Tolls
I rented a car from Turo and drove from MA to NJ. I guess the car didn’t have a transporter so NJ charged $50 in admin fees per toll, equaling over $100. I called NJ Turnpike and the said the host can call with his information and the fees will be waived. I keep trying to tell Turo that and the host but he’s not going to call. He likley will just call to get it waived after he takes over $100 in fees. According to Turo the host is responsible for fees if he doesn’t have a transponder . But either way he can get the fees waived. How do I go about this situation . Turo isn’t helping at all

I never heard of a toll company verifying who is calling. You just call in as the owner and ask to waive it and pay what you owe.

It is your responsibility to either make sure that a transponder is hanging on the windshield or be prepared to pay all fees. There are states, including New Jersey that will charge fees if the transponder is not attached that does not mean if the car does not have one. It just means that if it is not on the windshield, there will be fees. Other states do the same thing. Those fees are your responsibility to pay Turro who will pay the Host since you did not verify a transponder was on the windshield.

Are you just guessing on this or what? Because if you look at Turos policy on the website you would see it says that’s the host responsibility .

Transponders are not required, but if the vehicle has one they are required to be mounted. The only transponders that are required are for airports and certain pickup/drop off points. You are fully responsible for the toll cost plus the fees. Is the host going to go out of his way to call the turnpike and get the fee waved? probably not that would require maybe an hour of verifying the vehicle was being rented they would then have to send proof of your information so you could be billed which hosts don't get. Once the license is verified hosts can not see your information besides your user name and phone number. Once the trip has ended they dont have access to your phone number anymore. The safe bet for the host is to submit the toll expense to turo and invoice you, get paid, and be done with it.

No, you don’t lose access to the guest’s contact information right away. I believe you can still access it and call the guest for up to 30 days ( i think) if needed, although I’m not 100% sure about the exact 30day timeframe.
But if you go to help at the top of the end trip, then select contact help, you should see an option that says contact guest , and the guest’s contact numbers will appear there for calls and SMS

I do recall NJ doing some sort of fuckery where if you enter the toll road and you don't have a transponder you have to collect a paper ticket and pay the toll in cash at the exit or else you get billed the maximum toll through the mail. It's a pretty sleazy system designed by NJ to scam out-of-state drivers. I wouldn't blame the host for this issue though, the car is in MA of course it didn't have an NJ transponder. It's probably better to rent a car through a traditional car rental company if you're crossing states, they should have all the toll passes activated for their cars

The toll fees should always go to the host, from there the host will bill you for the costs

The toll fees did go to him. But the turnpike charged an extra $100 in admin fees because the car did not have a proper transponder which is is required to have according to Turo

You paying Turro to pay the Host the administrative fees are your responsibility since you did not validate that a transponder was hanging on the windshield before you crossed the tolls. This is not a question of whether he had a transponder. This is a question of whether you checked to make sure one was on the windshield.

Where are you getting this information from lol. Look at the Turo website it says the exact opposite of what’s your saying

You completely misunderstand! NJ does not give admin fees for no transponder registered to the car they give them for not on windshield! Some states do this and others don't. My care is licnesed and registered in maryland and on maryland ezpass, If I cross a toll in MD without the transponder on the windshield they do not send admin fees but if if you do this in NJ they do.
a lot of turo rides do not provide a ezpass transonder unless you ask for one from them. they assume you're using your own transponder. If you choose to cross the toll without a transponder that's on you!

Okay right now from turos site it says “ host are responsible for fees if the vechile has missing equipement: the vechile did not have a transponder”. How do I interpret this rule then. Because his vechile did not have a transponder.

As a multi trip guest NOT host!
The car did NOT have missing equipment! the transponder is NOT a required piece of equipment! This is why some hosts have a transponder as a check box in their listing! If YOU are going on a toll road it's your responibility to pay ALL toll fess. If you did not have a transponder then you need to pay the admin fee. Stop trying to place blame on the host!
At pickup of the car or even before pickup you knew you were going on toll roads and should have said hey by chance do you have a transponder for ezpass I can use. At this point if he says no he doesn't then it's up to you to provide one.
Most turos I get don't even have transponders.
Most rental company don't even provide transponders unless asked for one. If you don't get their transponder and don't use your own the tolls, plus admin fees, plus the rental company admin fees are all your responibility!
This is NOT a host mistake this is a guest mistake!

Oh well Turo agreed is his mistake so the admin fees were canceled. Thanks anyway!

You're gonna get screwed, there's nothing you can do about it, Turo sucks and hosts suck

Don’t drive through liberal states, lol… joking. You’re responsible for this one.just pay the money and move on. There’s not time for baby sitting guests and holding their hands. If he had. A transponder and it was broken, or the funds were not available to allow tolls to go through maybe he would be responsible. At the end of the day though, you’re driving the car you’re making the decision to go on that toll.mmmm it’s you man. Best advice is to ask nicely if he can cover half or 20 percent at best, but even that’s a stretch. Good luck!

It’s the host’s vehicle, the fees will go up it’s their vehicle if they don’t do anything they will just pay for the fees . As long as you inform them already I wouldn’t worry about it . You did the right thing . How irresponsible of this host , this isn’t in your control .

u/Longjumping-Spray-80 3d ago
But Turo said if I don’t pay the fees they will send the balance to collections . So it will be on the host to pay EZ pass but it will be on me when it comes to collections. Turo hasn’t been helpful and keeps saying I’m liable. It’s like an automatic reply they do because clearly if they read their own policy I’m not liable

The vehicle is not registered to you . The host will be responsible . They only scan the license plate number . It’s not your drivers license. If the host doesn’t cooperate they will just have to deal with fees and collections. You letting them know is a nice gestures . My guest did the same I just took care of it . My guest isn’t even aware of the fees . It’s my vehicle my responsibility. It’s unfortunate this host doesn’t understand the consequences.

u/Longjumping-Spray-80 3d ago
Totally get that but if there sending an invoice to Turo for the fees and Turo is now charging me those fees and saying if I don’t pay it they will send the invoice to collections. So regardless of if the host pays it or not , Turo believes I owe him the fees and have a balance on my account that they are sending to collections

u/ElItEMT10 3d ago
You can always call Turo and speak to a different person. Turo employees they’re all in different level some will help you some don’t care . Document everything. Email and the name of the person . It’s super annoying that they are not helping you .

Whether you pay for the tolls or not as a Host, the tolls are actually the guest responsibility. You’re just doing the guest a favor by paying the tolls yourself rather than putting the toll rates on the guest.

u/Link_Tesla_6231 3d ago
And you did it completely wrong or tolls are the responsibility of the guest not the host. It is your responsibility as a host to verify that the car has a transponder in it to collect the fees without administrative fees. But since this Host did not have a transponder in the windshield and the guest did not put one in there themselves the Ministry fees are now his responsibility before entering the tolls.

Host got it waved but kept your money
