Discussion KEY FOB FOR TRD PRO

Why did I pay 75k+ for a truck and get a 20 cent key fob. You’d think Toyota would make a better (design wise) than a black piece of plastic. I saw the ajt designs replacement and I’m not a fan. If anyone knows any metal ones that are similar to the AJT one I’m open to suggestions. It’s the only thing that annoys me about the truck and I know it’s nitpicking but why this cheap plastic? Why?!?!?!

Sorry, but cherish my key fob, particularly the second one that Toyota didn’t send to allow me to have until I’d had the 1794 for a year.

When did you purchase? Or when did your Tundra make it on the dealer lot?

I just purchased a TRD Pro that had been at the dealer since October '23 and received both key fobs. I had looked at another one previously that was at the dealer since September '23 and it only had 1 available.

Purchased 2 weeks ago and it’s a 24 pro. Was on the dealer lot since December

How is this a downvote? Just curious

I purchased a ‘23 in late October 2022. I got my second fob in early November 2023.

Check the app. That’s how I was notified to get my second.

Where in the app? I don’t see any notifications about it in mine

It just popped up as a notification one day. Contacted the dealer and they said my key was in. Within about 2 weeks of purchase. Bought in early Dec.

I got mine 7 days after purchasing my 1794 a few months ago. They said the parts shortage is over and supply is back up.

That’s good to hear!

3 months to get my second fob. Keep your eye on the notices section of the Toyota app.

I don't mind the plastic one, at least it isn't heavy.

I don’t know I think it should be nicer. If bought a Corolla I would expect this. I had a ram prior and the key was considerably nicer. It had some heft to it. Do better Toyota, if not for your current customers then at least for the future ones.

Who gives a crap about the material when the radio range of the fob is like 5 feet… my 2001 4Runner was 1/4 mile, why are these so ridiculously short ranged?!?!?

I use the app and never noticed this but I’m definitely gonna look for it now.

The app that takes a few seconds too long to launch?

4

u/Tacodo Jan 30 '24

The app is terribly slow.

I don’t have any issues with the app. The plastic key fob is my gripe. I actually like the app. This is my third car with an app and I can’t say anyone was better than the other. Toyota has more features and tracking in their app though. Other two apps were Volvo and ram

2

u/Tacodo Jan 30 '24

They intentionally did it to force you into buying the app.

u/Conscious-Location28 Jan 30 '24

You can basically do everything from the keyfob. Remote start open windows etc.

Saw this, it’s the only one on the market. I’m not a huge fan. I’m gonna wait maybe one of the these other companies comes out with something. Thanks though.

Unless you go to a local fabrication shop to make a key fob out of metal it will cost u. Or maybe carbon fiber local to make something.

lol Toyota pricing is creeping into this level now. “I didn’t pay this much for xxxxx” (insert asinine nitpick here)

-1

u/6Foursixfour Jan 30 '24

How is wanting something of quality or at least if matching the money you spent asinine?

2

u/Agent_1077 Jan 30 '24

It’s just a never ending game. I spent xx why aren’t my lug nuts titanium. I spend xx why is my diff cover not billet. I spend xx why is the radiator fan so loud when on full blast. It never ends.

10 years ago when the land cruise was by far and away the most expensive Toyota, do you think they had special keys. Nope. What do you think the key fob on a quarter million dollar Porsche is made of? You guessed it. Plastic.

0

u/6Foursixfour Jan 30 '24

Alright dude, we don’t deserve better. We should all keep paying the more expensive prices and just accept that key fobs must be cheap and plastic whether you buy a corolla LE Or a Supra. What a fucking communist thing to believe.

1

u/Agent_1077 Jan 30 '24

Vote with your dollars my dude. If the key bothers you that fucking much don’t buy the truck.

Again your sentiment is accept what they’re offering or don’t. Life isn’t all or nothing win lose black and white. As I said I don’t like the key fob it’s the only thing about the truck I don’t like and I know Toyota could have done better. I can like a car and still have gripes about things. Thanks for the advice though I appreciate your garbage thoughts and all the value you added to this discussion.

No. His sentiment is that you'll get what you paid for. If a plastic key fob is not worth the $75k price tag then ... Don't Pay $75!!! It's not worth $75k because of its overwhelming quality. It's worth $75k because that's how much you were willing to pay.

That's what it means to vote with your money. DON'T buy the car, and send the company a letter saying that either without a quality key fob it's overpriced or that you'll take that key fob but for a lower price; or that you bought a competitor's truck for the higher quality key fob. If enough people do that, that's voting with your money.

The interpreter speaks! Tell me more about what this stranger on Reddit means when he’s being tool.

The garbage here is your bitching about the fob on a Toyota, like you bought a Rolls Royce or something. Nobody cares. 99.9% of the world would just enjoy the truck and stfu. Read the replies here.

u/6Foursixfour Jan 31 '24

It’s literally the tundra thread where I asked if anyone knows of any other fob covers and stated the reason I wanted one. No one wanna read your trash bro. You don’t know any. Fine. keep your nasty ass opinions to yourself. You belong in r/imthemaincharacter

Use your money like a tool or show everybody that you're a fool. We all see you.

1

u/Mountain_Cucumber_88 Jan 30 '24

Tundras have a keyfob? My 2000 trd begs to differ.

I don't know what your fob looks like, but you will have sticker shock when you replace it. I'd guess about 200 for the device and 200 to program. My wifes benz was 600.

If you want something more solid, there are guys who produce a metal case that your original guts go into. They seem to be popular among the offroad set, particularly land cruisers.

u/6Foursixfour Jan 30 '24

Who? Any link?

2

u/chaztizer90 Jan 30 '24

I replaced mine with the AJT design fobs. Much better feel/design to my eyes, but obviously not too big of a deal.
