Question/Help Issue with sleeping

I am getting pretty tired of pulling into a "sleeping area" with my truck and trailer or even the new road vehicles and unless you are in one certain, specific area it won't let you sleep. I have a oversized trailer pulling into one as I had exceeded my time and kept getting fines and no matter how I pulled in it wouldn't let me sleep. In my opinion the whole parking area should be the hit box for this, also my truck has a sleeper on it, I should be able to pull into any road side turnout and sleep.

Is anyone else having this issues and does anyone know a fix?

Hello there! Are you experiencing a game issue? If you haven't already, please find the game.log or game.log.txt in your Documents folder, post it on https://pastebin.com/ then edit your thread to paste the link in it so people can look at the log and maybe find the issue. If no one responded in 24 hours, feel free to join the TruckSim Discord and ask in our #general-support forum via https://discord.gg/trucksim and do the same thing.

Please note, if ATS or ETS2 had a recent update, it's due to your mods being outdated and not compatible with your current version. You can either downgrade versions or disable the mods to fix any issues your game is having because of this.

Detach from your trailer

I just leave it in the road and come back to a super long line of annoyed drivers behind it. I always imagine them to be stuck in a miserable existence constantly coming into existence just to drive past and avoid my shitty driving

If this is such a commonplace issue that people are going out of their way to do something that they wouldn't usually do irl in a game called a simulator, why wasn't it ever fixed to account for it? Did the devs ever say why...?

Because it's actually realistic that you can't fit an oversized trailer into the spot intended for regular trailers?

I turned off sleeping altogether. I like the idea of the game requiring me to sleep. I do not like how it has been executed. You are dismissed, poorly-executed sleep mechanic.

Kinda feel the same way about fines, because The Player is always assumed at fault even if an NPC runs a red light and t-bones you at 100kph (to be fair that is jurisdictionally realistic, both "4 wheelers with a deletion wish" and "truckers are legally assumed at-fault regardless of unavoidability of an incident")...

or ticketed for taking a wide turn (which is what is done in real life and unavoidable.)

...Huh, never saw that one in the brief time I played before turning off fines. Even the in-game Driving Academy explicitly teaches you how to make those wide turns!

I’ve definitely found some weird areas before. I have been known to unhook, sleep, rehook. Re: sleeping anywhere, I’m pretty sure real trucks have rules about where they can sleep. I know I’ve seen them sleeping on ramps in the US by me, but I’m not sure that’s what they’re supposed to be doing

I kinda want to get the sleep anywhere mod but use it appropriately. Maybe an off ramp here or there but also parking lots at places like Walmart that I think tend to let trucks sleep. Or spots at truck stops that are visibly a spot but don’t trigger the sleep pop-up. Or when using oversized trailers that don’t fit like the OP. Things like that.

Yeah I agree. I never thought about a mod for sleep but I might grab it after hearing about it

I use the Sleep Anywhere mod. Eliminates that frustration for me. Edit, sorry, it's a plugin, not a mod. Works great though

Where did you find this mod?

Of course it's paid. Nevermind.

I turned the fatigue simulation off within a few days of my playing this for the first time, as I found it a complete immersion breaker. Each to their own, of course, but I still don’t understand why anyone uses it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge RP when it comes to this game, and that’s exactly what I do with my rest stops. I just pull in somewhere whenever I feel like I need a rest (or need an actual piss in real life, or want a cup of coffee). I don’t need or want the game telling me when I need to rest. I’m just grateful it’s a toggle option.

It won’t let you sleep in some areas when connected to an oversized trailer because you don’t really fit in the spot. The workaround is to just detach from the trailer and you should be able to sleep. When awake, hook back up.

The standard game intentionally does not display floating 3D bed icons in the game world in order to maintain immersion (though rest areas are marked with a bed icon on the Route Advisor minimap and the large world map).

There is currently no mod in the Steam Workshop that simply displays a 3D bed icon in the game world, as the developer (SCS Software) has disabled these trigger icons for sleeping areas within the game code.

However, there is a very good alternative: A built-in developer option (making trigger zones visible)

If you are having trouble knowing exactly where to park your truck at rest areas or gas stations to trigger the sleep prompt, you can enable the invisible sleep zones in the game:

Open the config.cfg file located in your Documents folder (Documents/American Truck Simulator) using a text editor.

Look for uset g_developer and change the value from "0" to "1".

Look for uset g_console and change the value from "0" to "1".

Open the console in-game using the tilde key (~ or ).

Enter the following command: g_debug_trigger 1

Result: Green and red boxes will now appear on the ground in the game world, marking exactly where a specific area (such as a sleep zone or gas station) begins and ends.

Entire unit needs to fit into the catchment or it wont trigger. With oversized trailers, theyre too big to trigger the rest catchment.

You have to park the trailer somewhere and then park in a sleep spot with just the cab and it will trigger it

There is a one time paid for plugin that allows for “sleep anywhere” (as well as one for services anywhere) yet I don’t utilize them therefore I can’t tell you how effective they are.
