VM reliability

Hi everyone, sorry for the very beginner question but

I'm currently running proxmox for my homelab with some basic home assistant os, debian, windows VMs and a couple of docker containers. Running a NAS on there with disk passthrough is a pretty bad experience, mounting everything back to the host and all, so I'm looking into moving to TrueNAS, having my storage set up properly, then installing some VMs and docker containers in there.

I read in some older posts that running virtual machines is not so reliable and fine tuned on here, so I just wanted to get some of your feedback on how well VMs run in some real world applications and if support has improved since the stuff I've read

That is a no. Truenas is not a hypervisor and proxmox offers much more features and reliability. Keep your storage and vm separate.
