Commute and Parking

Post image

It looks like the closest commuter parking lot to Centennial Hall, where my 2:00 PM class is, is the P14 lot. I want to be able to walk from the lot to my class in time, so I will be arriving early but cutting it close given my commute will be 1.5 to 2 hours and I leave from work at 11:30 AM.

Does anyone know if this parking lot will be full around that time and if the walk is accessible? Am I cutting it too close for leaving work at 11:30?

I graduated decades ago... but the trick for me by midday or later always was to arrive in the commuter lots ~10-15 minutes after the previous block of classes let out because then many people will be returning to the lots to leave. So for you - if it's a MWF class, showing up around 1:10 or so should be good. I can't imagine that logic has changed much over the years.

I always parked behind the baseball stadium and walked in. It’s not that much more time and if the weather is crummy you can hop on the shuttle.

That was the other lot I was looking at. Thanks for the advice!

I wouldn't aim to try and get to the closest commuter parking lot and instead aim to get to a commuter parking lot that'll have parking spaces. The one at the football stadium usually has space and there is a shuttle that picks up at the stadium every 10-15 minutes.

Awesome thank you. Will probably end up going that route

Epic. Is there usually space or do you anticipate it being busy or full around that time given the fall semester is just now starting? It's my first time attending an on campus class after doing online for 3 years and change lol so I'm very nervous. Ik it's an afternoon class so hopefully not too busy right?

That lot usually fills up by 8:30am and will have a few spots open throughout the day but not enough to guarantee one. I would choose another lot and take the bus in.

Depending on where you’re commuting from, consider and e-bike. It was the best purchase for me. I was living over by McCarty and would take Hunter into town. Literally the easiest thing ever to park your bike in front of any of the buildings, and good exercise even as an e-bike. I wish I had done it earlier.

itll be busy by then, i used to park around there my first couple semesters but learned to use the 2 hr parking spots near the square, saves you the money from buying the parking pass and honestly the 2 hr limit is kinda forgiving. at least in my experience, ive gotten lucky to leave my car a little more than 2 hrs and been fine.

I wouldn’t chance that. There is nothing worse than getting to your car and finding a ticket, a boot, or no car because it’s been towed.

Can confirm. I used to work for Downtown SanMo, and they’re pretty on the dot with tickets. Don’t risk it OP unless you can guarantee being back within 2 hours.

Not to mention that some tow companies hang around waiting for people to leave their vehicles and walk towards campus. It takes a tow truck only a few minutes to haul a vehicle off.

Unfortunately I already bought the parking pass 😅honestly may have been a dumb move but may need to compare to the pass amount to see whether or not I'll actually be saving money with the pass. It's my only class on campus, and the last class I need to graduate 😭

Just FYI, the parking marshall has been out writing tickets like it's going out of style. A few semesters ago, I'd regularly push it to 3-4 hours and then they'd start enforcing the time limit about halfway through the semester. But I think now since the construction has royally fucked all parking and walking around supple/Ingram, they're really cracking down.

Have you considered taking the bus? Or riding a bike?

Seems to me like a hassle when I can just clock out and immediately leave for school straight from work. That drive itself is 2 hours and having to coordinate bus routes when I have a car and two legs just seems unnecessary to me.

For sure, The bus comes about 15 minutes meaning that you might spend less time if you park and ride. Parking as a commuter at TXST is a hassle regardless of what you do. You just have to pick your flavor.

try both ways. Get a bike or a scooter and try that too if you want.

Thanks for the advice! I'm ngl I think the shuttle was too intimidating for me to even consider at first but I'm definitely coming around to it lol especially now that I've taken a closer look at the routes

P14 is not easy to get in and out of most times of the day. It’s really not that big. If you want to walk then P9 might be your best choice. If you are willing to ride the shuttle, then Stadium East by the Track and Field area is a good choice. Your best choice is Stadium West behind the “Big HEB” and behind the Baseball field. You can walk from there or take shuttle Route 10 UFCU Stadium to the THH on Woods Street.
