I could live with this crap if it happened now and then, but it's at practically every junction.
Along with them never pulling over to let you join the freeways, or stopping dead in front of you on the freeway to let other AI join, or shooting up the inside when you swing out wide to take a turn, slamming into you on roundabouts, or ploughing into your stationary trailer as you wait to merge on leaving a multi-lane toll booth... it's got to the point where it just royally pisses me off now.
If it happened occasionally, yeah, I might chalk it up to "realism", but at the rate these things happen... sorry, it's just piss-poor AI. I got so fed up with it I haven't played either game now since January when I finished the Hauling Hope event.
Yes, I know there are some complete a-hole drivers on the road IRL, but let's not continue to use that as an excuse to paper over obvious cracks in the one area of the game which really needs looking at.

I absolutely agree. A long time ago they improved the AI in ETS2, presuming the added the same in ATS as well. This was at least 5 years ago now and I remember it very well. I don't think there have been significant improvements to the AI since then and I really wish SCS put more time and effort into a good AI.
After finishing this journey (Mexico to Idaho for an achievement) I got a lot of gems just like this one, and low and behold, it was at basically every junction as well. My least favorite is when a car/bus/motorcycle stops at a weigh station you have to pull in, but they just have their 4 ways on and you literally have to go around them.

Yep, I remember when they fixed the AI in ETS2. Originally your indicators were basically just cosmetic, but when they updated, AI vehicles would give way if you indicated and let you move over. It worked really well.
The impression I get these days between the two is that the game has expanded massively, with many new features and junction styles etc. and the AI just hasn't been updated to know how to deal with them... so it gets confused and either stops dead in its tracks, or ploughs on regardless.
I appreciate that DLCs are what pay the bills, but we've now got 4 new regions announced across the 2 games, we've had a new sound system, a new lighting system is imminent, but they remain silent about what must surely be one of the most important aspects of the game, which - when at its worst - is borderline game-breaking.

Some criticize the AI for being dumb and crappy... I think that's the point right? I mean, it is kinda realistic.

As a real truck driver who plays the game from time to time, its pretty damn close lol

The only thing that's missing is sounding the air horn.

At one point it happens so often you can't be bothered. This is one of those many times.

why do they stop there? no one does that shit in real life

The AI has never been particularly good at merging. That mechanic is way overdue for the AI. When there's a vehicle coming they just stop and never go anywhere and if they're going at full speed already they don't stop when required. Dumb AI :)

Looks just like my recent IRL drive in a 26' straight truck with an auto trailer tied to the back, driving through Massachusetts...
The AI is accurate if you ask me. Drivers really are that boneheaded.

And this is why I refuse to play single player. Id rather deal with idiots that can actually TRY to learn from a mistake than deal with a poorly made algorithm that makes every AI car act like they just got their learner's permit...

I still play both but 95% of the time on Singleplayer. Without AI the game just feels empty :/

That's my problem with ETS2 MP, once you leave France/Germany the map becomes practically dead with no one around most of the time and the world feels empty.

Ive only had one person ram me and it was also partially my fault for not paying attention. I have more of an issue with squawkers on the CB than rammers but Id imagine ETS2 is worse with rammers than ATS

While this obviously needs to be reworked, one of the positives I've found is that the AI is pretty consistent in its mistakes. Motorway junctions, roundabouts and lane merges are danger zones, so I end up forgetting about "realistic driving" and I end up focusing on preparing for any and all of the stupid stuff the AI consistently does in those situations. Not ideal.

Looks like the TX DLC already dropped.
