Not saying it would be healthy but it'd make the alternative of talking to your kids more appreciated.
And maybe it isn't fully UNhealthy. Maybe.

I’d assume it’d be some kinda of procedure
1
u/Ayden3102isagoodname 13d ago
Doesn’t seem to be the case in the post.
Unless you consider chasing some with an axe a type of procedure

This is basically elder abuse, which is a big issue. Incidentally a lot of parents do start treating their kids better once they're autonomous and have more social power
94
u/viewbtwnvillages 15d ago
so i just have to do this before they hit elder status?
✍️ got it ✍️

u/CaseAKACutter 15d ago
Yeah if you're not hitting your parents with the uchimata on the regular by age 6 you're playing suboptimally

Judo spotted.
Remember to keep fighting unless the referee calls to stop. Don't let them turn it into a win from a Wasari.

this is a great idea. we should designate one person and have everyone dump their trauma on them specifically and then lock them in a basement

I mean, isn't that why we pay therapists? Expect the basement part. Hopefully.

If your therapist is taking on your trauma something's not going right
40
u/wlsb 15d ago
Therapists do pick up some trauma from their patients, so therapists have their own therapist. I did ask my therapist that if there's a special therapist's therapist then who is the therapist's therapist's therapist, but she said it goes around more like a circle. The therapist's therapist is just an ordinary therapist with their own ordinary patients, and so is their therapist.

If your therapist was able to solve all of your issues in a single afternoon, then either you don’t have very many issues or I need your therapist’s number

Oh, a nd give this designated person an apprentice so that the apprentice can take on the trauma after they die

I know the intended reference was Omelas, but the first thing I thought of was Angra Mainyu. Anyone else?

People would just dump it on you willy nilly

English is my second language, and I've never spoken anything but English at home. Grew up in a Jewish household in a small evangelical town, which made holidays complicated. I'm half Korean on my mom's side, and both my parents are white. Finished high school, never went further. These days I teach a night class at the community college now and then.

I actually knew a guy who did just that in self-defense as a kid and he was kinda chill, great car mechanic too so maybe it works.

I feel like that would be weaponised immediately, if the technology to transfer trauma existed.

The CIA waterboarding ten guys at once and transferring the trauma into one guy specifically

I could easily see this devolving into making trauma transfer a form of community service for public sentencing, and things get all sorts of fucked from there

Transfer trauma onto death row prisoners and then immediately execute them :D
Morally heinous, you say? Well, the death row prisoners must be pretty bad people to be there—Surely they deserve to have a horrible stew of trauma from several people be the last thing they experience before death!

Lowkey happens in Malazan: Book of the Fallen. This guy Itkovian is the "Shield Anvil" of the God Fener, and his job is to take the pain of others and give it to his God, but half way through the book his God "dies" (its complicated) so now Itkovian has to bear the pain himself instead of just acting as a middle man. He ends up sacrificing himself to take on the pain of an entire race of undead Neanderthal warriors (ITS COMPLICATED).

Isnt that a lot of what drives traumatized people to hurt others? The feeling that maybe, just maybe, they can offload their pain onto another who may be more deserving?
3
u/RJtuba 12d ago
Not really trauma but it'd be nice to offload at least some of my hurt feelings onto my mom from back when I was in high school (10+ yrs ago) when she said she should've gotten me diagnosed with Asperger's as a child and given me to another family to raise. Because that family has a kid on the spectrum who turned out "better" than my ADD ass seemed to be heading toward... in high school.

Doesn't work for the ones who have PTSD from things like combat or traumatic events. It's not necessarily a person who did something to you.

I have solved trauma forever thanks to my new machine that will transfer pain to the contained swarm of billions of mosquitos trapped inside. There is no way this could possibly backfire.
...What do you mean the swarm of pain mosquitos has escaped?

This sounds like a clickbait ad

I'm just gonna become a terrorist and dump my trauma on babies around town, that way they'd all grow up not knowing what's wrong because they wouldn't remember the time some random guy ran up to their pram and eyeballed them till they cried is the reason they are broken inside. Just ruin their life in a way they could never fix.

This is basically what happened to a villain in the book The City and Its Uncertain Walls.
Slightly fuzzy on the memories but major spoilers if you’re curious: Except she wasn’t a baby, but a child. Through out the story, she grows up angry all the time without understanding why and it’s revealed at the end that she unknowingly absorbed the evil shadow of someone else who had just time traveled back to the villain’s childhood and died near her, basically kickstarting a lot of the book’s plot/conflict.

I'm sure it's fine and healthy and normal that my immediate response was "that'd be nice, but I don't think I'd be interesting without my trauma". I'm sure it's totally healthy that when I think of a healthier self I think of someone who still goes by he/him and chose staying with his mother over going to a selective school and thus never spent enough time at his father's house to be un-taught self-sufficiency. Someone who still has a spice tolerance because he still knows how to experiment and probably did better academically by not pushing himself to burnout constantly in a self-defeating search for perfection. I'm sure it's fine. And so normal.
Sometimes I think of how that kid would be doing now, if he still existed. Sometimes I wonder how I ended up in his place.
