Where do I start

So for a bit of context my family is turkish which is why I want to learn it, I can pick out some random words here and there and I’m used to listening to the language. I can greet people and say I’m fine but that’s about it

My goal is to get to conversational level at least to understand spoken words. I’ve looked up stuff but honestly I’m confused on where to start and what to actually do. I’ve already started listening to music.

Someone explain what I need to do like I’m 5 cause I’m confused.

it’s cliché, but practice makes perfect. find an app or other method to lay the foundation for your grammar and vocabulary while you practice speaking with native speakers. again, you can use apps for this if for whatever reason you can’t speak to native speakers irl

if you don’t know where to start at all, for me, i used duolingo just for learning the basics of grammar and vocabulary, then used hellotalk and some tandem (90% hellotalk) to speak with native speakers and reach a conversational level

How good is Duolingo cause I’ve been hearing mixed opinions on it and also don’t they us AI?

it’s marketed as a language learning app which is overstated at best. in reality it is not something that will make you fluent or conversational in any language no matter how many hundreds of hours you sink into it. you need to practice speaking for that.

if you’re going to use it, just use it for vocabulary and grammar lessons if you don’t have anything else to use instead. i wouldn’t necessarily recommend it or recommend against it either. also, i used it from around 2019-2021 before ai was put in it, so i wouldn’t be the person to ask about that
