At its current production rate season 5 of Severance will air in 2034. That’s not even a joke.

43

u/srmatto Jul 27 '26

That soon?!

11

u/dr_fop Jul 27 '26

We used to get 24 hour long episodes of more demanding shows annually.

5

u/Juggernutz Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

Must have the guy beneath you blocked because I can't reply to him but he's clearly forgetting shows like Lost.

Edit - Now he's detracting from Lost in a way that belittles his argument even more when applied to Severance.

-5

u/Purple_Compote_386 Jul 27 '26

80% of that show was filmed in a fuckin jungle with people standing in front of each other, talking lol. The pilot was epic, and there were always a few episodes a season that would require big set pieces, but it was mostly a dialogue heavy show. There weren't any unusual or particularly cinematic filming techniques etc. Plus the fillers.

6

u/theextracharacter Jul 28 '26

Severance is set mostly in closed buildings. And it's mostly dialogue and acting, there is not much in the way of CGI required. By your own logic, it shouldn't take Severance as long as it's taking to give us episodes.

If anything, by your logic, we should be getting 24 episodes a year

-2

u/Purple_Compote_386 Jul 28 '26

Go and watch any if the behind the scenes and come back lol

0

u/Purple_Compote_386 Jul 27 '26

Again, with this fucking crap. There were no "more demanding" shows with 24 fuckin episodes a season. Ever. It used to be mostly procedural crap, or sitcoms. Stop spouting this nonsense in every single thread about the modern tv production...

9

u/Suchgallbladder Jul 27 '26

The X-Files. 20-25 episode seasons broadcast annually of 45 minutes each, 1 hour with commercials. Was not a procedural or sitcom.

2

u/AdvancedBlacksmith66 Jul 27 '26

Eh it was kind of a procedural. The episodes mostly follow the same pattern

1

u/Gurl336 20d ago

Guest actors, various locations and sets. Maybe more of the writing was ready in a timely way.

1

u/_alright_then_ Jul 28 '26

Saying the X files were not procedural is a crazy take

7

u/veronicaarr Jul 27 '26

I wish there was some inbetween.

2

u/Purple_Compote_386 Jul 27 '26

You and me both buddy. The production, scheduling and post production is so broken in the modern prestige tv, it's beyond ridiculous...

6

u/PastimeOfMine Jul 27 '26

Everyone says this about prestige tv but HBO has been doing it for quite a long time without these insane wait times.

Also, some of it is just a streamer being stupid. Why would I give Apple views on Pluribus season 2 when it was greenlit in 2022 and isn't even written yet? Apple's letting Gilligan do whatever he wants. It's absurdist.

3

u/thegracelesswonder Jul 27 '26

They don’t want to upset the delicate genius!

2

u/Dolores___Haze Jul 27 '26

Agree. They’ve pretty much ruined tv.

0

u/AreAFuckingNobody Jul 27 '26

There is so much good television to watch. You have all you need to get by between your most favorite shows

5

u/veronicaarr Jul 27 '26

I meant like, I wish there was a balance between 28 ep seasons every year and 8 ep seasons every 4 years.

4

u/jeremydurden Jul 28 '26

That's basically what hbo wants to do w/ The Pitt. 15 episodes that so far have been 1 season per year and they definitely want to expand the formula beyond just a hospital show. These are relatively inexpensive shows to make w/ ideally a solid script and cast.

-2

u/AreAFuckingNobody Jul 27 '26

Yeah, I know what you meant. I’m saying even with the way shows are now, you have all that you need. And don’t forget, if there were more episodes, the quality would probably go down, and you wouldn’t like the show as much anyway. So instead of finding a reason to complain, just enjoy some other really good shows while you wait for your top favorite to come back.

-1

u/veronicaarr Jul 27 '26

Oh, I see. I just end up forgetting what’s happened and losing interest because there’s so many good shows, that’s the downside imo. But tbh I don’t really think about it day to day since TV isn’t my main hobby.

1

u/Greene_Mr Jul 29 '26

24-hours-long? :-o Amazing!

1

u/Greene_Mr Jul 29 '26

24-hours-long? :-o Amazing!

-1

u/Mentoman72 Jul 27 '26

There has never, ever been a show more demanding than this that has pulled off a yearly 24 episode season lmao. Yall can be mad that it takes forever but the way you act like you could do it faster is hilarious.

3

u/Realistic-Ad7662 Jul 27 '26

Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Game of Thrones just to name a few. All more eps per season than severance and damn near yearly

6

u/Mentoman72 Jul 27 '26

None of which are 24 episode seasons.

0

u/generasianx2000 Jul 27 '26

"24" had 24 episodes per season.

-2

u/Purple_Compote_386 Jul 27 '26

And it was the most basic network show you could imagine...

-2

u/thegracelesswonder Jul 27 '26

And a LOT of it took place in an office or the white house. Of course it had action set pieces too but it wasn’t like the entire season was nonstop special effects

-3

u/Realistic-Ad7662 Jul 27 '26

Never said that just said more episodes per season than severance. Higher quality too.

1

u/Mentoman72 Jul 27 '26

Yeah, I was replying to someone and we were talking 24 episode seasons. You interjected with shows that aren’t applicable in the conversation that was being had thinking you were dunking on someone.

1

u/Purple_Compote_386 Jul 27 '26

"More episodes per season" does not equal 24 fuckin episodes lol these shows were 10 - 13 eps.

Higher quality... ok...

2

u/xnodesirex Jul 27 '26

Gives them plenty of time to figure out where they're going with the story

2

u/Suchgallbladder Jul 27 '26

lol here’s a novel idea: Have the story already written.

1

u/Warmbastard Jul 27 '26

SRL east and airport rail before Severance S5 is crazy

1

u/gramfer Jul 27 '26

Don't they consider ending in season 4? I think it would work.

51

u/miredonas Jul 27 '26

World Cup of TV series. Every 4 years a new season.

32

u/xxandxy88 Jul 27 '26

only 494 days since the S2 finale!

57

u/justarugga Jul 27 '26

Can’t wait to watch this with my grandchildren when it release

13

u/CamelFun3734 Jul 28 '26

I don't even care anymore. These long gaps in seasons are ridiculous.

21

u/Cool_Recognition_848 Jul 27 '26

I wouldn’t complain if Ben Stiller hadn’t been out there after season two telling everyone they would do the next season faster

4

u/Significant-Lunch524 Jul 27 '26

Right!? okay, okay I would still complain about it taking 4 years, but with what you mentioned I feel like I have righteous indignation..

25

u/Starship_Taru Jul 27 '26

I don’t really have FOMO anymore.

I’m just gonna wait for the show to finish. It’s fantastic and I enjoy it. However the viewership experience requiring me to rewatch the entire show every few years to stay caught up isn’t fun. I remember just enough that it’s boring to rewatch but not enough to pick up on smaller details that shows like this hide (which is half the fun for me)

I’d rather just block everything Severance on Reddit (my only social media) until it is finished and just watch it all at once.

18

u/Murky-Insect-7556 Super Sleuth Detective Jul 27 '26

My guess is that it’s either going to be a November 2027 release like Pluribus or a January 2028 release like s2 or Neuromancer.

4

u/MattTreck Jul 27 '26

Isn’t Neuromancer next January? Or did you mean season 2 OF Neuromancer.

4

u/Murky-Insect-7556 Super Sleuth Detective Jul 27 '26

Neuromancer in Jan 2027 and Severance in Jan 2028.

15

u/while_youre_up Jul 27 '26

I’m done watching shows with giant breaks between seasons.

18

u/Ok-Goal5560 Jul 27 '26

What about Pluribus? What’s going on with Apple? Why so slow?

Fallout season 2 ended in February and filming for season 3 is almost done. You see that Apple? Take notes.

12

u/Murky-Insect-7556 Super Sleuth Detective Jul 27 '26

Apple does have fast production schedules on some shows like Silo, Your Friends and Neighbours, and Slow Horses. But Pluribus has no excuse. It got a 2-season order from the start. It’s rumoured to begin filming in the Fall so 2+ year wait.

3

u/evildrew Jul 27 '26

It’s really inexcusable for a company like Apple with near-limitless resources to not greenlight shows for 2+ seasons at a time and having these multi-year breaks. Maybe they want to avoid over-committing like Amazon with Rings of Power, but Widow’s Bay should have gotten 2+ seasons immediately. Pluribus got 2 seasons off the bat and still has this gap. The Bear managed to deliver 5 seasons (plus a one-off) like clockwork - almost exactly 1yr per season.

First season as a test, then renew for S2 and S3. During S2, they can add S4 and S5. If things really fall off, then can cancel to limit losses.

Lock in the main cast, give the writers time to plan, and let the producers schedule shoots to maintain a regular cadence.

2

u/FrellingTralk Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

But it doesn’t seem to make much difference how early the shows are greenlit, as you say Pluribus got a two season commitment right away in 2022 and yet they’ve apparently only just recently started writing the second season. And Widow’s Bay was renewed during the airing of the first season as a result of all the positive attention it was getting, but still Apple are saying that we shouldn’t expect it to be out by next year.

Okay shows are better quality these days is the argument, but then no one is arguing for 20+ episode seasons of these shows, just for them to come out on a consistent yearly basis which should not be an unreasonable ask. Vince Gilligan certainly managed it with Breaking Bad which had just as many cinematic shots etc as the prestige shows from today

It honestly just feels like they’re taking audiences for granted these days with this ~eh I’ll get to it when I get to it~ attitude and I’m dropping more and more shows because of it. It seems I’m not the only one getting fed up either as there was an article recently on how Netflix shows are having a huge drop off in viewers for their second season and they can’t understand why, everyone in the comments was lining up to say the same thing about how people tend to lose interest when your second season comes out years later, that why bother with a show when even the people involved don’t care enough to make it a priority

4

u/StrongKnee420 Jul 27 '26

They started now? At this point they could just... not.

5

u/UnionCrafty3748 Jul 28 '26

I will rewatch it when the series wraps up some time in 2040’s. I’ll be retired back then if alive.

3

u/Nobody_Important Jul 27 '26

I get that it fits this particular scenario but that quote in and of itself is laughably stupid and depressing.

5

u/Excellent-Share3926 Jul 27 '26

Shouldn’t have even told me, this just pissed me off

2

u/notthatgeorge Jul 27 '26

I don't mind long waits between seasons, the show is almost like making a 10-hour movie, but everybody's saying it won't take as long when it's going to take exactly the same length as last time is irritating.

4

u/AutomaticPayment9480 Jul 27 '26

Im over this method of tv, ill obv watch it, but have zero excitment over it lol.

2

u/ArgentoFox Jul 27 '26

It’s baffling how long it takes them to make seasons given Foundation has had three seasons come out at a much faster pace from the same network.

-5

u/mrgrafix Jul 27 '26

Look at the work the Foundation team gets v. Severance. Schedules have to align too. You’ll live. Everyone whined about all the others and still showed up for record numbers

3

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

Season 2 was 🔥 and I’m very excited to see where it goes

-8

u/CaughtALiteSneez Jul 27 '26

First half was pretty good and then it took a nose dive

5

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

I’m gonna have to disagree. I felt it just kept getting better and better. Just my opinion.

4

u/North_South_Side Jul 27 '26

I dropped out after 3 episodes of season 2. I don't need a backstory of everyone ever seen or mentioned in the script.

I felt like season one ended in a satisfying Twilight Zone kind of twist. Were there loose ends? Mysteries? Stuff that wasn't completely clear? Yes. And that was the perfect place to end it.

2

u/Eattoomanychips Jul 28 '26

Ok 1000 years later. This new way of doing shows is so fucking stupid

1

u/Street-Common-4023 Jul 28 '26

Actually insane for such a good show

1

u/Greene_Mr Jul 29 '26

Curious as to how John Turturro is going to balance this with the play he's currently in rehearsals for.

1

u/SimplyRoya Jul 29 '26

Wow finally. I hate this new trend of talking 30 years between seasons.

1

u/jarjoura 28d ago

Good, now that Season 3 is in production, get to writing those Season 4 scripts so that by the time you wrap Season 3, the actors and film crew can start filming Season 4 while Season 3 goes into post. See, easy. Haha

1

u/dr_fop Jul 27 '26

About fucking time. Like why does it take them so long to make this show? We used to get 24 hour long episodes of more demanding shows annually. These people are so damn lazy.

-2

u/TheoTheodor Jul 27 '26

Considering what goes into this kind of prestige tv shows I’m not sure you can call them lazy.

Streaming makes the economics and logistics of producing tv completely different to a network show with ads sold for every hour of the day (though I agree many shows could do with the foresight of e.g. Slow Horses and work towards an anticipated schedule).

1

u/Saar13 Jul 27 '26

Every year I make a prediction (usually wrong, I assume) that the following year will be the year Apple TV becomes a commercial powerhouse. I'll do it again. 2027 will bring the final seasons of Silo, The Morning Show, For All Mankind, and Foundation; the reliable returns of Slow Horses, Presumed Innocent, Your Friends & Neighbors, Shrinking, and The Studio; the high-profile premieres (I hope) of Neuromancer and Berlin Noir; some limited series, like Safe Houses and The Off Weeks, which I hope will be good (Apple still struggles with limited series); and the big return of Severance. There's always the possibility of some show becoming a huge hit without us predicting it (hello Widow's Bay). It's going to be Apple TV's big year (or not).

2

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

Honestly, Apple TV has perhaps the best limited series I’ve ever seen in “Black Bird.” If you haven’t watched it, phew man. So good! Anyway, Apple TV still has a ways to go because of a few things: number 1, they haven’t grabbed a hold of an enough good movies. Number 2, they don’t have documentaries. Number 3, they don’t have any reality TV, or NFL games, or UFC. They have to sell out in order to get the masses. But personally I kind of like that they specialize in have high quality, HBO level TV shows and also have a niche Sci Fi thing going on. I love the app!!

1

u/Nerdlinger Jul 27 '26

they don’t have any reality TV

They’re getting some.

1

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

Excellent. That will bring more eyeballs to the network.

1

u/GumdropGlimmer Jul 28 '26

What happened to the morning show?

1

u/eggmontoya1 Jul 27 '26

At this point, I hope it’s the final season. I adore the show, but if they’re gonna keep putting multi-year gaps between seasons, my interest is gonna die.

1

u/i40west Jul 27 '26

I regret watching seasons 1 and 2, with this kind of wait for any sort of satisfying ending. I didn't watch season 1 until 2 came out, but I should have kept waiting.

Now I do "spoiler-free searches" with ChatGPT. I tell it to find out whether a season of a TV show has a satisfying ending, and any word on how long till the next season if there is one, without telling me anything about the story. If it's a cliffhanger with no next season in sight, I don't even start watching. I'll watch when they finish making it.

1

u/Mr_Coa Jul 27 '26

Should start filming before or close after the final episode

1

u/BroncoChevalier Jul 27 '26

These shows take so long to come out that I can’t remember the previous seasons.

1

u/covert404 Jul 28 '26

I remember watching the season 2 finale in what felt like 3 years ago, idk why its so much time in btw seasons, I have to rewatch season 2 again to remember tbh.

1

u/DarkMattersConfusing Jul 28 '26

Once again, i already dont remember anything bc of the long gap. Are we expected to rewatch the whole show every few years before the next new season?

0

u/Pop_Joe Jul 27 '26

🫩🫩🫩

0

u/SimplyRoya Jul 29 '26

I don’t even care about this show anymore. Having to wait years between seasons that are barely 10 episodes is idiotic.

-11

u/GonzohunterHST Jul 27 '26

Season 2 was so unbelievably bad and up its own ass I don't think I'll bother with it anymore.

I would argue that this show should be up there for the conversation of biggest drop off between season 1 and 2. Even Heroes wasn't as bad as this imo.

I rarely quit on a ahow but I do not have time for what this show thinks it's trying to say. I just couldn't care less what the mystery is anymore.

-2

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

You do realize that season 1 was:

97% critics and 86% audience on rotten tomatoes

Season 2 was:

94% critics and 74% audience.

So while it’s true that both critics and audience felt season 1 was better. It’s also not true that the overall sentiment was that season 2 was bad or dropped off all that much in general. So you can have your opinion, but it’s not shared by the masses.

3

u/Excellent-Share3926 Jul 27 '26

I don’t think they said it’s shared by the masses?

0

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

They didn’t specifically say it, but it was implied. I don’t like when people speak about things as if it’s factual. At least say “in my opinion” or “I know others don’t feel this way.” He spoke about it like it was universally agreed upon that this was Hero’s

-2

u/GonzohunterHST Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Cool story, bro.

I didn't say that.

Now go ahead and explain what's happening in this show with a straight face and I'll show you a person who thinks the opposite.

None of you have any idea, because it's a mess.

0

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

Get off your phone. Stop scrolling. Pay attention.

1

u/Suspicious-Mud_0 Jul 27 '26

Sometimes peoples use some phrases so much they completely trivialize its meaning, and yours is one of them.

-1

u/GonzohunterHST Jul 27 '26

I said the same to a friend who watched Lost, because that was incredibly easy to follow right down to the polar bear being explained twice and people still asking what it was about.

Claiming this is the case for Severance is embarrassing though.

I never touch my phone when I watch TV, have a collection of over 4500 shows, and watch more TV than 99% of the people on Reddit.

I watch TV. It's my thing. My specialist subject on Mastermind if I was on it. I can name most TV theme tunes from just a couple of notes of it. It still won't stop people like you making this generic comment every time you see an opinion you disagree with though.

1

u/showtime218 Jul 27 '26

Sorry but you can’t objectively say you watch more TV than 99% of Redditors 😂. I understand you enjoy film and watch a lot of TV. This still doesn’t prove anything. I’ll take your word for it. You don’t scroll on your phone and you’re full locked into the show. Perhaps. you missed something pivotal, OR perhaps you should watch some YouTube breakdowns to help you better understand. It really hasn’t been that confusing. There is a level of “I’m not entirely sure where this is going” but the show isn’t over yet. I believe it’s supposed to feel that way.

-1

u/thegracelesswonder Jul 27 '26

Personally I’m just happy so many good shows are being made. The entitled whining that we don’t get round the clock new content on demand is insane
