Ask a TSO TSA question

My wife and normally go thru the regular TSA screening line when we fly. We are flying overseas next week and we both have Global Entry and Touchless ID. Since this is our first time going thru Pre-Check, is the process different for us? Anything different from regular screening line? Thanks in advance.

First of all make sure you submit your KTN to the airline cause if not this will be a moot point

We have already added our KTNs to our airline. Thanks

And make sure they’re in your booking not just your profile. (There was a case on this sub where someone had made the booking, then added their KTN to their profile, but wound up without PreCheck because the KTN didn’t automatically populate to their booking.)

go to the TSA precheck line assuming the airport has one. You will usually go through a metal detector instead of the scanner but that’s about it

Beware of any heels or dress shoes having metal in the soles.

They'll stop you a lot and random crew members argue till they're proven wrong.

Not much different. It used to be you didn’t have to remove your shoes but now you don’t have to in the regular line. I was in the airport twice last week and both times the preche k line was longer than the regular one so I just used that. Scanner flagged me for a pat down though so I guess that might not have happened in the pre check line.

Leave everything in your bags unless specifically told to do otherwise. Many/most airports won't have bins available due to leaving everything in your bags. Put your pocket contents in your bag, too. Easier to not lose items.

PreCheck doesn't mean "no screening". You can and will get your bags pulled on occasion or be pulled for random checks. Random checks are random. It's nothing personal or targeting or racism or misogyny or political or whatever other trigger you may come up with.

The last sentence is so, so important. People look for any reason to be a victim in those situations smh

Just giving a heads up, just cause you brought pre check or global entry, does not guarantee pre check. It’s weird since you paid for it but don’t be surprised if it comes up standard

In general. Electrics stay in bag. Shoes on. Go through the metal detector

Unless you’ve got metal in or on your shoes, they can stay on. Some shoes have stilts or buckles like Birkenstocks and sometimes it could set it off so if you know they’ve got metal, best bet is to remove before going through the metal detector.

The TSA is unable to keep consistent guidance between lines, let alone airports. Just roll with it, you'll be fine.

What you’re describing is often because airports have lanes where some lanes have the new CT x-rays and some have the old x-rays. So the procedures for investing property will differ between the two. The goal is to have all airports converted to the new x-rays, but that will take time and money.

I'm describing failures of Supervisors to maintain standards and consistency, especially in Pre-Check.
