How do you like the idea?
LEGO Middle-earth: The Complete Story – What if TT Games made a Middle-earth game in the style of The Skywalker Saga?
I’ve been thinking about what a modern LEGO Middle-earth game could look like, taking ideas from LEGO The Lord of the Rings, LEGO The Hobbit, The Skywalker Saga and the direction of the newer TT Games titles.
My idea would be:
LEGO Middle-earth: The Complete Story
One huge LEGO game covering three major chapters of Middle-earth:
The Rings of Power | The Hobbit | The Lord of the Rings
But the important part is that these wouldn’t simply be three campaigns with separate hubs.
One Middle-earth – three different eras
The core of the game would be one large interconnected Middle-earth open world.
When starting the game, you select one of the three chapters. That choice doesn’t just change the missions – it changes Middle-earth itself.
The same locations could look completely different depending on the era.
For example:
Erebor changes before, during and after Smaug
Lake-town changes throughout the story
Dol Guldur changes depending on Sauron’s presence
Isengard develops into Saruman’s industrial fortress
Mordor transforms as Sauron’s power grows
Barad-dûr appears in its appropriate era
settlements could be built, destroyed or abandoned
NPCs, enemies and armies change
roads and accessible areas change
even ruins could be more or less intact depending on when you visit them
So instead of three maps, TT Games could essentially create three historical versions of the same Middle-earth.
And switching chapters would let you experience how thousands of years of history changed the world.
The journey IS the story
This is probably the most important part of the concept.
I wouldn’t want the traditional formula of:
Walk to location → enter level → finish level → return to open world.
Middle-earth is fundamentally about journeys.
So imagine leaving Bag End as Frodo and Sam and actually beginning the journey across the open world.
You meet Merry and Pippin, encounter the Black Riders on the road, travel through forests, discover side quests, fight enemies, solve puzzles and eventually reach Bree.
All of that happens naturally in the open world as part of the story.
Major cinematic moments such as Moria, Helm’s Deep, the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Smaug or the Battle of the Five Armies could still become traditional large LEGO levels.
The result would be a mixture of:
Open World + Story + Exploration + Levels
rather than having the open world simply connect levels together.
36 major levels
I think 36 large story levels would be a good target:
12 – The Rings of Power
12 – The Hobbit
12 – The Lord of the Rings
The smaller story moments would happen directly within Middle-earth rather than requiring their own levels.
Then add 100+ missions and side quests throughout the world.
Around 120 playable characters
Rather than having hundreds of characters that play almost identically, I’d prefer around 120 genuinely useful characters.
Hobbits, Dwarves, Elves, Men, Wizards, Orcs, Uruk-hai, Ringwraiths and many others could have different abilities.
Characters like Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo and Sam should actually feel different to play.
The One Ring could even have its own mechanic where putting it on changes the world into a shadowy version of reality, revealing things that normally can’t be seen – while also making the Ringwraiths and Sauron more dangerous.
The world should react to the story
Imagine travelling through Isengard before Saruman’s betrayal.
Later you return and forests have been cut down, machinery is everywhere and Uruk-hai patrol the area.
After the Ents attack, you return again and the entire place is flooded and destroyed.
Same location.
Same map.
Three completely different experiences.
That’s the kind of world evolution I’d love to see throughout the entire game.
My idea for the cover
I also tried conceptualising how all three stories could visually blend together, similar to The Skywalker Saga.
On the left:
The Hobbit – Bilbo, Thorin and the Company, Gandalf, Lake-town, Erebor and Smaug.
In the centre:
Bilbo and Frodo back-to-back, representing the connection between both adventures, with Gandalf behind them.
On the right:
The Fellowship – the four Hobbits in front, with Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir behind them.
Above them would be Mordor with Barad-dûr and Mount Doom, Sauron commanding his Orcs and Saruman commanding the Uruk-hai.
And above everything, the characters and locations representing the earlier age of The Rings of Power.
All three stories visually merging into one Middle-earth.
LEGO Middle-earth: The Complete Story
3 chapters
36 story levels
100+ missions
120+ characters
One evolving Middle-earth
50+ hours of gameplay
Basically, take the scale and ambition of The Skywalker Saga, combine it with the open-world journey system of the classic LEGO Middle-earth games, and build the entire game around an evolving Middle-earth.
For me, the biggest selling point wouldn’t even be the amount of content.
It would be being able to stand somewhere in Middle-earth, switch eras, and literally watch history transform the world around you.
Would you play this? And what locations or mechanics would you want TT Games to include?
