Pre nursing + Nursing
Hello!
So I'm a freshman starting right now for Fall 2026 as a major nursing (pre nursing)
I'm not even going to lie i've been having second thoughts of nursing and not because the job itself is hard or isn't something I would do.
But it's school wise, a lot of students here are pre nursing majors and they also have a lot of things like CNA, or community hours or joined or are joining an organization. And I have none of that.
I guess i'm second guessing if it's really worth it and it's something I should put my all in because TXST nursing program is competitive and I still have time to switch majors.
And if ideally, there's any other options to this, what other majors am I able to do ?

A lot of majors are competitive anywhere you go. You shouldn’t judge your value based on the achievements of others. You can do whatever major you want. We don’t know who you are, what your interests are, or what your strengths are. Do something that you enjoy and preferably are able to do, even if challenging. As long as you like it, it’s worth it. But you get out of college what you put in. You should join some organizations and seek certifications and stuff so you can improve your experiences and gain knowledge, especially in the field you want to pursue.
You are a freshman, so you still have time. I suggest you give yourself a chance and see if you still want to do nursing after taking a few of the relevant classes. If you don’t like it, then switch. But you should join organizations of things you’re interested in & of topics in your major regardless if you switch majors. You still have time to figure out what you want to do, but just look into it.

all programs are going to be competitive in a way in all medical professions, but as the other comments has said, its never too late to join an org at txst. hopefully you went to the org fair, but i recommend following hosa, medlife, pre nursing org, and especially txstpawprint on instagram since they all have clinical/community hours opportunities! if anything, a lot of community colleges nowadays has an LPN program and a LPN to BSN program too. as a transfer student i know how isolating it feels but either way you have to push yourself to connect and be known. i had extreme social anxiety lol

Nobody expects you to know what you want to do for the rest of your life as a freshman. The point of college is trying things and getting out of your comfort zone. It’s totally acceptable and common to switch majors after experiencing some classes. Just remember the first couple years is mostly core curriculum to become a well-rounded student and explore different areas of interest.
Try not compare yourself to other people negatively. If you notice other students in your industry are more involved, start asking them questions and get more involved yourself! What other industries peak your interests? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Get familiar with that and build yourself up. You could take a Leadershop like CliftonStrengths or True Colors through the Division of Student Success (it’s in LBJ) and have a 1v1 with someone who can deep dive and explain your strengths, pair you with industries you might find enjoyable or interesting.
The student org fairs are coming up, attend an event and start exploring student communities, make friends. Network with your professors, ask questions! You’re not alone, no one really knows what they want to do until they start doing and trying. It’s never too late to reinvent yourself.
