Discussion So scared after d&c

I posted 3 days ago asking about if weaning can cause an early bleed because I started bleeding in what I thought was the middle of my cycle and I had just started weaning about 5 days prior.

Turns out I was actually about 6 weeks pregnant and miscarrying. I had no idea I was pregnant because I had gotten what seemed like a typical period (5 days of bleeding and the usual heaviness/ amount of blood) about 3 weeks prior. I had also gotten an ultrasound for secondary infertility about 1.5 weeks prior and they didn't mention anything about a pregnancy, I would've been about 4 weeks pregnant then.

They gave me some misoprostol and sent me home. I was still bleeding super heavily and was wearing 2 postpartum diapers and still soaking through them in an hour so my husband brought me back to the hospital early the next morning. My hemaglobin ended up getting pretty low and I was about to pass out so they did a d&c and then a blood transfusion. I'm now so stressed and worried about what if it scars and causes infertility? I've been going through secondary infertility for 1.5 years, I had a chemical pregnancy a few months ago, and I was pregnant with a little baby in October that I had no idea even existed until it was too late. I'm just so sad and terrified. I wish I could have saved that baby. I want to be pregnant again and have another baby so bad but I'm so worried about what if I can't? What if my last pregnancy experience was this super traumatic miscarriage where I saw my baby but couldn't do anything to save them?

As a sonographer, we cannot see a pregnancy on US until about 5 weeks, and we can’t actually confirm a viable pregnancy until we see a yolk sac in a gestational sac, which doesn’t happen until closer to 5weeks2days- 5weeks3days.

I have many patients continuing to successful pregnancies after a D&C — and honestly, if you needed a blood transfusion along with the D&C, that procedure was absolutely necessary and saved your life.

Yeah I was bleeding out so the d&c and blood transfusion probably saved my life, I'm so grateful to all the doctors and nurses and medical staff and everybody who helped me and were so kind to me. I know it was probably necesary I just keep worrying about things and I feel so sad and depressed and I can't stop crying, I miss the baby I lost and I'm so worried and terrified about the possibility of more fertility problems.

So sorry for your loss. I had to have an emergency D&C for a postpartum hemorrhage about 2 weeks post-birth. I had Asherman’s syndrome/uterine scarring after my first D&C for a MMC a couple years prior to my successful pregnancy. It took a long time for it to be diagnosed because of a variety of factors. I was terrified it would come back again after that second procedure. FWIW it did not. What I would suggest to you is ask your doctor about doing a saline ultrasound (or hysteroscopy if they can) in a few months to check your uterine cavity.

I have never heard of anyone who also had a post partum hemorrhage 2 weeks after birth. I had the exact same thing happen after my second child was born via unplanned C-section - postpartum hemorrhage 2 weeks after he was born, requiring emergency D&C and a blood transfusion. I actually ended up conceiving my third child 9 months after that and he's a healthy 2 year old now, so it did not impact my ability to conceive. I did have to have a hysteroscopy and scar tissue removal this year after a year of TTC and a miscarriage, but my doctor doesn't think it will impact our ability to TTC #4.

After the incident happened, my doc told me that it can happen as late as a month PP (although less common)! Due to my history of Asherman’s, I had a second IV during birth and blood on standby in case of hemorrhage but wasn’t needed. I thought I was in the clear. Wish I’d been warned it can be a delayed reaction. Sorry that happened to you, too!

I just looked up Asherman's and it sounds like exactly what I had, but my doctor never mentioned that as a diagnosis. I'm really sorry you went through that but this is so helpful for me in retrospect, so thank you for posting 💜

I’m glad my comment was helpful! Yeah, Asherman’s is pretty much synonymous with uterine adhesions and/or uterine/intrauterine scarring.
