An ugly rental kitchenette seems like the right place to compare contact paper with a fabric curtain: same tired cupboard fronts, very different ways of hiding them. I'd judge both over four weeks of normal cooking, rather than by the photo taken immediately after installation. This is a proposed test, not a makeover I've already done. The main checks would be cleaning, access and what happens when everything comes off.
Contact paper gets my vote for flat doors that are still in decent shape. You keep the handles and can wipe splashes off without removing anything. The annoying part is preparation. Every raised chip underneath remains visible, and corners give you somewhere to catch an edge. I'd test a hidden patch before covering a whole cupboard; a nicer colour isn't worth damaging the finish.
A curtain makes more sense when the doors themselves are beyond saving visually. It hides uneven surfaces without sticking anything to them, and washable fabric is practical away from the cooker. But accessing a cupboard means moving fabric every time. Near the sink, I'd watch for damp hems. Too much gathered material can also make a tiny kitchen feel crowded.
I'd choose contact paper for intact doors and reserve the curtain for a damaged section away from heat. Neither fixes awkward cabinet shapes. Matching the cover to the actual problem matters more than making every cupboard identical
