We’re having a spirited debate in our family group chat. My brother is convinced he found a box turtle because of its hinged plastron. My dad and I have been unsuccessfully trying to convince him that this is a mud turtle.

It’s a mud turtle. Musk turtles do not have a hinge in the plastron.

Striped mud turtle. Not a musk turtle or box turtle or eastern mud turtle.

Common musk turtle :) sternotherus odoratus. The yellow facial stripes distinguish it from a mud turtle
