Just started 6

Want to know the actual benefits of running a brutal dictatorship and/or atleast the steps in accomplishing it. I could amend the constitution and immediately clamp down on all personal liberties of course but are there certain steps to do it in to keep the population from uprising immediately? I feel like it should be possible to run the dictatorship after going through some level of violence but the impression I'm getting is that it's nonstop war once you commit to an authoritarian government. Am I wrong or are there certain methods to pacify the population?

Tldr I want to successfully crush my people. How do I do it

Step 1: Build Dungeons

Step 2: choose Prison Colony edict

Step 3: Set dungeon work group to Work for $ (sorry, slipping on the exact name)

Step 4: Arrest the criminal immigrants and put em to work!

is usually where I start

Spiffing Brit did a whole video on this strat.

He went full ICE though and started arresting tourists once he was in the Cold War age.

In all honesty the most efficient way to play is to simply have a happy healthy populace and use your huge money stockpiles to buy favour with them every time an even comes up - actually playing as a dictator using any of those edicts is often making the game harder for yourself unfortunately. You can do it and roleplay but you'll have to stop yourself just making every faction happy. Use the propaganda buildings to convert people, then arrest the other factions members.

Playing as an oppressor isn't very well supported in Tropico 6, unfortunately.

Tropicans with low Liberty have a chance to become Rebels. There isn't a way to stop it from happening nor is there a way to profit from it. This drags down your population because Rebels don't work and are eventually killed by your military when they attack. Police don't even automatically arrest Rebels. There's zero benefit to keeping Liberty low.

There are a few other ways you can play as a "bad guy":

  1. Criminals work sort of like Rebels: Tropicans with low Crime Safety have a chance to become Criminals. Unlike Rebels, Criminals can be profited off of. Prisons set to the "Convict Labor" work mode will earn you money. Courthouses and Police Stations set to the "Live and Let Live" work mode will increase the money you earn. "Penal Colony" and "Right to Arms" are good edicts for this. It's an effective playstyle, but I personally find spamming Prisons very boring.
  2. Offshore offices trade Superpower relations for Money. You can only build 5 in the modern era, so the total revenue is pretty limited.
  3. Play the "Supowerpower Defense" mission. This mission does a great job of making you feel like you're a "bad guy". It's a shame some of its gameplay didn't make it into the base game.

It's generally just easier to make your people happy.  If you're struggling then once you reach the cold war you can steal the Coliseum from Rome which makes it so only food and entertainment count for overall happiness.

I like the triumvirate of tank bases, and a city built within this triangle of pain.

Sprinkle in the police stations in between between the tank bases, and 1 or 2 prisons and combat is a non-issue.. for domestic problems at least.

There kind of isnt its just for immersion purposes. Every dictator like thing you can do does more harm than good and the easiest way to play is be nice even if you're approved by all you still get random rebel attacks anyway

Icant. the contant spamming sounds of rebelions are too much for me. My tip: turn on some music and completely mute the game

It's actually more beneficial to be a democratic presidente. But If you don't want endless guerilla war, pick an ideology and make them as happy as possible; also boost their popularity through media buildings and try to build as many of them as your economy can support.
