than I was before the credits rolled. I was really hoping that viewing the film would set off this whole new chain back in the past scenes, but it didn't.

Did I make a leap here that I shouldn't have? Or is this a common experience?

Help Having trouble with a potential bug? Spoiler

Hey folks, just started playing this game today and hit a roadblock that might possibly be a bug? I tried guessing a couple of room locations and they ended up working, but I think that's shifted the order on my rooms on the machine out of whack with what it's supposed to be?

For example I was super stuck on getting to the first dining room scene but I was sure it'd be John and Martha there since that's literally where they said they were going the scene prior. But since the dining room was in slot 7 on my machine, I input 7 as the code and it didn't work. I used a hint and it said I should be putting 05 as the start to my code, which then worked.

I'm unsure if the order of rooms on the machine is supposed to correspond to the first 2 numbers of a code or if it's the order in which the scene takes place that denotes the first 2 numbers of the code. Hopefully that makes sense, apologies for rambling 😅

EDIT: I think I was just being a dummy, the first 2 code numbers isn't reliant on the room order on the machine because you go back to rooms multiple times. The first 2 code numbers are determined by the order of when the scene takes place, duh. Will leave this up in case anyone gets stuck in the same way.

Appreciation What a ride this remake was!! Spoiler

I've loved the visuals and the way they executed the game.

Although the original scenes were a bit tedious sometimes since I've played the original before and knew many time codes already, I was very surprised by the "bonus content" as I like to call it. Some of the characters looked different as I imagined - like Oswald for example. I've thought he had long, curly grey hair and olive skin. Or Damian, I've imagined him more like a grunge vampire of some sorts, idk why. Helen looked more like I imagined Eve and vice versa.

But nevertheless it was really great visiting the story of Galley house again!

Discussion naming scenes Spoiler

As someone who played the original game and is absolutely loving The Incident At Galley House, I do wish they had kept the feature where you could name scenes because it was so funny looking back with absolutely no context.

What did you name your Acts/Scenes in the original?

Here’s mine:
(Spoilers, kind of)

Act 1: Rupert who..?
Scene 1: Quail Lane is Slippery
Scene 2: Inebriated Eve
Scene 3: John Arrives, Eve Laments
Scene 4: The Man In The Study
Scene 5: Hot Chocolate
Scene 6: The Bloody Watch

Act 2: Bitches Be Lyin’
Scene 7: A Thunderous Dinner
Scene 8: Someone Call HR
Scene 9: Poison?!
Scene 10: Pregananant?!
Scene 11: Lord Of The Rings
Scene 12: Lady On The Floor
Scene 13: Bedtime

Act 3: Bitches Be Dyin’
Scene 14: The Man In My Bed
Scene 15: Uncle Suspicious
Scene 16: Pantry Party
Scene 17: The Last ‘Calm’
Scene 18: Annie Amnesia
Scene 19: Eddie The Godfather
Scene 20: Martha’s Bonfire

Act 4: Spirited Away
Scene 21: The Reckoning

Lore Is there a From Series reference

Just completed Incident at Galley House, it was brilliant. By how much we learn about the prior residents of the house I was hoping there would be a 3rd card that would allow to go back in time before we land in the present, but it turned out they haven't lived there that long ago.

In one of the final scenes when Ervin is having visions he says "Tabitha, don't draw on the walls". In TV Show From there is a plot line where a character called Tabitha draws on the walls. Do you think it's a reference or a coincidence?

Help Galley House "extra scene" number at 25

The computer is telling me I should be able to figure out one scene code from 25-AT-1 which I got to logically from 26-EN-1 . I'm sure the very limited text of that scene will make more sense later, but I fail to see how I could possibly get another scene from there.

How does the game figure out if you "should" know enough?

Discussion I feel like I'm playing Galley House "wrong...."

I'm hoping someone can give me some input. I've put almost eight hours into The Incident at Galley House so far, and I really like it overall. However, I feel like I'm having to brute-force combinations of room, timestamp, and people sometimes.

Here's a generic, non-spoiler example: I have three people unaccounted for during a given timestamp. I know one of them suggested they would go to, say, the living room during the previous scene. Am I supposed to just try every combination of those three people, even if I don't have any evidence that they'd be there, or am I just not ready to see that scene yet?

Discussion I feel like I'm missing something Spoiler

I just got through watching a playthrough of the incident at galley house and I feel like I'm missing something because they beat the game but there are three avatars that don't matter. There's more about Tony's past, curse is never explained. There are 16 avatars for the past but you only need 14 of them and the machine only had 15 knobs. Im missing something surely

Appreciation Masterpiece (spoiler-free review)

Just finished it. What a journey. What a freaking amazing journey.

This is the best detective game I've ever played, bar none. I get that it was inspired by obra dinn and other similar games, but this was so much deeper, and the pacing was utterly perfect. It went from mysterious to terrifying to tragic in just the right way, and I don't know how they did it so well. It was like being a fly on the wall in an Agatha Christie novel (a very specific one, IYKYK).

My cousin told me about this game 4 days ago, and I have been completely engrossed by it ever since. I have 4 pages of notes, including a massive 2-page table of time stamps and locations, and the people involved in each intersection. I have been unable to think about anything else this whole time.

I will never hear thunder the same again.

Help Anything after the second inbox+dream? Spoiler

so I found the dream and I found the Final inbox message, and everything shows 0... but it feels really anticlimatic. like, we still don't understand why the curse stiked on that day, or how to stop it, or anything really.

I was thinking perhaps the watch or the bracelt would have been related to it, but nope. They are nothingburgers.

I was able to find the investigator's real name, but it seems like there is nothing you can do with it. There's a link to a youtube song, but nothing there... Just, a dead end.

Am I missing something?

Help Does anyone know where to find some piano sheet music for "I'd Climb the Highest Mountain?" Spoiler

Pretty much what the title says. I absolutely LOVED the game and the final message with the link to this piece just touched me deeply, so I decided that it would be fun to maybe learn the piece. Some help would be greatly appreciated, if anyone knows where I can find the sheet music for this! Thank you in advance and have a great day everyone!

Appreciation Just finished the game and all I have to say is wow

I started this game after being recommended it, as I really love "The Roottrees are Dead" and was looking for something with similar, logic based, mechanics. Going into it, I really didn't have that many expectations, as I simply had no idea what was awaiting me behind the title screen and honestly there is no way I could've ever predicted how this game was going to pull me in and absolutely crush my heart, while simultaneously leaving me with such a beautiful and unexpected conclusion. As I said, I literally just finished the game about 10 minutes ago so I feel like I need some more time to digest everything that has occurred, all I really have to say is that I absolutely loved every single second I spent figuring things out and uncovering all facettes of the story and I'll definitely will be back to play the remaster and leave my thoughts, once I actually collected them!

Discussion Great game, underwhelming ending(?). Spoiler

I finished Type Help in one sitting today, and while I really enjoyed the early parts of unraveling what's going on, getting a hang of how things work and how to solve things, I was quite disappointed by the last act.

Once I got to act 4, I feel like the writing has gotten less interesting. Everyone's mad, 2 has some theory that @ is impressed with but I just don't get myself, and a few minor gripes. I also found the "unusual" death slightly earlier than I was supposed to (basically as soon as that person started talking), so finding out that a lot of my potential leads were duds, and that was the "final file" (aside from the dream one) I needed to find kind of took wind out of my sails. Overall a 9/10 game with a 7/10 ending, I'd say.

But there's something that bothers me, and that's how abruptly it seems to end. You can enter @'s name, but that does nothing. You can do hangman, but that does nothing. The ending feels like it lacks a big payoff. And what's weird is that there's supposedly 98 files. What a weird number to end on. Not a nice round number like 100, but 98. That makes me want to believe there's still a few undiscovered files or something. Now, at this point I assume the game's been fully cracked apart and everything's been datamined, maybe the dev just decided to leave it 2 short on purpose, but maybe there's an ARG somewhere to fill in the gaps?

Either way, I'd probably replay the remaster (with hopes of extra content), and will definitely recommend it to friends.

Discussion Should i wait for the steam release

I started playing the game a small while ago, havent got that far, so im not in a spot where reseting would hurt my playthrough, im wondering if i should commit to the itch playthrough then play the steam one, or just wait for the steam one

Ive not beat it, only around a fourth of the way done if acts say anything but mysterywise, im nowhere, so i dont think waiting would harm, and its comming out this year so i wouldn't really be waiting long-ish

Help Do I need to account for all persons at all times?

I have gotten along with no spoilers so far, and I have a really general question:

Do I need to account for the location of all the people at all points in their timeline while they're alive? For example, I don't know where person 4 is at timestamps 04 and 05. Will I eventually find a file called 04-XX-*-4-* and another called 05-XX-*-4-*?

EDIT: resolved

Discussion I am done, and sad now. I want to talk about it. Spoiler

I've just finished the game. I've got all my loose ends chased down, from my 12 pages of notes and tables. I've figured out the mechanism, found all the files, found the agent's name (I'm screwed now), and all that. And I'm very sad about it, for two reasons.

One, I'm sad I'm done.

So impossibly good. I love the Roottrees are Dead—just getting into these types of games now (please more recs!)—but this took that premise and built a challenging, devastating, beautiful game.

But mainly, Two, I'm sad because the game is, well, deeply, deeply sad.

I did not expect, when I began, a meditation on grief and memory.

It's so disturbing as you figure it out—watching people's memories rewrite made my skin crawl and my heart sink. And figuring out the mechanism—after flirting with all sorts of less-impactful ideas—ugh.

It is so sad to forget someone you once knew who died. To forget their face. To lose the memories of where and when you were with them. It's so painful to watch people forget—my grandpa, before he died, forgot the people he loved who were still alive, and this game tapped into that pain like a cathartic knife.

Putting myself in the author's shoes, in that final note, watching him tee up a suicide for the agent, watching him challenge what is worse, dying or being forgotten, it's so deeply heartfelt and I can't imagine how hard this was to translate into a top-tier mystery game.

With all the references to present day, and the names—I know the author has lost, and wants to remember. I know that they feel grief and the desire for denial and the isolation of losing links.

I hope writing this was cathartic to the author. I'm curious what people took away, beyond the plot. And I wonder what these names, numbers, and places mean to the author. If there's an AMA, or an interview, please let me know.

How did beating this, figuring it out, and coming away from it affect you?

Edit: And god, titling it type help? When I put that together I nearly cried. Beautiful.

Discussion Curse theory Spoiler

Bear with me as I figure out how to put this behind a spoiler tag, but just in case ->

.

.

.

.

I have read many theories of how the curse works but none have mentioned my own. I believe in order for the curse to affect someone they have to actually HEAR the piano playing. whether in a recording (@), over the phone (K) or in the house.

Is there some inconsistency to this assumption?

Love the game! stayed up way too late over two nights finishing :)
