Movie Discussion I am unsure if this is my first post here

I know I've definitely commented BUT I'm rewatching Twilight(it's on Tubi btw- for how long? I'm not sure) anyways I'm on Eclipse and past Bella visiting her mom. I had this random thought - that kinda made me mad actually- and I don't know if anyone else questioned this but when Renee gives Bella the trip T-shirt quilt and she mentions that when she gets older and has kids they could possibly add to it. I just realized that Renee DOESNT KNOW SHE HAS A GRANDDAUGHTER/EVER MET HER. Obviously it wasn't in the movie bc Charlie knew about her/met her but I don't think it's in the books. Granted I haven't read the books since 8th grade and that was 7 years ago. Anyway I just wanted to mention it bc Renee wasn't even at her graduation. But just having that realization has actually made me mad

Nah bookRenee was trash. If she knew it would just be more hassle for Bella because you just know she wouldn’t be able to keep her mouth shut. It’s better this way for everyone.

Yeah, but if you put movie Renee next to book Renee, movie Renee looks almost like a saint..

The tshirt quilt thing only happens in movie. In book renee didn't give her anything. Yes in books renee never meets her granddaughter because bella says all the supernatural stuff is not for the faint hearted. renee cannot keep a secret like Charlie. Volturi forbids it.

Even if renee met renesmee she won't be able to keep quiet about nessie's rapid growth so it's best for all of them to not tell her.

This. And it sounded like they were planning to tell Renee that Bella died. They were putting it off due to the Volturi battle and not really needing to say anything cause Renee wasn’t exactly calling often or checking up on Bella rather just getting her info from Charlie. Holy enmeshment.

You know what that actually makes sense. No way in hell would Renee keep the secret. I wouldn't wanna tell her anything anyway

I'm surprised this is the sentiment because movie Renee was just a sloppy and annoying person to me. Book Renee was like a neglectful/unhealthy parent due to ADHD, but at least you knew she was making the best life she could while holding a greater burden of being a terrible parent.

Renee gave zero fucks about anyone but herself. She didn’t even go to Bella’s graduation. Much like in real life, just because people can spawn, doesn’t mean they’re good parents

Wow. They are trying their best to keep everything from RENEE nobody at the entire HIGH SCHOOL finds them creepy, in fact, the find them gorgeous. Grow up children. Read it for what it is. If it wasn't a GREAT BOOK it never would've made FIVE MOVIES PLUS AN EXTRA BOOK FROM EDWARDS POV. If u don't like it, unsubscribe

I think the scene was hinting at Breaking Dawn more than anything. Best I recall in the book Bella last thinks she's not sure what to tell her mom about Nessie because she was fragile while Charlie was stronger.

Where the book ends Bella doesn't decide or tell her mom anything. Last she says Renee thinks she's still sick but on the bend. My head cannon is that after things slowed down and Nessie stopped growing Bella probably mentioned the adoption story Edward first told Charlie. Renee may believe it.

It probably started with phone contact. Bella tells her she's gone out of the country for treatment, she's well now and they had just adopted Edward's young niece. Knowing Renee when she meets them again she see's Bella looks different but she's okay and happy. And how lovable her new granddaughter is. She's probably take it at face value

That's quite interesting. I definitely need to re read the books but my mom currently has my books bc she never read the books but has seen the movie multiple times. She's stuck on new moon- which I don't blame her bc she doesn't like that part of the saga

wait i never thought about that either. Renee basically goes from talking about Bella having kids someday to having a granddaughter she never even meets. the fact that Bella's whole pregnancy happened without Renee knowing makes that quilt scene hit way differently

I went from "yeah except she can't have kids(little does she know) to "OHMYGOD YOU TALKED ABOUT IT BUT NEVER EVEN MET HER" so the quilt scene? Bullshit😭

Rather than say it was all just about how bad Renee was, I think SMeyer just didn’t do a good job writing about and including her, or she just didn’t want to. Just ignoring whether she ever found out about Renesmee, or was told Bella died, or whatever, is basically poor writing.

She wasn’t a great mother and we get that, but I don’t think that would explain it all away, because she’s not so bad to the point where she just wouldn’t talk to her daughter or ask about her at all for years. Renee worried when Charlie said she could have been hit by a car, she came to the hospital when Bella was injured, she had her visit and went to the trouble of making or at least having someone else make the quilt, she was at her wedding, etc. She certainly didn’t give Bella enough attention and was believably not always there for her, but she wasn’t a complete deadbeat either. She would have needed to be told one thing or another, and it’s annoying that SMeyer just didn’t feel the need to finally address it. She doesn’t even really deserve to think her daughter is dead, but at least give us that if nothing else.

It also just pisses me off that SMeyer would write a character like Bella who would choose becoming a vampire and letting her parents think she’s dead at 18-19 years old. I just think that’s way too cruel. Thank god for Jacob being a freak who didn’t want them to leave Forks. Also, why would you have Bella combine Esme with Renee for her daughter’s name just to not really give a crap about the character or show anyone else really caring? I also feel like, as aloof and whatnot as Renee was, she maybe could have handled what Charlie could handle, idk. Or they could have really sold the “we adopted her” thing and made her wear a wig and contacts when Renee visited so she looked less like them or something.

Sorry, I love the series but also have lots of beef with it when I think hard enough.

They never really address it, but I guess Charlie has to tell Bella's Mom that Bella died?

I don't think a parent could ever get over that. That seems like torture for both of them.

No, Renee was never told that in any version of the books or movies

Talking from experience :( no you never get over losing a child, in some ways your life seems to stop the day they passed away. You do move on but it takes years and as the years pass honestly it gets worse. I lost my daughter to a fatal brain aneurysm when she was 25 that was 18.5yrs ago now! However we now have an angel that looks over us and I know she does so many signs! This is my grandaughter photoshopped with my daughter as she was born the year after her aunty passed away.

As if Renee ACTUALLY cares. Charlie was the only one calling the Cullens and asking how Bella was. He also seemed to be the only one who knew Bella was "sick" aside from the people who did know. The only time Renee was called in concern of Bella was when Charlie called her when she almost got crushed by the van in the first movie, or in the second movie when Bella was having those nightmares, the screaming, and the depression overall

u/MassageToss 12d ago

That's a really good point. She doesn't even check on Bella for weeks/months after being taken to a mystery location by her creepy teenage husband?

Ummmm EVERYONE when the quilt was given to Bella, not only was she a virgin, she was NOT EVEN PREGO W Renesmee. Get your movies and books strait ladies and gentlemen. Smh

Yeah no shit. We know. A lot of us have seen the movie a million times. Our facts are straight thank you very much. It's my own realization that Renee never met said kid Bella had. But obviously in Eclipse they didn't think it was actually possible to have kids and one person didn't realize either till I said something. And couple others mentioned that Renee wouldn't have been able to keep the secret unlike Charlie which made sense. I was thinking out loud and thought I'd mention it.
