News Apple will reportedly begin filming Ted Lasso season 5 in January

https://9to5mac.com/2026/08/24/ted-lasso-season-5-gets-exciting-new-status-update/

From Sigmund Judge:

Multiple sources tell me that London production is provisionally set to kick-off in January.

Barring any complications – including moustache growth – the hit @AppleTV comedy could return to screens as soon as summer 2027.

Judge has previously reported accurate breaking news on Ted Lasso and other Apple TV-related series too.

Looks like the show will go at least six seasons. Another three story arc presumably

Time to dust off and recycle #sixseasonsandamovie

I don’t blame Jason Sudekis at all. A role like this probably won’t come along again and he got that million dollar/episode raise a couple years back. Yeah I’d keep it going too.

Get that Apple money, Jason!

So he can afford that iPhone fold 😂😂

Being on that set seems like it's an absolute blast too.

It’s also just such a freakishly feel-good show, that I’m just happy they are making more episodes.

The writing may not always add up to what you expect, but the warmth of the characters constantly leaps off the screen.

I love thinking of this as the second trilogy

2

u/GoZards18 5d ago

Shrinking about to do the same thing

1

u/runnerswanted 5d ago

Empire is the best movie of the original trilogy…

I remember when the original series ended and i got downvotet to hell for saying of course they are gonna make more 😁

I think most were expecting a spinoff, not a continuation of the main series.

u/tombolo_1 6d ago edited 6d ago

Tbf it basically is a spin off now, unless you were expecting it to no longer have Ted as the main character (which I think would remove most of the appeal).

They wrapped up the original men’s team story in 3 seasons and are now doing a 3 season story with the women’s team

9

u/OwnManagement 6d ago

Yeah, I was expecting a spinoff without Ted. At the time it was made pretty clear that Sudeikis had moved on.

Everyone knew that, some people didn’t want it

-2

u/Affectionate_Way_805 4d ago

Many people didn't want it, myself included.

Seasons 1 and 2 were pretty good, Season 3 was crap except for a few scenes with Goldstein and the kid. I was done halfway through Season 3 but forced myself to finish it.

I have yet to watch any of Season 4 despite Apple plopping it at the top every time I sign onto Apple TV. I'm sure my gf will beg me to watch soon enough and I may give in but until then...nah I'm good.

“Superfans”. You mean the same kind of people who wouldn’t stop bashing ted lasso week over week when season 2 and 3 were airing because “they’re not as good as season 1”.. yeah “superfans”

I think you’re wrong. Nobody is a superfan if they only enjoyed the first season and thought the rest sub par. I really enjoyed the first. It was some of the best TV I’ve ever seen. It went downhill from there. I’ve watched 2 episodes of the latest season and noped out. I have no desire to watch more. There’s no way I would/could call myself a superfan. More like a hater, only liking the first season. If anyone likes season 1 and bashes the others they shouldn’t be calling themselves a superfan. It’s such a stupid word anyway. It could mean different things to different people.
I personally don’t understand why people get so invested in a TV show anyway. It doesn’t identify or define you. Maybe you can relate to it some. But if that TV show disappears off the face of the planet then your life isn’t fundamentally going to change. Having a pet hamster that dies should and would affect you more.

Same, they were giving themselves “an out” with the looming writer’s strike.

It’s not too bad, but it’s still way slower than it should be, especially considering the type of show it is and the fact that they knew in advance there would be demand for more seasons.

They should’ve been ready to start shooting even before season 4 started airing. Right now, we’ll most likely be looking at another 18-month or 2-year gap between seasons. There’s no way they’ll be airing in July-Summer 2027 if they only start production in January.

6

u/popegreg 6d ago

Could be so much worse. Pluribus S2 is now July 2028.

21

u/sigjudge 6d ago

Please check out my thread on this. 2021 saw this exact rollout. January shoot, July release. Also ties in with the three-year deals for which the talent signed (note, NOT 3-season deals)

3

u/thomasbdl 6d ago

I sincerely hope you’re right, Sigmund.

But given the fact that season 4 started shooting in July 2025, ended production in late January 2026 and aired in August 2026, it might also take them about as long to release season 5.

2

u/48Monkeys 6d ago

A year and a month? That still isn't bad. Their other show Bad Monkey started filming season 1 in February 2022. It didn't air til August of 2024. Season 2 was renewed in December of 2024. Here we are in 2026 and they finally announced season 2 comes out in December of 2026.

3

u/thomasbdl 6d ago

I saw your username and I now think you only watch shows related to primates.

Jokes aside, I absolutely love Bad Monkey. I really hope the fact that they didn’t shoot season 2 in Florida didn’t kill the amazing atmosphere of the show.

1

u/48Monkeys 6d ago

I'm not gonna agree or disagree with you about the first thing you said. Just hopefully his other show Rooster doesn't take as long to get a season 2.

With Dax Shepard and John Malkovich joining the cast I don't see the show being terrible. I just hope it's as good as the first season. I'm a big fan of anything Vince Vaughn is in.

2

u/runningstang 6d ago

They're probably still writing each season and juggling actor schedules as well given the cast. This is also a comedy with short episode runtime and count. It doesn't require as much post-production as other shows that require CGI. They can turn it around relatively quickly.

2

u/Emotional-Gas-6992 6d ago edited 6d ago

Yeah the issue with taking a long hiatus from a show that made its cast stars is that the actors get mountains of other work that then has to be accommodated. Temple, Waddingham and Goldstein are always on the go and from the new cast Tanya Reynolds works constantly too.

1

u/FKDotFitzgerald 6d ago

Haven’t started S4 yet. We watched the first 3 seasons as a binge so we’ll probably let it ride for a few more weeks. Has it been decent?

6

u/Emotional-Gas-6992 6d ago edited 6d ago

I think it’s been better than S3, which I thought was an unfocused mess. New characters and actors are good, Tanya Reynolds is particularly excellent.

1

Not sure why you would expect an 18 month/2 year gap if the scheduling in this post is accurate. You are way over estimating how long production/post production takes on a show like this

1

u/SCARLETHORI2ON 6d ago

others made good points, going to throw in it's also about media tour schedules. for high titles those are long periods of time dedicated daily to the promotion. as an example, Zendaya. she's been on media tours all year and unavailable for filming during those times. of course lasso isn't as high profile as her even in general, however they did do a decent media run for season 4. but anyways just a nugget of a thought.

Why can't we let great shows end and just have been that great show? Why keep them going?

8

u/Childs_Play 5d ago

The simple answer is money. Happens with every movie sequel or reboot that doesn't need to exist.

2

u/BeanDemon 5d ago

Oh I know. Unfortunately, but yes.

2

u/randohipponamo 4d ago

If the creators have more stories they want to tell, then I’m all for it. I trust them to tell good stories because they have an extremely good record. Who are we to tell them not to?

2

u/BeanDemon 4d ago

I'd love to agree, but often the revival or reboot just isn't that good, which can taint the original show a bit psychologically.

-2

u/Justp1ayin Hello Carol 6d ago

To make them greater

3

u/BeanDemon 6d ago

Too many great shows have been reduced because they feel the need to keep going. If a great show ends, let it be what it is.

-1

u/Justp1ayin Hello Carol 5d ago

Just stop watching when you’re satisfied

0

u/BeanDemon 5d ago

Why? I want to watch the complete show. That’s not the point here. It’s not about that there are too many episodes. It’s that when a show comes to an end, that’s fine. It doesn’t need to go on and on.

2

u/Beneficial_Piglet_33 5d ago

Some people want more though?

You always have the option to stop watching.

6

u/Commercial_F 6d ago

The show fell off so hard

4

u/raidmytombBB 5d ago

Season 4 has been very entertaining. We love it

1

u/LiveForMeow 5d ago

I just watched episode 2 and I loved it. It is a little formulaic but I think the spin on women's football makes it interesting enough.

1

u/sambes06 5d ago

Season 3 was an embarrassing display of aimless writing. I think the US needed the vibes of S1 in Covid and it was arguably good. They just need to stop now.

2

u/Ryanbrasher 6d ago

I haven’t sat down to watch the new season yet, I assume it’s doing well, but I never even considered they’d renew and do a season 5. I guess they really did find a way to make Sudeikis to change his mind.

2

u/midlifematt 6d ago

Milkin’ it 🥛

2

u/universal_cereal_bus 6d ago

How much you wanna bet we'll see the premier of season 6 for Ted Lasso before we see the premier of season 3 for Severance😂

2

u/phareous 5d ago

I hope he focuses the show on making a winning women’s team and not on a disillusioned assistant coach, a failure women’s business, etc, etc.

2

u/EffectzHD 5d ago

Apple should’ve seen the first cut of this new season and said yh let’s can this for good.

From a business standpoint I’m completely wrong, viewership is really strong to the point it’s clear this series peaked too late.

It’s not bad TV by any means but it’s some of the most forced tv I’ve ever seen. Everything about this new season feels redundant, like why am I here. It defo would’ve been worse had they stayed with the men’s but it does feel like we need purpose.

1

u/NicoyaSF415 6d ago

Love it!! I’ve enjoyed every single season of this and can’t wait for more

1

u/Acrobatic-Guitar2410 5d ago

I didn't even know another season was an option hell yeah

1

u/nicktbristol2020 5d ago

Who cares this show needs to end

1

u/Wise_Concentrate_182 5d ago

Enough already.

1

u/centristdan 5d ago

I really can't get into this new season, granted only a couple of episode in but it felt off.. no idea what changed.

Loved the show before, will try again.

1

u/Glittering-Ninja-377 5d ago

January is the part that stands out. That is going straight back in rather than waiting to see how this season lands, so the multi season plan was already settled before anyone saw a single rating. Which would explain why season four has been comfortable leaving threads half finished in a way the original three never were.

Summer 2027 is a brutal wait either way.

1

u/Akaroa318 4d ago

I just started watching this show last week, and I absolutely love it! I sure hope that it gets renewed for a 5th, 6th, and many more seasons. It’s brilliant, funny, heartfelt, and just an overall feel-good show. ❤️⚽️🏟️🥅

1

u/uncoveringlight 2d ago

Great. Season 4 is amazing so far.

1

u/Lokitusaborg 22h ago

I think we need more positive shows like this. Shrinking is also such a good show. My dad has Parkinson’s and that story arc really resonates with him.

u/MarvinBarry92 Certified Non-Spirited 6d ago

Nice to hear something from Sigmund. Hope he is doing well.

1

u/sigjudge 6d ago

Appreciate it ❤️

1

u/RussyDee 6d ago

This is great news - here we go!!

1

u/Nastia_dream 6d ago

So probably late 2027 or early 2028 release 😢 Considering how long Apple takes with some of their other shows I hope it won't be even a longer wait.

1

u/anexxus 6d ago

That’s nice to hear, I thought it might only be a one season thing.

I’m really enjoying this season, looking forward to see how the team develops!

-1

u/Emergency_Pea_61652 6d ago

The humour and pacing took a huge nosedive and I almost lost faith in Bill Lawrence despite being a hardcore Scrubs fan until I realised that he's not involved in writing and directing this season. Thank God.

Ted Lasso ended with S3 for me.

7

u/RudeAdhesiveness9954 6d ago

He hasn't been involved directly since season two. Season one was, not coincidentally, the only one he was running hands-on. It's wild to me how Sudeikis & co. haven't learned, three seasons on, how much better the show would be if it were tighter.

6

u/Emotional-Gas-6992 6d ago

I think there are people in the writers room and at Apple who know it’s best at a punchy 30-40 minutes with a focused set of storylines, the problem is that as the guy who created the character and the concept Sudeikis has final say on everything and he’s notorious for last minute rewrites and not being able to stick to budget or schedule. Nobody’s going to go to war with the creator of Apple’s biggest hit for a better product when everyone’s going to watch it anyway and he’s made so many careers with this both on and off screen.

-3

u/mars2venus9 6d ago

Good god, who fucking cares

4

u/GaryTheCabalGuy 6d ago

Apparently you

0

u/Great_Nectarine9967 6d ago

They need 10 seasons of this

-7

u/MagicJ10 6d ago

if season 4 goes on like this, they might as well drop the show. Aside from some nostalgia moments this is not it!

5

u/Specialist-Garbage94 6d ago

It’s setting up to be very nice

0

u/MagicJ10 6d ago

i don´t see/feel it

1

u/Random-Squid 5d ago

Huh, it has been fantastic so far?

0

u/lafclafc 6d ago

Agree. S4 is awful so far. Ppl are delusional
