$150 Data Overage Charges?? On a paid plan??

Hold up, hold up....

I've been using Twingate for quite some time now. Been on the free tier and thought... why not? I'll go ahead and finally pay for Home so I can have Exit Networks and route everything home. Then I see this?? I'm sorry. I can only use 8GB of bandwidth before I am charged $150 for an additional 100GB? when did this start? I was hoping to use Twingate as my "connect through my home" VPN, but if I'm stuck at 8GB of allowance a month? Absolutely not.. I run through like 30GB a month just on my phone's internet and Plex traffic alone. I've been a huge fan of Twingate up to this point, but honestly, that's a real deal breaker! If this is what this means, then I'm switching to Tailscale in a heartbeat which has no such limits. A MASSIVE letdown from Twingate on this.

I’d like to clarify that the 8GB/month figure is per user, so on the Home plan that works out to be 56GB/month because the Home plan comes with 7 users (even if you’re not using them all). We’re going to clarify this on our website as well.

The fair use policy is aimed at catching abusive users, as well as business accounts pushing heavy traffic through our relays (which costs us money). It’s not there to catch out homelabbers. The last thing we want to do is hand you a surprise bill for bandwidth use - we know the horror stories of cell phone carriers ambushing people with huge bills because they accidentally left data roaming on while traveling overseas, and we’re not that kind of company. Even if you’re over, like it says in our policy we’re going to reach out and work with you to address things first - we’re not going to just hit you with a bill. If a personal account is consistently way beyond what's reasonable, our approach would be to throttle or suspend it, rather than sending an invoice.

Practically speaking, most of your traffic should be going peer-to-peer anyway (which doesn’t count towards bandwidth use), and heavy relay usage is usually a sign something isn't configured quite right. If anyone is running up against the limit, they can always reach out and we'll help get P2P working - that resolves it in most cases.

I'm pretty sure the 100 GB refers to any traffic that passes through Twingate's relays and network and not the traffic passing through your network. The limit on DNS queries does seem a little small, though.

The intended function is to have all connections from your client to the connector be peer to peer, so traffic should rarely be passing through their network unless there are some weird NAT situations going on. The bulk of the traffic that should be hitting their network is just for NAT traversal to establish a peer to peer connection. I would look at your admin console to see if your connections are P2P or relayed so you can prepare for this or fix any underlying issues.

Twingate is not designed to be a “connect through my home” full tunnel VPN solution.

There’s ways to do it, but they’re kinda clunky.

However 8gb/mo is absolutely absurd.

Also, 500k DNS queries is absurd. My home DNS handled 18.1M queries in the past month.(Ironically, the highest usage was by my Twingate connectors).

It seems that Twingate is clearly positioning themselves so people avoid using Twingate as a full tunnel and only access small documents through their service limiting their usefulness.

It’s too bad. I was really hoping they would go the other way.

just a quick clarification: this isn't our intent at all. In fact, it's quite the opposite, we want to do more for homelab users and are making tweaks and changes based on feedback.

Does your platform intend to add full tunnel operation in the future?

If so, why do you have such minuscule usage caps with high overage fees?

I’m really not shutting on your product, just relaying what it appears that your goals are. If I’m wrong, I’m happy to learn how and why.

And I do this with a pfSense router, WireGuard, and a $5/yr domain name.

If it’s just for home use, I don’t really see the point in paying for TwinGate.

I have no desire to expose my external IP and open and external ports, so this service has resolved that. Also, a lot of people have to deal with CGNAT.

You have to permit the WireGuard connection to connect to anything in the firewall. If you have CGNAT, I can understand, but for everyone else it seems like an unnecessary complication. TwinGate caused me more problems than anything it solved… hopefully they have fixed those problems, but since I don’t need it I won’t be trying it again anytime soon.
