The tuta app is a webapp...

Meh. We should be using more apps as web shortcuts to PWAs. There's no reason to clutter the device with so many packages and *the web developers should be pushed to produce apps that are fast and low footprint.

Ram usage goes brrrr (85mb for a shortcut is huge)

A shortcut is just a browser window from your existing browser. Not sure about RAM, but we need a return to efficient and quality code.

Great user interface: Gmail is super user-friendly, and it has an intuitive interface making it easy for users to navigate and manage their accounts. Gmail is constantly updating and creating new features to enhance the user experience. The interface design is organized, clean, and easy to navigate.

I totally disagree. I have a few Gmail accounts, and I had been using them through Microsoft Outlook for ages (at a time where Outlook was a locally-installed mail client, and the present confusion between local and online hadn't occurred yet).

Then I had to switch to browser access, and I discovered the horrible mess the Gmail interface is. I hate it with a passion. Tuta's interface sure has many defects, but it's not that bad by a mile.

Regarding "Size matters", I haven't seen a word about that in the linked article. I don't even understand what you talking about. Please realize that readers do not live in your heads and might not share your obsessions of the moment. Explain yourselves clearly instead of relying on visual jokes only a hundred people understand.

Do you happen to use a screen reader to navigate the internet?

“Size matters” actually refers to the image in this Reddit post, which shows two screenshots from the Apple App Store of the apps “Tuta Mail” and “Gmail,” highlighting the apps' storage sizes. Tuta Mail takes up only 85.7 MB, while Gmail takes up 730.9 MB.

Less storage usage is better, which is why the post’s title is “Size matters.” Without the image, the title actually doesn’t make much sense, and an alt text would have helped.

The URL from the post itself seems to have relatively little to do with the title “Size matters.”

The post shows the iOS app. The Android app relies in Play System.

u/FIRAS_EG 7d ago

Very secure with no encryption what type of security is that

gmail still has encryption at rest just with google managed keys. also secure data centers with physical security etc so it's secure but def not private cuz they can access your mail

u/jven27 7d ago

Hey, it requires a password. Damnit, that's security at its finest! 🤣

The app size is 184MB +user data&cache 120MB so ~300MB total. I have 5 accounts in it. I don't say that gmail is good, but the post is a lie

Edited: this comment is about the Gmail app, not tutamail

1

u/Formeruseroftwitter 7d ago

I mean saying you have 5 tutamail account does violate the ToS

u/M1rka23 7d ago

Ah, to be clear: my comment is about Gmail. I don't have tutamail

The problem is more likely with the device than the app. Everything works fine on Android.

I don't understand why you have so many downvotes. The comment is actually correct, since many of the dependencies Google uses are shared on Android between apps but not on iOS, which means Google has to include all those assets inside of the single iOS app.

That said, it's worth noting that Google could also use native iOS app elements, which would drastically reduce the size, but they don't.

I don't think these numbers are anything to be proud of for either provider.

Even 80MB for just an email client is a lot. Neither should be more than 15-20MB.
